Description

イオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステム
 本発明は、イオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステムに関し、さらに詳しくは、放電開始時に推進剤を確実にプラズマ化することを可能とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステムに関する。
 イオンエンジンは、推進剤、例えば、キセノンガスを直流放電やマイクロ波放電によってプラズマ化し、プラズマ化した陽イオン(キセノンイオン)に電圧をかけて放出することにより推力を得る電気推進システムであり、人工衛星等の軌道制御や姿勢制御に利用されている。従来のイオンエンジンの概略構成を図3に示す。進剤貯蔵タンク11にはキセノンガス等の推進剤が高圧で貯蔵されており、推進剤は配管17を介して一旦低圧タンク13に送られ、さらに低圧タンク13からスラスタバルブ19を介してイオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aへ送られるようになっている。高圧タンク11と低圧タンク13との間の配管17には圧力調整用の調圧バルブ15が配置され、また、スラスタバルブ19の上流側には推進剤の流量を制御する流量制限器18が配置されている。そして、配管17はイオン源3及び中和器5にそれぞれ連通されている。
 一方、イオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aには同軸ケーブル40によってそれぞれマイクロ波電源30と接続されており、マイクロ波電源30で発生させたマイクロ波が同軸ケーブル40を介してプラズマ生成室3a,5aへそれぞれ供給されて推進剤がプラズマ化される。また、イオン源3のプラズマ生成室3aで生成された電子は図示しない配線により中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aへ運ばれるようになっている。
 イオン源3には、プラズマ生成室3aで生成されたイオンを加速するイオン加速部4が設けられており、このイオン加速部4はスクリーングリッド4aと、アクセルグリッド4bを備えている。プラズマ生成室3a側に面してスクリーングリッド4aが配置されており、スクリーングリッド4aは直径0.5~5.0mm程の開口(ホール)が多数穿設されたメッシュ状の部材である。また、スクリーングリッド4aと隣接して配置された外側のアクセルグリッド4bは、スクリーングリッド4aのホール径の半分程の孔径(直径1mm程の開口(ホール))が多数穿設されたメッシュ状の部材である。そして、このスクリーングリッド4aとアクセルグリッド4bのホール中心が合致するように相互に位置決めされて配置されている。スクリーングリッド4aのホールサイズはアクセルグリッド4bのホールサイズよりも大きく形成されているが、これは開口面積比率を高めて多数のイオンを抽出し外部に加速・放出するためである。尚、アクセルグリッド4bの後方にもう1枚のグリッド(ディセルグリッド)を設ける場合もある。
 そして、スクリーングリッド4aには電源ユニット7からプラスの電圧を印加し、アクセルグリッド4bには電源ユニット7からマイナスの電圧を印加することにより、プラズマ化されたプラスのイオンがアクセルグリッド4bの静電力によって引き寄せられて加速され、イオンビームとして放出される。
 一方、プラスのイオンだけを放出していると人工衛星側がマイナスに帯電し、せっかく放出したプラスのイオンが人工衛星側に戻ってきてしまって推力にならなくなってしまうことから放出されるイオンビームと同量の電子によってイオンビームを中和し、イオンエンジンの帯電を防止するために中和器5が設けられている。そのため、中和器5にも推進剤を供給して電源ユニット7によってマイナスの電圧が印加されるようになっている。中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aで生成されたプラスのイオンの一部は電子と一緒に放出されるが、残ったプラスのイオンはイオン源3のプラズマ生成室3aから運ばれた電子と結合して再び中性のキセノンに戻り、さらにマイクロ波電源30から供給されるマイクロ波によって再びプラズマ化されてリサイクルされる。
 イオンエンジンの推進剤の流量調整に関しては、例えば、特許文献1に示すものがある。特許文献1は、推進剤の流量信号と実際の流量との間にずれが生じた場合の推進剤流量制御のための校正係数を軌道上で補正し、推進剤の流量を適切に制御する技術に関するものである。

 従来の大型サイズのマイクロ波放電式イオンエンジンにおいては、放電室サイズが大きく、十分な体積面積比が確保され、かつ十分大きなマイクロ波電力の供給が可能であったため、プラズマ着火に大きな技術的課題はなかった。しかしながら、小型のイオンエンジンにおいては、プラズマ生成室3a,5aの小型化による体積面積比の縮小(損失面積の相対的増加)、および使用可能マイクロ波電力の低下に伴い、プラズマ着火の不着火が大きな問題となっていた。すなわち、プラズマ生成室3a,5aサイズ、マイクロ波電力、そしてガス流量が縮小化されることによりプラズマ着火が困難となるのである。
 プラズマ着火確率を増加させるための基本的な方法としては、例えば、(1)体積面積比の増加、(2)マイクロ波電力の増加、(3)ガス流量の増加、が考えられる。この点、小型イオンエンジンにおいては本質的にサイズ拡大を伴う変更は実施不可能である。また、イオンエンジンの運用において、初期運用の開始時には推進剤(キセノンガス)を確実に着火(プラズマ化)させ、一方、定常的な加速フェーズでは、最適な動作点で推力を継続的に維持する必要がある。しかしながら、流量制限器は、定常的な加速における最適な動作を実現する為に流量が最適値となるように推進剤の流量を制御するような設計となっている。さらに、マイクロ波電力や直流放電電力及びガス流量の増加はそれぞれ消費電力の増加および比推力の低下、すなわち性能の低下を招くので好ましくない。しかしながら、これらの増加を定常的なものではなく、一時的な増加に留めることができれば、性能の低下を抑えた上で、プラズマ着火の確率を大幅に上昇させ得るものと考えられる。
 そこで、本発明は、かかる問題点に鑑みなされたもので、定常運用における推進剤の流量の最適化を実現しつつ、且つ初期の確実なイオン着火を確保するための推進剤の流量制御を可能とし、小型のイオンエンジンであってもシステムに大きな変更を与えることなく、推進剤を確実に着火してプラズマ化することが可能なイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステムを提供することを目的とする。
 上記課題を解決するために請求項1に記載の発明は、放電開始時に一時的に定常状態よりも高い流量の推進剤を供給することによってプラズマ着火を行うことを特徴とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法を提供する。
 上記課題を解決するために請求項2に記載の本発明は、請求項1に記載のイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法において、一旦ガス溜めに貯めておいた推進剤を定常状態よりも高い流量で予めマイクロ波を照射したプラズマ生成室に放射することによりプラズマ着火を行うことを特徴とする。
 上記課題を解決するために請求項3に記載の本発明は、推進剤貯蔵タンクに貯蔵された推進剤を一旦減圧して貯えるアキュムレータからイオン源及び中和器へ供給する前記推進剤の流量を制御する流量制限器と、前記イオン源及び中和器への推進剤の供給又は停止を制御するスラスタバルブとの間に推進剤を溜めるガス溜めを設けたことを特徴とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給システムを提供する。
 本発明に係るイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステムによれば、流量制限器とスラスタバルブの間にガス溜めを設け、初期着火時のみガス溜めに貯蔵された推進剤を一気に放出することにより確実な着火を確保すると共に、定常的な加速運用時には推進剤の流量制限器により最適な加速運用をすることができるという効果がある。これにより、小型のイオンエンジンであっても確実にプラズマ着火させることができるという効果がある。一時的なガス流量の増加は比推力を低下させるが、その時間は0.1~1.0秒程度であり、通常モードにおけるイオンエンジンの作動時間に比べて極めて短いことから比推力の低下に対する影響も殆どない。

 以下、本発明に係るイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法及びシステムの好ましい一実施形態について図面を参照しつつ説明する。図1は本発明に係るイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給システムの一実施形態を示すブロック図である。尚、従来のイオンエンジンと同様の構造部分については図3と同じ符号を付し説明を省略する。
 図1に示すように、イオンエンジン1を構成するプラズマ着火用ガス供給システム10は、キセノンガス等の推進剤を高圧、例えば、約7Mpaで貯蔵する推進剤貯蔵タンク11と、推進剤を低圧、例えば0.03Mpaで貯蔵する低圧タンク(アキュムレータ)13を備えており、推進剤貯蔵タンク11と低圧タンク13との間の配管17には圧力調整用の調圧バルブ15が配置されている。そして、推進剤は低圧タンク13からスラスタバルブ19を介してイオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aへ送られるようになっており、スラスタバルブ19の上流側には推進剤の流量を制御する流量制限器18が配置されている。
 イオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aは真空と直結しているため、低圧タンク13の圧力に応じた流量で推進剤が流入する。そして、流量制限器18によって圧力と流量の関係が決定され、スラスタバルブ19の開閉によって推進剤の供給のON/OFF制御が実行される。
 本発明では、流量制限器18の下流側であってスラスタバルブ19の上流側の間にガス溜め20が設けられている。ガス溜め20は、例えば、図2に示すように、所定量の推進剤が一時的に貯えられる貯留室21を備えており、かかる構成において、スラスタバルブ19を閉じた状態ではガス溜め20には低圧タンク13と同圧力の推進剤が溜まる。ガス溜め20に貯えられた推進剤は流量制限器18の下流にあるため、次にスラスタバルブ19を開放した瞬間には流量制限器18の影響を受けることなくイオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aへ向かって放出される。また、図2に示すガス溜め20においては流量制限器18と連通する側の配管17aの径サイズとスラスタバルブ19と連通する側の配管17bの径サイズを同じにしているが、配管17bの径サイズを配管17aの径サイズよりも大きくすることで高い流量の推進剤を短時間でイオン源3のプラズマ生成室3a及び中和器5のプラズマ生成室5aへ放出させるように構成することもできる。尚、電源ユニット7、調圧バルブ15、流量制限器18、スラスタバルブ19、マイクロ波電源30の制御は制御装置50によって行われるようになっている。制御装置50は、いわゆるコンピュータであり、図示しない中央処理装置、記憶装置、入出力インターフェース、通信装置等を備えて構成されているが、その具体的内容は公知であるため詳しい説明は省略する。
 このガス流は、スラスタバルブ19からイオン源3及び中和器5までのガスコンダクタンスによって定まり、流量制限器18を介するよりもはるかに高い流量の推進剤を放出することができる。この一時的に大きなガス流の継続時間および最大値は、ガス溜め20の大きさ及びスラスタバルブ19からイオン源3の及び中和器5までのガスコンダクタンスによって調整が可能であるが、プラズマ着火に必要な時間は0.1~1.0秒程度である。そして、ガス溜め20に一時的に貯えられた推進剤の放出が終わった後は、流量制限器18による設定流量が流れ、通常動作モードに移行する。このように、プラズマ着火に必要な時間は典型的なイオンエンジン作動時間(数時間から1年)に比べて極めて短い時間であることから比推力の低下に対する影響も殆どない。
 本発明によれば、極めて厳しい小型・軽量化が求められる超小型の人工衛星等において確実なミッション遂行のために必要な軌道制御等に直接関わる小型イオンエンジンにおいて、エンジン始動時に一時的に定常状態よりも高いガス流量を流すことによりプラズマ着火を確実に行わせることができる。
 以上のように、本発明の好ましい実施形態について詳述したが、本発明は係る特定の実施形態に限定されるものではなく、特許請求の範囲に記載された本発明の要旨の範囲内において、種々の変形・変更が可能であることはいうまでもない。例えば、推進剤のプラズマ化はマイクロ波放電によるものに限られず放電電極方式によるものであってもかまわない。

Claims (3)

  1.  放電開始時に一時的に定常状態よりも高い流量の推進剤を供給することによってプラズマ着火を行うことを特徴とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法。
  2.  請求項1に記載のイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法において、
     一旦ガス溜めに貯めておいた推進剤を定常状態よりも高い流量で予めマイクロ波を照射したプラズマ生成室に放射することによりプラズマ着火を行うことを特徴とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給方法。
  3.  推進剤貯蔵タンクに貯蔵された推進剤を一旦減圧して貯えるアキュムレータからイオン源及び中和器へ供給する前記推進剤の流量を制御する流量制限器と、前記イオン源及び中和器への推進剤の供給又は停止を制御するスラスタバルブとの間に推進剤を溜めるガス溜めを設けたことを特徴とするイオンエンジンのプラズマ着火用ガス供給システム。
