Selon l'invention, un service de tonalité de retour d'appel peut être configuré par détermination d'une indication pour suggérer un ou plusieurs appelants à un utilisateur d'un dispositif de téléphonie mobile et obtention de données d'appels historiques décrivant des appels récents effectués par des appelants récents à destination du dispositif de téléphonie mobile dans une période de temps récente. Après identification d'un certain nombre d'appelants fréquents pour lesquels aucune tonalité de retour d'appel personnalisée n'est actuellement provisionnée, l'utilisateur est invité à effectuer une sélection dans une liste de tonalités de retour d'appel personnalisées qui sont disponibles pour être provisionnées pour des appels entrants en provenance du ou des appelants fréquents. Dans certains cas, l'utilisateur peut envoyer un message à l'appelant, permettant à l'appelant de sélectionner sa propre tonalité de retour d'appel personnalisée par l'intermédiaire d'une interface utilisateur fournie par un fournisseur de service de tonalité de retour d'appel.
