Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to balancing devices and, more particularly to balancing devices for use in training and rehabilitation. It is particularly applicable as a balancing device for use in ski and snowboard training and rehabilitation.
- ski and snowboard simulators exist in the present market, however none of these devices offer a complete training and rehabilitation solution.
- Skier's Edge is a ski training machine that simulates full leg extension and retraction (the side to side movement of the skier's legs).
- the user's feet are able to pivot in a horizontal plane as well as extend left and right to simulate the same movements that occur during leg extension and retraction when skiing.
- the problem with this device is that it is unable to simulate changing terrain.
- Pro Ski Simulator (TM) is also a ski training machine that simulates full leg extension and retraction.
- the user's feet are able to pivot in a vertical plane (left and right in a downwards direction), rather than in a horizontal plane, to simulate terrain to a small degree.
- the device is optionally pivotally mounted to an inclined frame to simulate the body of the user moving forwards down the slope during a leg extension. The problem with this device is that it is not able to fully simulate a changing terrain.
- SkyGym is a motorized ski-simulator configured to be used in conjunction with a computer or console and appropriate software. This device can be used either wearing trainers or the like or ski boots.
- the vertical and horizontal inclines of the platform on which the user stands are automatically changed depending on the run being simulated by the software.
- the vertical and horizontal inclines can also be adjusted by the user to a small degree by pressing down and exerting a force on springs provided on the platform to further simulate the terrain, i.e. the platform is not fixed and is able to move a little under the user's feet.
- the user's feet are also able to pivot both in the horizontal plane together and in the vertical plane individually to rock from side to side to simulate the same movements that occur during leg extension and in part to simulate the terrain.
- the problem with this device is that the individual vertical plane movement of the user's feet is quite small and the horizontal incline is sprung so not much balance is needed by the user before a stop is provided. Furthermore, the weaker leg of the user cannot be worked harder than the dominant leg of the user.
- a balancing device comprising a mounting plate, a level plate and a rocker wherein the rocker is configured to maintain the level plate in a horizontal position with respect to the ground when an equal force is applied to both sides of the rocker.
- a balance device suitable for use as both a ski simulation device and a ski training device and a rehabilitation device.
- the balance device can be used as both a training device and a rehabilitation device as well as for general physiotherapy.
- the balance device not only helps to improve balance but also to strengthen knee and thigh muscles.
- the mounting plate comprises first and second foot plates connected thereto via a connection means.
- connection means comprises a connection rod located on each of the foot plates and connection apertures located on the mounting plate wherein the connection rod is configured to locate within a connection aperture at each end thereof.
- first and second foot plates comprise a foot retaining means.
- the foot retaining means comprises straps, ski boot bindings or snowboard boot bindings.
- the balance device to be used with the same footwear worn during skiing or snowboarding, i.e. ski or snowboard boots.
- the mounting plate is configured to be inclined with respect to the level plate.
- the incline is between about 0° and about 60°, more preferably the incline is between about 0° and about 40°.
- the incline is fixed or the incline is variable in use.
- the rocker comprises a first straight edge, a curved edge and a second straight edge wherein when the curved edge is in contact with the ground the device is being balanced and when either the first or second straight edges are in contact with the ground the device is over balanced and the first or second straight edge acts as a stop.
- the mounting plate is provided with first and second weight mounts such that additional weight can be loaded onto either side of the device for strength training. This allows one leg to be worked to a greater extent than the other leg, where for example one leg is weaker than the other leg.
- the mounting plate is provided with a spirit level.
- the device is configured to generate an output indicating the amount of time in and out of balance.
- the device is configured to generate an output indicating the amount of time each deviation from the balanced position takes.
- the distance between the foot plates can be changed.
- the first and second foot plates are configured to rotate independently of one another.
- Figure 1 illustrates a front view of the balancing device according to a first embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 2 illustrates a top view of the balance device according to a first embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 3 illustrates a side view of the balancing device in an inclined position according to a first embodiment of the present invention.
- the balance device 10 comprises a mounting plate 12, an incline means (not shown) and a rocker 14.
- the incline means is configured to adjust the incline of the mounting plate 12.
- the balance device 10 has a front 16, a back 18, a left side 20 and a right side 22. When the user is located on the balance device 10 the user is positioned so that the user is facing in the same direction as the front 16 of the balance device 10.
- the incline means is configured to raise the mounting plate 12 at the back 18 of the balance device 10 whilst keeping the mounting plate 12 at the front 16 of the balance device 10 un-raised.
- the movement of the mounting plate 12 by the incline means can be seen more clearly in Figure 3.
- the incline means is configured to simulate the incline of a ski slope.
- the incline means in one alternative provides for a series of fixed angles, in an alternate provides for a variable degree of angles, in another alternative is motorized and configured to vary the angle in use whilst the user is in position balancing.
- the rocker 14 is configured to allow the left 20 and right 22 sides of the balance device 10 (regardless of the incline of the mounting plate 12 generated by the incline means) to remain balanced and the same distance away from the ground as each other when an equal force is applied to both sides of the balance device 10.
- the rocker 14 comprises a curved edge 24 configured to contact the ground and two straight edges 26, 28 configured to act as stops.
- the rocker 14 is symmetrical about centre line 30 such that should a greater force be applied to one side the curved edge 24 will allow the rocker 14 to rock to the side with the greater force applied (until as a maximum the particular straight edge contacts the ground) causing the mounting plate 12 to move as well and move out of the horizontal plane with respect to the ground.
- the aim being to not allow the particular straight edge to contact the ground and for the user to adjust the force applied to both sides to bring the rocker 14 and thus mounting plate 12 back into being in the horizontal plane with respect to the ground.
- the overall aim being to keep the mounting plate 12 level at all times.
- a spirit level may be provided on the top of the mounting plate.
- a further spirit level may be provided on the front 16 of the balance device 20 so that instructors can also readily see how level (or not) the mounting plate 12 is.
- Connected to the mounting plate 12 are foot plates 32, 34.
- the foot plates 32, 34 are raised above the level of the mounting plate 12 and are individually vertically pivotally connected to the mounting plate 12, such that the foot plates 32, 34 can individually tilt in two directions down towards the mounting plate 12 towards the left 16 and right 18 sides of the balance device 10.
- the foot plates 32, 34 are individually pivotally connected to the mounting plate 12 by means of a connecting rod 26, 28 and connecting apertures 40, 42, 44, 46.
- a plurality of connecting apertures are provided such that the distance between the foot plates 32, 34 and/or the height of the foot plates 32, 34 above the mounting plate 12 can be changed to alter the difficultly of the balance to be performed by the user.
- the foot plates 32, 34 are closer together a much larger difference in force to be applied is needed to move the rocker 14 compared to when the foot plates 32, 34 are further apart.
- the foot plates can be located at different distances from the symmetrical line 30 so that different forces need to be applied by each foot to keep the rocker 14 balanced.
- a means for attaching weights to either one or both sides of the balance device 10 may be provided. This may for example be a weights tree mounted one each side of mounting plate 12. The weights tree is essentially a protrusion extending from the surface of the mounting plate which is configured to locate within the central aperture of typical weights.
- foot retainers Connected to the foot plates 32, 34 are foot retainers (not shown) configured to retain the feet of the user in position on the foot plates 32, 34.
- the foot retainers in one alternative are straps and in another alternative ski or snowboard boot bindings, or other suitable retaining means.
- rests are provided to stabilize the balance device 10 whilst the user is mounting/demounting the balance device 10, or at rest.
- a seat (not shown) is provided to allow the user to rest without the need to demount the balance device 10.
- the balance device 10 is provided with an electrogoniometer configured to measure the deviation of the user from a well balanced position and the amount of time spent deviated.
- the balance device 10 is provided with an electromyography configured to measure the muscular contribution of each leg of the user when for example weights have been added to determine the dominant leg, and the improvement of the weaker leg over time.
