Definitions
- This invention relates to a packet for elongate smoking articles, such as, for example, cigarettes.
- the smoker has to tear off a part of the upper portion of the inner wrapper, left uncovered by the outer wrapper.
- the packet can no longer be effectively re-closed, which means that cigarettes may accidentally fall out of the packet when the smoker is not using it and is keeping it, for example, in a pocket or handbag.
- the part of the inner wrapper that remains open after being torn is relatively reduced in size because the central part of the top end face of the packet is covered by a tax stamp or label which limits the size of the opening and thus, access to the cigarettes inside the packet is not very easy.
- the packet leaves the cigarettes inside it totally exposed to air, which rapidly dries the cigarette tobacco and deteriorates its organoleptic properties. Disclosure of the invention
- This invention has for an aim to provide a packet for elongate smoking articles, in particular, cigarettes, which is free of the drawbacks typical of the prior art packets described above.
- the invention accordingly provides a packet for elongate smokers' articles as set out in the appended claims.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a first embodiment of a sheet of wrapping material designed to wrap a group of smoking articles to form an inner wrapper
- FIG. 2 illustrates a further sheet of wrapping material designed to be wrapped around the inner wrapper of Figure 1 to form an outer container;
- FIG. 3 shows a partly adhesive label for closing the outer wrapper of Figure 2;
- FIGS. 4 and 5 are a front and a rear perspective view, respectively, of the packet of this invention in the closed condition;
- FIGS. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the packet of this invention in two different configurations of the packet in the open condition;
- Figure 8 shows a variant of the sheet of wrapping material of Figure 2;
- FIGS 9 and 10 are perspective views of a packet incorporating the sheet of Figure 8 in two different configurations of the packet in the open condition.
- FIG. 1 1 illustrates a further variant of the packet of the preceding figures.
- the numeral 1 in Figures 4-7 and 9-1 1 denotes in its entirety a packet for smoking articles, comprising a soft inner wrapper 2 in the shape of a parallelepiped with rectangular base, and a hollow outer container or wrapper 3 with an open top end 4 which allows access to a corresponding top wall or face 5 of the inner wrapper 2.
- the inner wrapper 2 is made by folding an inner sheet 8 of wrapping material, made for example of paper, metallized paper or layered plastic material, around a group 6 of cigarettes 7 which are arranged parallel to a longitudinal axis A of main extension of the packet 1 .
- the sheet 8 of inner wrapping material has a rectangular shape and will be wrapped around the group 6 of cigarettes 7 about four fold lines 9, pre-weakened if necessary, extending thereon parallel to the axes of the cigarettes 7 making up the group 6, that is, parallel to the axis A.
- the fold lines 9 define, in pairs of contiguous lines 9, two small side walls 1 1 of the inner wrapper 2, between which there lies a front large wall 12 of the selfsame inner wrapper 2.
- the lateral edges of the sheet 8 of inner wrapping material overlap and are glued to each other at a median zone of a rear large wall 12' of the inner wrapper 2.
- the end faces of the inner wrapper 2, identifiable as top and bottom and labelled 5 and 13, respectively, are also provided with lines of weakness 15, which might be pre-weakened or which might be the result of folding the portions of the sheet 8 that define the top end face 5 and the bottom end face 13.
- the lines of weakness 15 form an arrangement which reproduces the shape of an isosceles trapezium.
- the larger base of each of these portions of lines of weakness 15 reproducing the shape of an isosceles trapezium is situated on one edge of the sheet 8 (an upper edge in the case of the lines of weakness 15 of the top end face 5 and a bottom edge in the case of the lines of weakness 15 of the bottom end face 13), whilst the smaller bases of these trapezoidal shapes run along respective lines of weakness 5' and 13' perpendicular to the fold lines 9 and, when the inner wrapper 2 is assembled, delimiting the selfsame end faces 5 and 13, respectively.
- the zone of the sheet 8 extending along the portions on top of the walls 1 1 and 12 and forming part of the top end face 5, and an upper portion of the front wall 12 itself are provided with a line of weakness 14 which is substantially in the shape of a T and which delimits a removable portion 14' of the sheet 8 itself.
- the line of weakness 14 is defined by a plurality of consecutive slits along which the removable portion 14' of the sheet 8 can be torn off and removed.
- the line of weakness 14 starts at the two upper edge zones of the sheet 8 respectively included in the portions of the sheet 8 on top of the walls 1 1 and has two stretches 16, equal and parallel to each other, and parallel to the fold lines 9 and, looking at Figure 1 , extending downwardly. Extending from the lower ends of the stretches 16 there are two respective horizontal stretches 17, which are equal to, and extend towards, each other and which go a short way into the portion at the top of the front wall 12 and forming part of the top end face 5. Extending from the ends of the stretches 17 opposite to those connected to the stretches 16, there are two further stretches 18, extending downwardly, looking at Figure 1 , substantially parallel to each other and going a short way into the front wall 12.
- the top end face 5 is made ( Figure 6) by first folding two small lateral portions 5a and 5b of the respective annular portion (not illustrated) over the group 6 in such a way as to define, on the annular portion itself, two trapezoidal flaps 5c and 5d, respectively front and rear, and positioned, respectively, in proximity of the front wall 12 and in proximity of a rear wall 12' of the selfsame inner wrapper 2, and then folding the trapezoidal flaps 5c and 5d over the group 6 in such a way that the rear flap 5d overlaps the front flap 5c.
- the bottom end face 13 is made at the same time and in exactly the same way as the top end face 5 just described.
- the outer container 3 is made by folding round the inner wrapper 2 a sheet or blank 20 of outer wrapping material (shown in a plan view in Figure 2, with the lacquered surface in view) which is provided with a plurality of fold lines 21 , preferably pre- weakened, extending on the sheet 20 itself parallel to the axes of the cigarettes 7 making up the group 6, that is, extending parallel to the axis A.
- the sheet 20 is preferably thicker than the sheet 8, since the sheet 20 is made preferably of paperboard, a plastic material or a metallic material. In the description of the sheet 20, frequent reference will be made to the sheet 20 as it appears in Figure 2, using terms such as "upper”, “lower”, “top”, “bottom” and the like to indicate parts of the sheet 20 identifiable by those terms in the representation of Figure 2.
- the sheet 20 has a substantially rectangular shape and the fold lines 21 extend between an upper transversal edge 22 of the sheet 20 itself, defining the annular edge of an open end 23 of the outer container 3 (shown in Figure 6) and a transversal fold line 24 parallel to the upper edge 22 and located in the proximity of the bottom portion of the selfsame sheet 20.
- the upper transversal edge 22 and the transversal fold line 24 are perpendicular to the axis A.
- the fold lines 21 together define two large panels 25 and 26 (left and right), rectangular in shape, a small middle panel 27, rectangular in shape and positioned between the large panels 25 and 26, and two small end panels 28 and 29 adjacent to the large panels 25 and 26, respectively, on the side opposite to the small middle panel 27.
- the fold line 24 delimits five tongues 30, 31 , 32, 33 and 34 aligned with the panels 28, 25, 27, 26 and 29, respectively, and constituting the bottom portions of the sheet 20.
- the tongues 30, 31 , 32, 33 and 34 are substantially in the shape of isosceles trapeziums, with larger base located on the fold line 24, and the sides of them connected to the panels 28, 25, 27, 26 and 29 are equal in length to the respective panels 28, 25, 27, 26 and 29 adjacent to them.
- a tongue 35 and a tongue 36 Extending outwardly from the edge 22 at the panels 28 and 27 are a tongue 35 and a tongue 36 which are substantially rectangular in shape and equal in width to the panels 28 and 27 themselves.
- the tongues 35 and 36 might be absent.
- the tongues 35 and 36 when present, are folded towards each other (in a manner not illustrated so as not to reduce the understandability of the drawings) and laterally delimit the upper lateral inside zone of the packet 1 to prevent tobacco particles from falling out.
- an upper central portion of the panel 25 has an indentation 25', which is directed downwards, looking at Figure 2, and which is shaped substantially like a rectangle with rounded corners.
- the outer container 3 is obtained by folding the two panels 25 and 26 squarely relative to the panel 27, and further folding the panels 28 and 29 squarely relative to the panels 25 and 26 in such a way as to place and glue the panel 28 in contact with the outside surface of the panel 29.
- the tongues 32 and 34 are folded squarely relative to the panels 27 and 29 and towards each other, and the tongue 30 is folded squarely relative to the panel 28 and is glued in contact with the outside surface of the tongue 34.
- the outer container 3 is completed by folding squarely the tongue 33 relative to the panel 26 and the tongue 31 relative to the panel 25, and gluing the tongue 31 to the outside surface of the tongue 33 so as to define, together with the tongues 30 and 32, a bottom wall 37 of the outer container 3 itself.
- the tongues 35 and 36 are then folded squarely about the respective fold lines coinciding with portions of the edge 22, in such a way that they adhere to respective lateral end portions of the top end face 5 of the inner wrapper 2.
- the panels 25, 26, 27 and 28 of the sheet 20 respectively define, and are labelled with the same reference numerals as, a front wall 25, a rear wall 26 and two side walls 27 and 28 of the outer container 3.
- the packet 1 is thus defined, and labelled with the same reference numerals, by a front wall 25, a rear wall 26, two side walls 27 and 28, a top wall 10 and a bottom wall 46.
- the top wall 10 and the bottom wall 46 lie in the same plane as the top end face 5 and the bottom end face 13 of the inner wrapper 2.
- Figures 4 and 5 are front and rear perspective views, respectively, of the packet 1 in the closed condition and Figures 6 and 7 are perspective views of the packet 1 in two different configurations of it in the open condition.
- the packet 1 is kept in the closed condition by a label 39 shown in detail in Figure 3.
- an upper outer edge zone of the large panel 26 of the outer container 3 is connected, preferably by gluing, to a rectangular border portion 38 of the adhesive label 39.
- the label 39 has a generally rectangular shape and comprises the rectangular border portion 38, whose large side is connected to a rectangular middle portion 40 whose other large side is connected to a large side of a further rectangular portion 41 .
- the other large side of the rectangular portion 41 is connected to the base of a portion 42 which is substantially in the shape of an isosceles triangle whose base is considerably greater in length than its height, for example in a ratio in the order of 5:1 .
- the portion 42 constitutes a manual pull tab for pulling the adhesive label 39.
- the upper outer edge zone of the large panel 26 glued to the portion 38 of the adhesive label 39 has a height between 3 and 20 mm, and preferably has a height substantially equal to 10 mm.
- a tax label or stamp 39' ( Figure 5) is glued in a zone comprising a bottom part of the rectangular border portion 38 of the label 39 and an underlying part of the panel 26 of the outer container 3.
- the adhesive label 39 is folded in such a way that its rectangular middle portion 40 covers the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 and its rectangular portion 41 and triangular portion 42 are placed against the upper zone of the front wall 12 of the inner wrapper 2 and against the panel 25 of the outer container 3 ( Figures 4 and 5).
- a zone 44 substantially in the shape of an upturned U ( Figure 3) of the rectangular portion 41 and located along the two small sides and along the large side which the triangular portion 42 is connected to is covered by a film of replaceable, non-drying glue. More specifically, when the packet 1 is in the closed condition, the U-shaped zone 44 covered by a film of replaceable, non-drying glue is in contact with the panel 25 of the outer container 3 in proximity of the perimeter of the indentation 25'.
- the adhesive label 39 covers with its rectangular middle portion 40 the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 and its portions 41 and 42 are placed against the upper zone of the front wall 12 of the inner wrapper 2 and against the panel 25 of the outer container 3.
- the portion 40 is glued permanently to the rear trapezoidal flap 5d of the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 and the portion 41 is glued replaceably to the panel 25 in proximity of the perimeter of the indentation 25'.
- the portion 42 of the adhesive label 39 extends downwardly, looking at Figure 4, and, since there is no glue on it, can easily be gripped between two fingers by a smoker and used to pull the label 39 away from the panel 25 of the outer container 3 and from the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 so as to lift the label 39 and take cigarettes 7 out of the packet 1 . Since the rear trapezoidal flap 5d of the top face 5 is glued to the zone 43 of the label 39, this pulling action ( Figure 6) simultaneously causes the rear trapezoidal flap 5d itself to be lifted away from the remaining underlying portion of the top face 5, thus partly uncovering the ends of some cigarettes 7.
- the underlying, removable portion 14' of the sheet 8 comprising portions of the flaps 5a, 5b and 5c of the top face 5 and an upper portion of the front wall 12 of the inner wrapper 2 can be gripped between two fingers by the smoker and removed from the inner wrapper 2, thereby exposing more ends of cigarettes 7.
- the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 is left with an extraction opening 14" for taking out the cigarettes 7 and which, according to the foregoing, is made through the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 and through a top portion of the front wall 12 of the inner wrapper 2 itself.
- the position and size of the line of weakness 14 are such as to guarantee that after the removable portion 14' has been removed, no portion of the sheet 8 is visible through the indentation 25' of the panel 25 of the outer container 3, since the line of weakness 14 itself is slightly further in than the indentation 25' by a stretch between 1 and 5 mm in length.
- the label 39 can be returned against the panel 25 of the outer container 3 and its portion 41 sticks to the panel 25, outside the perimeter of the indentation 25', thanks to the presence, on the portion 41 itself, of the zone 44 covered by a film of replaceable glue.
- the shape of the upper end portion of the group 6 of cigarettes 7 uncovered, that is to say, of the extraction opening 14" for taking out the cigarettes 7, also makes it easier to take out the cigarettes because the part of the removable portion 14' corresponding to the flaps 5a, 5b and 5c of the top face 5 is relatively wide and because the part of the removable portion 14' corresponding to the upper portion of the front wall 12 of the inner wrapper 2 is wider than the indentation 25' ( Figure 7).
- the maximum width of the removable portion 14' is preferably chosen in such a way that, once the removable portion 14' has been removed, only two lateral end portions of the group 6 of cigarettes 7, whose depth is substantially equal to the diameter of a cigarette 7, remain covered by the remaining part of the top face 5 (the further portions of the flaps 5a, 5b and 5c of the top face 5 not forming part of the removable portion 14'). These lateral end portions may, if necessary, be covered by the tongues 35 and 36.
- Figure 8 illustrates a sheet or blank 47 for making the outer container 3, shown in a plan view with the lacquered outside surface in view and comprising a plurality of rectangular panels 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29.
- the sheet 47 of Figure 8 is similar to the sheet 20 of Figure 2 but differs in that the tongues 35 and 36 are absent and in that the edge 22 has extending outwardly from it, respectively at the panels 27, 26 and 29, a tongue 48 substantially having the shape of a quarter of a circle centred substantially at the point of intersection between the edge 22 and the fold line 21 which joins the panels 27 and 26 to each other, a tongue 50 having a substantially rectangular shape, and a tongue 49 also substantially having the shape of a quarter of a circle centred substantially at the point of intersection between the edge 22 and the fold line 21 which joins the panels 26 and 29 to each other.
- the convexity of the tongues 48 and 49 is opposite to the side of them connected to the respective panels 27 and 29.
- the tongues 48, 49, 50 are connected to each other in contiguous pairs at respective straight vertical sides and the width of the selfsame tongues 48, 49, 50, measured along the edge 22, is equal to the width of the panels 27, 26 and 29 to which they are connected.
- Each of the tongues 48 and 49 is provided, at a median zone of it, with a line of weakness 51 coinciding with a radius of the quarter of the circle defining the tongue 48, 49 itself.
- the packet 1 of Figures 9 and 10 is characterized by an outer container 3 made using the sheet 47 and comprises an inner wrapper 2 which is the same as the one described with reference to the packet 1 of Figures 4-7, housing a group 6 of cigarettes 7.
- the outer container 3 made using the sheet 47 has at the top of it, at one of its two sides and at the back, an outwardly extending cover 52 defined by the tongues 48, 49 and 50.
- an adhesive label 39 of the type described above has a portion 38 which is glued to an upper outer edge zone of the large panel 26 and a zone 43 of its rectangular portion 40 which is glued to a portion of the surface of the cover 52 opposite to that facing towards the group 6 of cigarettes 7.
- the surface of the cover 52 facing towards the group 6 of cigarettes 7 has a portion which is glued permanently to the rear trapezoidal flap 5d of the top face 5 of the inner wrapper 2 and the label 39 has a portion 41 which is glued replaceably to the panel 25 of the sheet 47 in proximity of the perimeter of the indentation 25'.
- each of the tongues 48 and 49 is folded at an angle about the respective line of weakness 51 , thus constituting a "concertina" which laterally delimits the respective upper lateral inside zone of the packet 1 , preventing tobacco particles from falling out.
- This action of containing the tobacco particles is also performed when the packet 1 is fully open ( Figure 10).
- the indentation 25' is laterally offset relative to the panel 25, and its transversal dimension is smaller than the one considered above with reference to Figures 2, 6 and 9, so as to leave space for applying to the panel 25 itself, next to the indentation 25', a logo 53, either printed and/or embossed, of the manufacturer of the packets 1 , or other graphics and/or embossing.
- the manually removable portion of the inner wrapper 2 may have the dimensional and shape features described with reference to the removable portion 14', or it may have other shapes and sizes, even as far as covering the full width of the inner wrapper 2 (as shown in Figure 1 1 ).
