Description

DEVICE FOR CLOSING A SUBSTANTIALLY RECTANGULAR PASSAGE OPENING IN A WALL PART, AND METHOD FOR APPLICATION THEREOF
The present invention relates to a device for temporarily closing a substantially rectangular passage opening in a wall part, in particular a letterbox.
The invention further relates to providing with such a device a temporary closure of a substantially rectangular passage opening in a wall part, and thereby providing access to a building.
In the situation where buildings are temporarily vacant, for instance when a flat or apartment temporarily has no tenant, the letterbox will not be emptied. A known problem which causes inconvenience is that after a time the letterbox will overflow with advertising material and other postal items.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device which aims to prevent the above stated drawbacks.
Said object is achieved with the device for temporarily closing a substantially rectangular passage opening in a wall part, in particular a letterbox, comprising:
- a plate part which can be placed against a front side of the wall part and which can support against a peripheral edge of the passage opening, and which is configured to at least largely cover the passage opening in a closing position;
- one or more stop members arranged on or close to the plate part and located in the passage opening in the closing position; and
- clamping means which can support against a rear side of the wall part in order to clamp the wall part between the plate part and the clamping means through the passage opening in the closing position.
The plate part covers the passage opening for at least the greater part - or substantially wholly - such that a possibly uncovered part of the passage opening is at least not large enough to allow objects such as paper advertising material or a postal item to be forced therethrough.
In the closing position the stop members are located in the passage opening and function as stop preventing the possibility of the plate part in front of the passage opening being moved aside by rotating or sliding away thereof.
Using such a device a letterbox is temporarily closable in a manner which leaves no permanent traces.
According to a preferred embodiment, the plate part extends over a distance from the stop members such that the passage opening is guaranteed to be substantially fully covered in the closing position when the one or more stop members lie against the inner edge of the passage opening. Because the plate part extends over a sufficiently great distance from the stop members, the plate part will continue to cover the passage opening even if the plate part is displaced relative to the wall in which the passage opening is present to one of the extreme positions in which the stop members make contact with the inner edge of the passage opening.
According to a further preferred embodiment, the one or more stop members have a height dimension H of between H=15 mm and H=30 mm.
The Dutch authorities require minimal dimensions of a letterbox slot of at least 265 millimetres in length and at least 32 millimetres in width. Stop members with a height dimension of between 15 mm and 30 mm hereby limit displacement of the plate part in height direction. In the case of a stop member with a height dimension of 30 mm it suffices for the plate part to extend over a distance of at least 4 mm from the stop member.
If however a stop member with a height dimension of 15 mm is for instance applied, the plate part will, in the case a stop member is arranged centred in height direction on the plate part, have to extend more than ( 32-15 ) /2 = 8.5 mm from the stop member . With 2 mm of overlap margin on either side, the plate part then preferably has a minimum height dimension of 36 mm. According to yet another preferred embodiment, the one or more stop members span a length L of between L=180 mm and L=265 mm. The one or more stop members hereby also limit translation of the device in the longitudinal direction of the passage opening, whereby the plate part is displaceable only minimally and the plate part is thus guaranteed to cover at least the greater part of the passage opening in the mounted position.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the stop member comprises a beam shape arranged on the rear side of the plate part.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the beam-shaped stop member is the upper side of a T-piece.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the T-piece comprises a carrier part extending transversely of the plate part, and the clamping means comprise a clamping part reciprocally movable therein using a spindle and extending over substantially the height direction of the passage opening in the closing position.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the clamping part has a length of between 34 mm and 264 mm, and more preferably has a length of between 40 and 80 mm.
At a maximum of 264 mm, the clamping part is on the one hand short enough to be placed through the letterbox from the outside and to then be rotated. At a minimum of 34 mm, the clamping part is on the other hand long enough to span the passage opening in the transverse direction, usually the height direction.
It is noted that stop members are preferably applied in this embodiment which prevent rotation so as to prevent the possibility of the device being removed from the passage opening.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the spindle can be operated from the side of the plate part using operating means for the purpose of driving the clamping part in reciprocally movable manner, and a cover part lockable relative to the plate part is provided in order to thereby cover the operating means of the spindle. Although the operating means may be arranged on the inside, it is preferably (also) arranged on the outside, this being advantageous in the case of deep letterboxes as often used in apartment buildings. The device can then be inserted into the letterbox from the outside and locked relative to the letterbox, so closing the letterbox.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the cover part lockable relative to the plate part encloses a hollow space. This space is for instance sufficiently large to store a physical key or electronic access card therein.
According to yet another preferred embodiment, the cover part is provided with a code lock. The lock prevents unauthorized persons being able to remove the physical key or electronic access card from the cover part and so being able to gain access to the building. The use of a code lock is on the other hand particularly advantageous since the code for unlocking the cover part can be transmitted over great distance using a telephone or electronic message to a person who has to gain access to the building, such as for instance a service engineer or handyman. It is not necessary to collect the physical key or electronic access card elsewhere, such as for instance from a housing corporation which manages a building. A person such as a service engineer can moreover enter the building at a desired time.
The invention further relates to a property, in particular a building, provided with a device as described in the foregoing.
The invention further relates to a method for providing a temporary closure of a substantially rectangular passage opening in a wall part, in particular a letterbox, using a device according to the invention, the method comprising the steps of:
- arranging the plate part against a front side of the wall part, wherein one or more stop members arranged on or close to the plate part are placed in the passage opening; and
- supporting with clamping means against the rear side of the wall part in order to clamp the wall part between the plate part and the clamping means through the passage opening in the closing position.
The invention further relates to a method for providing access to a building using a device according to the invention, the method comprising the steps of:
- entering a release code;
- unlocking the key holder;
- opening the unlocked key holder;
- removing the key from the key holder; and
- gaining access to the building with the key.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention are further elucidated in the following description with reference to the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective front view of a wall part with a passage opening with closing device according to the invention arranged therein;
Figure 2 is a perspective rear view of the situation shown in figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective front view of a first situation for placing the closing device in a passage opening;
Figure 4 is a perspective rear view of the situation shown in figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a perspective rear view of an alternative closing device clamped fixedly in a passage opening.
In Figures 1 and 2 closing device 1 is arranged in a passage opening 2 of a wall part 8. Closing device 1 comprises a plate part 14, the rear side 18 of which lies against front side 10 of wall part 8. Clamped against rear side 12 of wall part 8 is a clamping part 32, whereby wall part 8 is clamped between rear side 18 of plate part 14 and clamping part 32.
Arranged on the front side 16 of plate part 14 is a cover part 36 attached with a rear plate 37 to plate part 14.
Arranged on rear side 18 of plate part 14 are one or more stop members 20 which ensure that plate part 14 is displaceable to only limited extent relative to passage opening 2. This ensures that plate part 14 extends at all times some distance over the peripheral edge 4 of passage opening 2. This is achieved in that, in the situation where the one or more stop members 20 make contact with inner edge 6 of passage opening 2, plate part 14 extends sufficiently far to close passage opening 2.
The embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a stop member 20 with a beam shape which forms part of a T-piece 24. The carrier part 26 of T-piece 24 extending from rear side 18 of plate part 14 comprises a recess 28 in which a spindle 30 is received. Rotation of spindle 30 moves a clamping part 32 reciprocally in screwable manner in recess 28. Clamping part 32 is hereby displaceable between a position clamping wall part 8 (Figures 1, 2 and 5) and a position in which there is some distance between clamping part 32 and wall part 8 (Figures 3 and 4) . This latter position makes it possible to arrange closing device 1 easily in a passage opening 2 of a wall part 8, which will be further elucidated below with reference to Figures 3 and 4.
In the situation shown in Figure 3 the longitudinal direction of plate part 14 is oriented transversely of the longitudinal direction of passage opening 2 and the longitudinal direction of clamping part 32 is substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of passage opening 2. Because clamping part 32 is shorter than the length of passage opening 2, in the position shown in Figure 3 closing device 1 can be passed with carrier part 26 and the clamping part 32 present therein through wall part 8 to an inserted position wherein clamping part 32 is located behind rear side 12 of wall part 8.
When plate part 14 with the one or more stop members 20 mounted thereon is then rotated a quarter-turn, clamping part 32 can no longer move back through passage opening 2.
Rear side 18 of plate part 14 is then placed against front side 10 of wall part 8, wherein the one or more stop members 2 are located in passage opening 2.
Engaging the operating means 34 with a tool suitable for the purpose enables rotation of spindle 30, whereby clamping part 32 can be displaced to the clamping position clamping wall part 8 as shown in Figures 2 and 5.
In this clamping position the one or more stop members 20 prevent the possibility of closing device 1 being removed from passage opening 2.
It is noted that it is particularly advantageous for operating means 34 to also be located at least on the front side 16 of plate part 14 (Figure 1), whereby closing device 1 can be inserted through passage opening 2 and locked relative to passage opening 2 from outside a building, so closing passage opening 2 in the above described manner. However, in order to prevent unauthorized persons being able to rotate spindle 30 when operating means 34 are located on the front side, a cover part 36 is applied which covers operating means 34. Cover part 36 is lockable and, in a particularly advantageous preferred embodiment, encloses a hollow space 38 in which a physical key or an electronic access card can be received.
Because cover part 36 is lockable with a code, such as a code lock 40, the closing device may hold a physical key or an electronic access card with which for instance a service engineer can gain access to a building. The code of code lock 40 reguired for this purpose can, if desired, be transmitted to this service engineer by telephone or via an electronic message. After leaving the building, the service engineer can once again leave the physical key or electronic access card in the chamber enclosed by cover part 36 and lock this chamber using code lock 40.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 5 two individual stop members 20 arranged on rear side 18 of plate part 14 are applied instead of a beam-shaped stop member as shown in Figures 2 and 4.
Although they show preferred embodiments of the invention, the above described embodiments are intended only to illustrate the present invention and not to limit the scope of the invention in any way. The rights described are defined by the following claims, within the scope of which many modifications can be envisaged .
