Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method of processing at least one designated item, and more particularly, processing at least one designated item which is recyclable.
  • Co-mingling involves placing all the different grades of recyclable items in one bin and separating the grades of items at a central depot.
  • This method may use a refuse collection vehicle to collect the items from the bins at various households wherein the items placed in the vehicle are compressed by a compression unit or compactor to increase the amount of items that can be collected.
  • the benefits of this method are that it is simple for households to implement, the method of collection is cheap and efficient, and sorting is centralized at a material recycling facility where it often can be at least partially automated.
  • a problem with the co-mingling method is that the different grades of recyclable items can become cross-contaminated (e.g. broken glass gets mixed with paper), particularly when the items are compacted in a refuse collection vehicle, lowering the value of the grades of recyclable items leaving the material recycling facility.
  • Source separating involves separating the different grades of recyclable items before they are collected to be taken to a material recycling facility. This avoids the different grades of recyclable items becoming cross-contaminated, and thus the value of the grades of recyclable items leaving the material recycling facility would be higher than those from a co-mingling method.
  • landfill taxes having been increasing.
  • government targets for recycling are now based on carbon saving. This has made it financially worthwhile for local authorities and waste management companies to effectively recycle textiles and shoes. For textiles to have a re-use or a recycling value they must be kept clean, dry and free from pungent smells. At present only about 50% of textiles and shoes are recycled.
  • a problem with collecting textiles via the co-mingling method is that when textiles are collected by a refuse collection vehicle which has a compression unit, the textiles may be contaminated by sludge formed from the mixing of liquids from different household waste containers collected in the refuse collection vehicle. This sludge is black, stains and has a pungent smell and makes textiles contaminated by it unsuitable for re-use, and it would not be cost effective to launder the contaminated textiles.
  • the source separation method would overcome this problem, and the Government has a preference for local authorities to use the source separation method. However, many local authorities have long standing contracts with waste management companies for the co-mingling method making it difficult to change to the source separation method. Also, the source separation method is more complicated for households to implement, resulting in a lower rate of textiles collection.
