Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of processing at least one designated item, and more particularly, processing at least one designated item which is recyclable.
- Co-mingling involves placing all the different grades of recyclable items in one bin and separating the grades of items at a central depot.
- This method may use a refuse collection vehicle to collect the items from the bins at various households wherein the items placed in the vehicle are compressed by a compression unit or compactor to increase the amount of items that can be collected.
- the benefits of this method are that it is simple for households to implement, the method of collection is cheap and efficient, and sorting is centralized at a material recycling facility where it often can be at least partially automated.
- a problem with the co-mingling method is that the different grades of recyclable items can become cross-contaminated (e.g. broken glass gets mixed with paper), particularly when the items are compacted in a refuse collection vehicle, lowering the value of the grades of recyclable items leaving the material recycling facility.
- Source separating involves separating the different grades of recyclable items before they are collected to be taken to a material recycling facility. This avoids the different grades of recyclable items becoming cross-contaminated, and thus the value of the grades of recyclable items leaving the material recycling facility would be higher than those from a co-mingling method.
- landfill taxes having been increasing.
- government targets for recycling are now based on carbon saving. This has made it financially worthwhile for local authorities and waste management companies to effectively recycle textiles and shoes. For textiles to have a re-use or a recycling value they must be kept clean, dry and free from pungent smells. At present only about 50% of textiles and shoes are recycled.
- a problem with collecting textiles via the co-mingling method is that when textiles are collected by a refuse collection vehicle which has a compression unit, the textiles may be contaminated by sludge formed from the mixing of liquids from different household waste containers collected in the refuse collection vehicle. This sludge is black, stains and has a pungent smell and makes textiles contaminated by it unsuitable for re-use, and it would not be cost effective to launder the contaminated textiles.
- the source separation method would overcome this problem, and the Government has a preference for local authorities to use the source separation method. However, many local authorities have long standing contracts with waste management companies for the co-mingling method making it difficult to change to the source separation method. Also, the source separation method is more complicated for households to implement, resulting in a lower rate of textiles collection.
- a method of processing at least one designated item comprising the steps of: providing a waterproof bag which has a one way valve; placing at least said one designated item in the waterproof bag; sealing the waterproof bag; placing the bag and at least one other item in a compression means of a vehicle for collecting items; operating the compression means such that at least the bag is compressed and wherein gas in the bag is expelled via the valve without the bag bursting; removing the waterproof bag from the compression means; unsealing the waterproof bag; and removing the contents of the bag.
- the designated item is preferably a recyclable item.
- Recyclable items preferably comprise textiles and/or shoes and/or other valuable recyclable items.
- textiles and/or shoes for example, may be designated by, say, the local authority as items to be recycled in the waterproof bags.
- a plurality of waterproof bags may be provided. At least said one designated item may be placed in each said waterproof bag.
- the vehicle for collecting items may be a refuse collection vehicle.
- the bag is sufficiently strong so that it is not damaged or punctured by glass or metal containers or parts thereof in the vehicle.
- the at least one other item placed in the compression means may be recyclable.
- the above method can be used in a co-mingling recycling method. Thus, it would be simple to implement.
- the ability to separate or mix different grades of recyclable items in one collection method provides a greater freedom to households and local authorities as to the form of the recycling method that they wish to operate.
- the step of operating the compression means may include causing at least said one other item to be compressed.
- the bag may be reused, the bag being resealable.
- the bag is preferably washed before being reused.
- the method comprises distributing the resealable waterproof bags to a plurality of premises.
- At the premises at least one designated recyclable item is placed in a said bag, and the bag is sealed.
- the bag is placed into a bin along with at least said one other item.
- the contents of the bins of the premises are substantially emptied into the vehicle, and the compression means is operated so that at least the bags are compressed.
- the bags and other items are ejected from the vehicle at a material recycling facility and the bags are removed from the other items.
- the contents of the bags are removed and the bags are washed.
- the bags are then redistributed to a plurality of premises.
- Figures 1 and 2 are views of a waterproof bag for use in a method of processing recyclable items in accordance with the invention
- Figure 3 is a view of a bin for holding the waterproof bag and a refuse collection vehicle for collecting the waterproof bag from the bin;
- Figure 4 is a flow diagram of the method.
- a hardwearing waterproof bag 1 has an interior 2.
- the bag 1 has an opening 3 at one end and has a strap 4 alongside the opening 3.
- the strap 4 extends beyond the opening 3 in opposite directions.
- the distal ends of the strap 4 each have a clasp 5.
- a one way valve 6 or gas escape valve is at the opposite end of the bag 1 to the opening 3 and connects the interior 2 of the bag 1 to the outside.
- the bag 1 has printed instructions 7 on it for its use.
- the waterproof bag 1 is arranged to be placed in a bin 8 with other items 9 and be collected by a refuse collection vehicle (RCV) 10 as will be described later.
- the RCV 10 has a compression unit 1 1 or compression means, which compresses items collected by the RCV 10 comprising the waterproof bag 1 .
- a plurality of the resealable waterproof bags 1 are distributed to a plurality of premises or households (step 100), and at each premises there is a recycling bin 8.
- Designated recyclable items 12 (see Figs. 1 and 2) or recyclates, such as textiles, are placed in the interior 2 of the waterproof bag 1 via the opening 3.
- the open end of the bag 1 is then rolled or folded down and over the strap 4 (see Fig. 1 ) several times to form a roll top which forms a watertight closure, sealing the items 12 placed in the bag 1 (step 1 10).
- the two strap clasps 5 are then clasped together (see Fig. 2), the joined clasps providing easy and secure closure.
- the waterproof bag 1 is then placed into the bin 8 (step 120).
- Other items 9 are also placed in the bin 8.
- An RCV 10 visits the various premises and the contents of the bins 8 are emptied into the RCV 10 (step 130).
- the compression unit 1 1 of the RCV 10 is operated such that the waterproof bags 1 are compressed (step 140).
- the items 9 emptied from the bins 8 which are not held in the bags 1 may also be compressed by the compression unit 1 1 . Compression of the bags 1 causes gas in each bag 1 to be expelled via the one way valve 6 without the bag 1 bursting.
- the RCV 10 goes to a material recycling facility (MRF) where the waterproof bags 1 , and the items 9 not held in the bags, are ejected from the RCV 10 (step 150).
- MRF material recycling facility
- the MRF has what is known as a bag splitter.
- a pre-sort takes place before items 9 reach the bag splitter and this involves removing large metal objects which may damage the bag splitter.
- the bags 1 are removed from the items collected and not held in the bags 1 (step 160).
- the bags 1 are unsealed by the clasps 5 being unclasped and unrolling or unfolding the bag 1 to expose the opening 3, the recyclable items 12 contained therein then being removed (step 170). This arrangement keeps the bag entrance clean and free from sludge when the items 12 are removed.
- the bags 1 are then washed (step 180) and redistributed to the various premises.
