Definitions
- the subject of the invention is an apparatus and a process for pulsed laser cutting of frequency or pressure-controlled gas.
- a conventional method is to work with a pulsed beam laser. At each pulse, typically 100 J for a duration of about 5 ms, the material to be cut is locally raised to a temperature higher than that of the melting, a small volume of highly liquid metal and therefore low viscosity is obtained almost immediately .
- the apparatus is supplemented by a gas blowing auxiliary accompanying the laser directed to the cutout and effectively expelling the molten metal in the form of fine slags, without these slags adhering to the sides of the cut. This process is almost instantaneous, and the next pulse of the laser attacks a next portion of the metal while the previous slags have disappeared from the cut. This method therefore allows efficient cutting.
- the evacuation of liquid slag is also too fast for the blowing gas can solidify them as they are present in the cut, which creates no obstacle to evacuation.
- the invention will find utility primarily for continuous beam lasers with a power greater than 1 kW, beyond the power commonly achieved by pulsed beam lasers.
- One area where the invention will find use in particular is the cutting in very hostile environments (nuclear, biology, chemistry) where the cutting head is moved by a robot arm or other device whose movements are not very precise and where the cutting parameters such as the distance from the cutting head to the workpiece and its speed are approximate; vibrations are more often observed; and the characteristics of the pieces to be cut can also be known approximately or be very variable, and in particular their thicknesses. All this explains that the ideal values of the cutting parameters will be unknown or likely to change constantly, without being able to apply these changes in the process, so that insufficient results, including incomplete cutting, can be observed.
- the invention therefore relates to an automatic laser cutting process comprising blowing a flow of gas to a cutting site in order to scavenge slags and gases produced by cutting, the blowing being carried out in pulses, characterized in that what it consists of continuously measuring an intensity laser backscattering and modifying a pulse frequency so as to maintain said intensity at a minimum.
- the frequency is advantageously modified in steps, whose value can be between 1 Hz and 3 Hz.
- the blowing frequencies may remain within limits beyond which it is considered that other measures than the blowing adjustment must be taken to ensure a satisfactory cut. These limits can be 2 Hz and 20 Hz for example. When they are reached, an increase in the power of the laser is imposed, this increase being advantageously temporary.
- the laser beam may pass through the blast nozzle, the laser beam and the blowing gas having parallel directions.
- the nozzle prefferably has an oblong opening section through one end of which the laser beam passes. This arrangement makes it possible to blow the gas immediately behind the beam, where the melt has just appeared.
- the oblong opening section may be rectangular, elliptical, etc.
- a preferred shape is, however, obtained when the nozzle is divided into two unequal portions by a constriction, one of the smaller portions being traversed by the laser beam, another of the larger portions being traversed by the blowing gas.
- the blowing auxiliary may also comprise a plurality of nozzles all directed towards the cutting site, one of the nozzles is directed parallel to the laser beam, and another of the nozzles obliquely to this beam. Their breaths are therefore directed in different and convergent directions, which is likely to improve the removal of slag.
- a plurality of oblique nozzles may also be preferred, so as to provide respective blow flow rates parallel to each other and intersecting the laser beam at different portions of this beam and so as to exert effective evacuation over a greater depth of the beam. cut piece.
- blowing pulses are made with phase offsets between the nozzles when a plurality of them exist, again in order to improve the slag evacuation.
- the auxiliary comprises a rotary distributor in the supply duct, the member comprising at least one opening of the supply duct periodically extending the duct. power supply to allow blowing pulses.
- the orifice and the supply duct have rectangular sections with parallel sides and perpendicular to a direction of movement of the member in front of the supply duct. This arrangement makes it possible to obtain better drawn pulses. Frequencies equal or not blowing pulses can be retained for the nozzles when a plurality of them exists, without that better characteristics were then found unequivocally.
- the peak pulse pressures can be between 3 and 15 bar. It should be noted that a complete stop of the blowing between the pulses is disadvised, so that an intermediate pressure between 0.5 and 1 bar can be recommended between the pulses. All these pressures are present at the outlet of the nozzle or each of them as appropriate.
- the same effect of improving the cut can be obtained by controlling the pressure of the gas pulses rather than their frequency, or by slaving these two parameters at once.
- the pressure can be slaved between 1 and 15 bars in steps of 0.5 bar, or more generally less than one bar.
- the servo process is identical.

- FIG. 5 illustrates a variant of the cutting head end
- FIGS. 6A, 6B, 6C and 6D illustrate sections of blowing nozzles
- FIG. 7 is a timing diagram of blowing
- FIG. 8 is a flowchart of the method of the invention.
- FIG. 1 schematically shows a laser cutting apparatus and its environment.
- the apparatus is housed in a cell (1) known as case.
- An object to be cut such as a glove box used in certain industries, is placed on a support (3) in the cell (1).
- the apparatus (4) is suspended from the wall of the cell (1) via a 5-axis table (5).
- the table (5) consists of a group of parts sliding one inside the other so as to allow movements of the apparatus along the three main axes of translation X, Y and Z, and in a wrist (6) hinged to the table (5) for subjecting the apparatus (4) to rotations ⁇ and ⁇ about two axes perpendicular to each other.
- a flexible cable (7) suspended on the table (5) over part of its length connects the apparatus (4) to a control installation (8); it comprises an optical fiber and a duct respectively supplying the laser light and the blowing gas to the apparatus (4) from generators not shown in the control installation (8).
- the installation (8) is still used to move the appliance (4) by acting on the table (5) and the wrist (6) so as to place it and orient it in front of it all the faces of the box (2), which can be cut completely by intersecting passes. All these elements being known, they will not be illustrated in more detail and we turn to the commentary of Figure 2.
- the apparatus (4) comprises a head (9) cylindrical conical ends and which is supported by the wrist (6) . The upper end of the head
- the head (9) carries a first gas distributor (12) which terminates at a first end (13) of the gas conduit, and a second feed distributor (14), which terminates at a second end (15) of the gas conduit .
- the first distributor (12) has an outlet end passing through the wall of the head (9), but the second (14) remains external to the head (9) and its outlet end forms an angle with it, which is can be obtained by hooking it tangentially to the conical outer wall of the nozzle (11).
- the laser beam (16) passes through the head (9) downwards and out through the nozzle
- the device further includes a semi-reflective blade (35) on the path of the beam of laser (16), which passes light to the plate (19), but reflects that which is returned from this plate (19). Since the semi-reflecting plate (35) is oblique, the light is returned to a detector (36) on the side of the head (9), and a focusing lens (37) and an interference filter (38) are arranged in front of the detector (36) to focus the light reflected back on it and pass only the wavelength of the laser beam (16).
- the detector (36) is connected to a servo device (39) not shown in detail and which controls the laser as well as the blowing of the gas in a manner to be described later.
- Each of the distributors (12 and 14) comprises, as shown in Figure 3, a cylinder (21) mounted in a cylindrical housing (22) and rotatable under the action of a motor (23).
- the barrel (21) includes a coaxial recess (24) opening toward an outlet nozzle (25) and one or more slots (26) distributed around its periphery and communicating with the recess (24); the rotation of the barrel (21) passes them regularly in front of the inlet end (27) of the distributor where the end (13 or 15) of the gas duct is connected; FIG.
- FIG. 4 shows that the slots (26) are of rectangular section, with long sides in the axial direction of the barrel (21), and that the section (28) internal of the inlet orifice (27) is also rectangular , with still large sides directed in the axis of the barrel (21).
- the dispenser (14) is similar to the dispenser (12) (except possibly the dimensions or proportions) except that it still includes a powder introduction conduit (29), moreover optional.
- the powder can help to project the slag by communicating its kinetic energy (it will often be the same material as the plate), or induce an exothermic reaction in contact with the molten bath, which increases its temperature.
- FIG. 5 diagrammatically represents a design derived from FIG.
- the oblique distributor (14) would be provided with several examples (141, 142, 143, etc.), their outlet orifices being all placed parallel to one another and making an angle with the main direction of the head (9), and superimposed so as to intersect the laser beam (16) at different depths of the plate (19).
- the laser beam (16) is projected towards the plate (19) and the bore.
- the main flow of gas through the first distributor (12) and the head (9) projects the melt slags downwardly.
- the distributor (14) or the distributors (141, 142, 143) exert an additional blow towards the anterior limit of the cut and complete the action of the main blow.
- the rotating barrels (21) repeatedly seal the dispensers and chop the blow gas flow rates into a pulsed character. It has been seen that this characteristic ensures a good evacuation of slag out of the plate (19).
- Many ways of producing a suitable blowing exist provided that this pulsed flow principle is respected, by varying the number and directions of the dispensers and of their outlets for example.
- the nozzle (11) advantageously has an oblong orifice and directed in the direction of the cutout so that the laser beam (16) is in front of this orifice and that the gas blowing from the first dispenser ( 12) occurs a little behind the laser beam (16), where the liquid slags have formed.
- 6A, 6B, 6C and 6D respectively illustrate a rectangular orifice (30A), an oblong orifice (30B) with rounded ends, an elliptical orifice (30C), and a hole (30D) in the form of a keyhole complex comprising a rectangular main portion devoted to blowing gas and a circular anterior portion adjusted to the laser beam diameter (16) and for its passage, these portions being joined by a constriction (31).
- the power of the continuous beam laser can be several kW depending on the thickness to cut, typically several centimeters.
- the gas pulses can have durations of 1 ms to 100 ms each.
- An adjustment of the pulse durations can also be obtained by varying the speed of rotation of the barrel (21) when the orifices (26) of the barrel (21) pass in front of the end (13 or 15) of the gas duct.
- An easy servocontrol to achieve can be achieved for this, by providing the barrel (21) of an angular position encoder. Adjusting the average rotational speed of the barrel (21) makes it possible to adjust the frequency of the blowing pulses, and thus to improve the discharge of cutting debris.
- the average rotational speed of the barrel (21) is twofold and comprises a first invariable speed used to pass the orifices (26) in front of the end (13 or 15) of the gas duct with a duration of constant pulse, and a second variable speed, used for the other angular positions of the barrel (21) to vary the duration between each of the gas blowing pulses according to the feature of the invention.
- a larger portion of the light of the laser beam (16) is backscattered when the cutout becomes insufficient, and a portion reaches the detector (36) after having entered the cutting head (9) and is reflected by the semi-circular blade. reflective (35).
- the servo device (39) continuously measures the intensity of the backscattered light that arrives at the detector (36).
- the servo-control is therefore based on a continuous variation of the gas-blowing flow rate and in particular on the frequency of the pulses, while endeavoring to keep the signal of the detector (36) at the lowest level. If, however, the minimum thus obtained is too high, the power of the laser beam (11) will be increased to make the more energetic cutting. This enslavement concerns all gas flows when there are several.
- the rest of the program runs in a loop. It is first verified successively to steps E4 and E5 that the frequency F of the pulses of the gas is between the minimum and the maximum F m i n and F max . If this is the case, the frequency of the pulses is modified and becomes equal to F + KxPAS (E6). In the next step E7, a new measurement S2 of the detector (36) is recorded. If it is smaller than the previous value SI (E8), the scan parameter K is kept at 1, the value of SI is replaced by that of S2 (E9) and a new loop is performed from E4. In the opposite case (E10), K becomes equal to -1 and here again a new loop is accomplished from E4.
- this loop is that the frequency of the scanning pulses is constantly changed while measuring the backscattered light to the detector (36). If this value decreases, which means that the cut is better, the scanning direction is favorable and the latter is continued under the same conditions; if, on the contrary, this value increases, the scanning resumes in the opposite direction to search for a minimum of detected value.
- step E4 reveals that the frequency has passed below the minimum, the parameter K is set to 1, the laser is set to the higher power P2 and an acquisition of the signal SI is then made (Ell); and if step E5 reveals that the frequency has become greater than the maximum frequency, K is set to -1, the power P2 is set and an acquisition of the signal S1 is done again (E12).
- step E6 we then return to step E6 in both cases. We therefore return to the desired scan area to search for the minimum of the detector 36 measurement, considering that the increase in the power of the laser will give a satisfactory cut even if it is in the presence of an extra thickness or disturbances in the process. This increase of power is temporary and stops automatically, with a return to PI after a determined duration without the process being altered otherwise.
- the frequency of the pulses is constant but it is the pressure of the gas in the blowing nozzles which is enslaved, for example by changing the degree of opening of adjustable valves.
- the pressure limits can be 1 bar and 15 bar, and the incremental pressure step of 0.5 bar.
- the process is exactly the same as above, except that the above values replace PI, P2 and PAS, and that the rotational speed of the barrel (21) remains constant.
