Description

A DOUBLE-SIDED APPLICATOR DEVICE
The present invention relates to a device for treating the skin, the nails, the hair, or the mucous membranes .
The invention relates more particularly, but not exclusively, to a double-sided applicator device that is adapted to cleansing and to applying makeup to the skin.
Fibrous or spongy disks, also called pads or
sponges, are known for use in applying makeup to the face or removing it. Applications FR 772 967, GB 474 732, and EP 1 362 524, and US patents Nos. 5 346 753, 1 661 778, and 5 913 318 describe examples of devices of that type.
Makeup or makeup-removal disks are generally made out of non-woven fabric, cotton or foam, and as a result present a porosity that causes relatively major and in- depth absorption of the composition that is brought into contact therewith. This makes them difficult to clean, and such devices are sometimes intended for single use only .
In addition, their manufacture may require heat- sealing and/or cutting, thereby making them relatively costly to produce for single-use only.
Consequently, there exists a need to benefit from a device that remedies the above-mentioned drawbacks, at least in part.
There also exists a need for a device that is simple to make while presenting an agreeable appearance.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention thus provide a device for applying at least one composition to human keratinous materials, the device comprising:
a first portion presenting at least one first treatment face for performing a first action such as applying a makeup or a care product; and
a second portion presenting at least one second treatment face for performing a second action, preferably complementary to the first, such as absorbing, cleansing, or removing impurities, in particular sebum or sweat, and having a surface state that is different from the surface state of the first face;
the first and second portions being fastened in removable manner, one on the other, via fastener means, making it possible, in particular, to hold them one on the other in the working configuration, with their treatment faces opposite one from the other.
One portion may possibly be arranged on a surface that is stationary relative to the other portion, and may be fastened in removable manner on the surface.
The term "surface state that is different" should be understood to mean that at least one of the physical or chemical characteristics of said faces is different.
The first and second portions are advantageously movable relative to each other by being fastened to each other in a removable manner.
The first face of the first portion may be an application face adapted to applying a composition, in particular makeup, and is preferably relatively non- absorbent. The second face of the second portion may be a face that presents an absorption capacity greater than the absorption capacity of the first face, that is adapted to absorb a composition that has been applied to keratinous materials in order to prepare them for
receiving makeup or for cleansing them, or that is adapted to absorb perspiration or sebum independently of any application of composition.
The first and second portions may be of natures, densities, thicknesses, dimensions, and/or areas that are optionally identical or different, e.g. being covered with fabric, flocking, and/or elastomer. They may be of colors and/or have portions in relief that are different. Both faces may be flocked, with flocking bristles of hardnesses that are different.
By means of the invention, the device is easier to clean as a result of one portion being movable relative to the other, this making it possible to separate the two portions. This also makes it possible to avoid any soiling or contamination of one of the portions while the other portion is being washed.
In addition, the device of the invention may be reused easily. In particular, after one or more uses, the user may wash the treatment face of the first portion and/or the treatment face of the second portion by means of any suitable cleaning agent, and then dry it before reuse .
The treatment faces of the first and second portions may be used separately, and/or in successive manner. In particular, the treatment face of the second portion makes it possible to prepare the skin for applying a makeup composition and/or a care product with the first portion. Such a preparation of the skin, by absorbing sweat and/or sebum, may turn out to be very useful for user, in particular in very hot and/or humid countries.
The device of the invention may present a shape that is generally flat, of outline that is generally
optionally circular, optionally polygonal, or oval, and optionally perforated. The device may be in the form of a powder puff i.e. pad ("houppette" in French.
When observed from the front, the first or second treatment face, that preferably is substantially plane, may occupy an area in the range 4 square centimeters (cm2) to 50 cm2. The device may be in the form of a circular disk or of a semi-circular disk.
The thickness of each of the first and second portions may lie in the range 3 millimeters (mm) to
30 mm, preferably in the range 4 mm to 20 mm, more preferably in the range 6 mm to 12 mm.
Preferably, the flexibility of said portions is such that, during use, the device can be used with it being possible for said device to fold at right angles on contact with the skin, without damaging the device and without said portions becoming separated. The first and/or second portion (s) is/are preferably made out of a flexible material.
They may be made, at least in part, out of a
thermoplastic material, e.g. styrene-ethylene-butylene- styrene (SEBS) ; styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) ; a
silicone rubber; latex rubber; butyl rubber; nitrile rubber; ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) ; a thermoplastic elastomer; a polyester, polyamide,
polyethylene, or vinyl elastomer; a polyolefin such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) ; polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ; ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) ; polystyrene (PS) ; polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ; polyoxymethylene (POM) ; polyamide (PA) ; polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) ; or polyether block, amide (PEBA) . In particular, it is possible to use materials known under the trade names
Hytrel®, Cariflex®, Alixine®, Santoprene®, Pebax®, this list not being limiting.
The first and/or second portion (s) may be molded out of a thermoplastic material.
The first and/or second portion (s) may be made out of a non-porous material, in particular a flexible, non- porous, thermoplastic material.
The first and/or second portion (s) may be made out of a water-absorbent material, or out of a material containing water-absorbent compounds.
The treatment faces of the first portion and/or the treatment face of the second portion may be provided with a flocked coating or with some other kind of coating, so as to make application and/or absorption easier.
The user may take hold of the device between the fingers, preferably the thumb and the index finger, said thumb and said index finger respectively coming into contact with the two opposite faces. In a variant, the user uses a handle to which the first and second portions are secured.
The second treatment face may in particular include a coating that is different from the coating of the first treatment face. For example, the first and second treatment faces are flocked in different ways, the flocking bristles differing, for example, in their materials, their sections, their implantations, their heights, their diameters, or their shapes, amongst other things. The bristles may be plant or synthetic fibers, e.g. viscose, cotton, linen, bamboo, acetate, propionate, polyamide, PET, amongst others.
The first and second portions may not include fibers other than the bristles of the flocked coatings. This reduces their porosity and makes them easier to clean.
In exemplary embodiments, the treatment face of the first portion is defined by a coating of polyamide bristles or a mixture of polyamide and viscose bristles.
When present, the flocking may cover a smooth surface and/or presenting portions in relief, e.g. ribs or beads .
The first and second portions may optionally be made out of the same material, and may optionally be the same color. It turns out to be advantageous to make the two opposite treatment faces of the device with different colors, so as to enable the user to identify them more easily .
Preferably, the device is not permeable between its two treatment faces, thereby avoiding a liquid in contact with one face being able to reach the other face by capillarity. This non-permeable character may be
obtained by using a material that is not porous to liquids such as water, in order to make at least one of said portions, preferably both of them.
Advantageously, the first and/or second portion (s) is/are made out of a non-porous material, thereby making it/them easier to wash. The first and/or second
portion (s) may include one or more antibacterial and/or antifungal agents that, by way of example, are
incorporated in the thermoplastic material that is used to make them. The fastener means make it possible to fasten one of the portions to the other in removable manner.
The first and second portions may be fastened to each other in a removable manner, while being inseparable from each other, thereby forming a single-piece assembly. In a variant, the first and second portions may be completely separable from each other, and may be
reassembled at will by the user.
The first and second portions may be interconnected via a hinge connection. The hinge connection enables the first and second portions to be movable relative to each other, while being connected to each other in captive manner. The hinge connection may be a film hinge.
The fastener means may be defined by the first and second portions. In a variant, the fastener means are defined, at least in part, by at least one additional part that, by way of example, is not secured to the first and/or second portion (s) while it/they are being cleaned. The additional part may define a grip surface for
gripping the device, and it may be flexible or rigid.
The fastener means may include portions in relief making it possible to fasten, by snap-fastening or by friction, the first portion on the second portion, e.g. a male portion in relief on one of the portions and a female portion in relief on the other portion. For example, one of the first and second portions includes a central opening, and the other of the first and second portions includes a portion in relief that is suitable for engaging in the central opening so as to fasten one of the portions on the other.
The fastener means may include a fastener tooth on at least one of the first and second portions, which fastener tooth is suitable for engaging in a
corresponding housing of the other of the first and second portions, so as to hold the two portions together in their superposed configuration. The fastener tooth is preferably fastened in a way that can be easily unfastened without a tool, so as to enable the user to open the device in order to clean it.
In exemplary embodiments, the fastener means
comprise: a first snap-fastener portion in relief, e.g. in the form of an annular flange, at the periphery of at least one of the first and second portions; and a second portion in relief, e.g. in the form of an annular groove, in the other of the first and second portions. It is thus possible to benefit from a device that is particularly attractive, without any visible junction between the two portions at its periphery. It may be useful for the portion that surrounds the other and that includes the groove to be coated with flocking at its periphery, so as to enable the edge face of the device to be used, if necessary.
The fastener means may include an annular collar having an inwardly-directed rim below which one of the portions is engaged in order to be held by the other portion .
In order to make it easier to separate the two portions, one of them may be provided at its periphery with a notch that forms a thumb cut and that makes it easier to take hold of the two portions with respective hands, so as to separate the portions from each other.
The first and second portions may also be provided with fastener means that include surfaces of the Velcro® type that are suitable for fastening together by co¬ operation between loops and hooks.
The applicator device of the invention may include a handle to which the first and/or second portion (s) may be fastened .
The handle may be provided with a housing, e.g.
adapted to receive the hinge connection of the first and second portions, when said portions are superposed one on the other. The hinge connection may be hidden when the portions are fastened to the handle. The first and/or second portion (s) may include at least one fastener member, in particular opposite from the hinge connection, if any, and suitable for being inserted in at least one corresponding housing of the handle. In particular, each of the first and second portions may include a fastener endpiece, the two
fastener endpieces being superposed one on the other, and then inserted in the corresponding housing of the handle, so as to secure said portions and the handle.
The device of the invention may be used with any cosmetic, dermatological , or pharmaceutical composition for topical application, and in powder, gel, cream, lotion, or cake form.
The device of the invention may be made available to the consumer with at least two different compositions for using in conjunction with respective ones of the two portions, e.g. a makeup composition for using with the makeup-application face, and a skin-cleansing composition for using with the more absorbent face. This may all be made available within a common package in the form of a kit .
The cleansing composition is a soap, a shampoo, or a makeup-remover, for example, while the other composition is a makeup composition, a sunscreen preparation, or a care product, for example, one or the other of the compositions possibly containing plant extracts from living organisms, vitamins, proteins, enzymes, mineral salts, oligo-elements, amongst others.
If necessary, each composition is put into the desired dosage form by any suitable means such as freeze- drying, atomizing, dehydrating, or crystallizing, amongst others .
Each of the first and second portions may be washed after each use, or after several uses. In a variant, one of the portions may be a single-use portion and the other may be reused. Other exemplary embodiments of the invention also provide a kit comprising a device as defined above, and at least one composition for application with one of said treatment faces.
The invention also provides a kit comprising a package containing a device, with the first and second portions in the non-assembled state.
Other exemplary embodiments of the invention also provide a cosmetic treatment method for treating the skin or other human keratinous materials by means of a device as defined above, the method comprising the step
consisting in:
preparing the surface to be treated by means of the second face, possibly using a cleansing composition on the second face; and
applying makeup to the surface to be treated by means of the first face.
The method may include the step consisting in washing one of said portions separately after the two portions have been separated, which portions may remain connected together during the washing operation, e.g. when a hinge connection is present.

Figures 12 to 15 show variants of devices of the invention, each including a handle.
Figures 1 to 3 show an example of a device 1 of the invention .
As shown, the device 1 may present the shape of a disk, and it makes it possible to apply a composition, in particular a cosmetic, to keratinous materials such as skin.
The device 1 comprises a first portion 2 presenting a first treatment face, indeed two opposite first
treatment faces 2a and 2b in this example, and a second portion 3 presenting a second treatment face 3a.
The first and second portions 2 and 3 may be
superposed one on the other in the working configuration, as shown in Figure 3. Advantageously, the first and second portions 2 and 3 present substantially the same thickness E, and substantially the same dimensions in face view, in particular the same diameter D when the outline is circular, as shown.
The first and second portions 2 and 3 may be made out of a material that is flexible or semi-flexible.
In the embodiment shown, the first and second portions 2 and 3 are interconnected via a hinge
connection 4. The hinge connection enables the first and second portions 2 and 3 to be movable relative to each other, while being connected to each other in captive manner. As a result, each of the portions 2 and 3 may be cleaned more easily, independently of the other, e.g. with a specific cleaning agent. The drying time for drying the device may also be reduced since, when the device is open, as shown in Figure 1, the surface area exposed to the air is greater.
The first and second portions 2 and 3 may be made with at least one single-piece common part that is injection-molded out of a thermoplastic material, for example. In a variant, they may constitute two distinct portions that are secured to each other by the hinge connection 4 that is thus fitted on at least one of the portions .
The first and second portions 2 and 3 may be made out of the same material, and may optionally be the same color .
The ability of the first and second portions 2 and 3 to move relative to each other makes it possible, e.g. in the open state, to have two application faces 2a and 2b, suitable for applying a makeup powder, for example. By way of example, the face 3a of the second portion 3 may be suitable, prior to applying makeup, for absorbing any sebum and perspiration present on the skin. Preferably, the device 1 is used not in the open state, but with the portions 2 and 3 in the superposed configuration.
The faces 2a and 2b of the first portion 2 and the face 3a of the second portion 3 are provided with
respective outer coatings 5 and 6, which coatings are adapted to the desired use of each of the faces.
The coating may be a flocked coating and/or a coating made up of grains.
By way of example, the coating may comprise a powder, fibers, a mixture of several different powders, a mixture of several different fibers, and/or a mixture of powder and fibers . The presence of grains is preferable on the face 3a side that is intended for cleansing, e.g. for performing a peel.
The coating 5 of the faces 2a and 2b is different from the coating 6 of the face 3a.
When flocking is used, the flocking bristles may be constituted by viscose and/or polyamide fibers for the faces 2a and 2b, and by viscose, cotton, linen, bamboo, propionate, acetate, polyamide, and/or PET for the face 3a.
In a variant, the face 2b is not intended to be brought into contact with the skin, and it does not have a coating 5.
The device 1 of the invention includes fastener means for fastening the first and second portions 2 and 3 in the superposed configuration.
As shown, the fastener means may comprise
complementary snap-fastener portions in relief that are made with the first and second portions 2 and 3.
By way of example, the second portion 3 includes a tooth 7 that is suitable for snap-fastening in a
corresponding housing 8 of the first portion 2, e.g.
formed in the thickness thereof, as shown.
Folding the first and second portions 2 and 3 one on the other by means of the hinge connection 4, and
fastening them by snap-fastening the tooth 7 in the housing 8, makes it possible to obtain a compact device 1 that presents the general shape of a disk.
In an embodiment, the second portion 3 including the tooth 7 may be made by cutting a fibrous material that has been subjected to flocking, or a fibrous material that is covered by a film made of thermoplastic material, or chamois cloth covered with a film of thermoplastic material. In a variant, the tooth 7 is made by
injection-molding with the remainder of the device.
In the embodiment in Figures 1 to 3, the coatings extend over the edge of the first and second portions 2 and 3. Where appropriate, the hinge connection 4 may be flocked .
In the embodiment shown, the fastener means include a single tooth 7. In a variant, the fastener means include more teeth 7, or portions in relief that are arranged in some other way, e.g. at least one tooth 7 that is further away from the hinge connection 4 than it is from the opposite edge.
Figures 4 and 5 show variant embodiments of the device 1 in Figures 1 to 3.
In the embodiment in Figure 4, each of the first and second portions 2 and 3 includes a central opening 9 such that, in its working configuration, the applicator device 1 presents a through opening, e.g. a substantially- circular through opening, as shown.
In the embodiment in Figure 5, the first portion 2 includes a central opening 9, and the second portion 3 includes a portion in relief 10 that is suitable for engaging in the opening 9 of the first portion 2. By way of example and as shown, the portion in relief is made out of the same material as the second portion 3, which is thus thicker in the region that is superposed with the opening 9. By way of example, the projection 10 of the second portion 3 is held by friction in the opening 9.
The device may include the hinge connection 4, as shown. In a variant, said hinge connection is absent.
Where appropriate, the projection 10 passing through the opening 9 has a surface that is flush with the face 2a and that is covered with a coating that is identical to the coating 5, or, in a variant, that is different.
On the first face of the device, two coatings can thus be arranged, one surrounding the other, and having
properties that are different.
When it exists, the connection between the first and second portions 2 and 3, that allows them to move
relative to each other while connecting them in captive manner, may be of any type, e.g. a hinge as shown, or a ball joint, or a pivot, or a slideway, amongst others.
Figures 6 to 8 show another embodiment of a device 1 of the invention.
The device 1 comprises: a first portion 2 presenting a portion in relief at its periphery, e.g. in the form of an annular flange 11; and a second portion 3 presenting a groove 12 at its periphery, in which groove the portion in relief 11 of the first portion 2 may snap-fasten.
Thus, the first portion 2 is completely detachable from the second portion 3. As a result, the first and/or second portion (s) 2 and 3 may be cleaned individually.
The first portion 2 may contribute to stiffening the second portion 3 when the two portions are assembled together. In particular, the stiffness of the second portion 3 may be insufficient to enable it to be used in satisfactory manner on its own.
The first portion 2 may be detached from the second portion 3 when desired, e.g. after each use, so as to be washed individually, without having to clean the second portion 3.
By way of example, the first portion 2 may be made of foam or of cotton, and it may optionally be covered in flocking, or it may even include chamois cloth on its application face 2a, e.g. adhesively-bonded or embedded onto an underlying substrate of the first portion 2.
The face of the rim 32 that is on the same side as the face 2a of the first portion may not present the coating 6, as shown. However, the coating may extend over the edge of the second portion.
In the embodiment shown, the first portion 2 comes substantially flush with the adjacent face 33 of the rim 32, but in a variant that is not shown, the first portion 2 could be thicker and project relative to the face 33.
In a variant, the bottom wall 35 of the housing 34 of the second portion 3 that receives the first portion may include additional fastener means for fastening the first portion, or it may include a convex or other shape for giving the first portion that covers it any desired shape .
In the embodiment in Figure 9, the first portion 2 is made with a thumb cut 36 that makes it easier to detach the first portion 2 from the second portion 3.
In the embodiments in Figures 6 to 10, the first portion 2 may present a single face 2a or 2b that is provided with a flocked coating, in particular its outer face 2a. In a variant, both faces 2a and 2b of the first portion 2 may be provided with a flocked coating.
The device 1 may present an outline that is not circular, e.g. that is semi-circular, as shown in
Figure 10. Thus, as shown, the device 1 may comprise a first portion 2 and a second portion 3 that are
interconnected via a hinge connection 4 on their
rectilinear edges.
Figure 10 shows the possibility of the device 1, when not in use, being received in a housing 22 that is provided for this purpose in a casing 20. In an adjacent housing 21, for example, the compact may contain at least one composition for application to keratinous materials by means of the device 1, in particular a makeup
composition .
Figure 11 shows the possibility of making the applicator device 1 in such a manner as to house it in a container 30 containing a composition for application to keratinous materials, e.g. containing a liquid
foundation, and being provided, for example, with a dispenser pump for dispensing the composition. By way of example, the container 30 may be recessed in its central region for receiving the device 1 that is retained by friction in its housing.
Figure 12 shows the possibility of placing the device 1 of the invention in a casing 40 with a
possibility of the device 1 moving relative to the casing 40, the casing being provided with a hinge 41, for example .
In particular, the device 1 may comprise first and second portions 2 and 3 each presenting a central opening 9, as shown in Figure 4, so as to form a washer shape, and the hinge 41 has a pivot pin that is inserted through the openings 9.
The first and second portions 2 and 3 extend beyond the casing 40 so as to be able to be applied to the region to be treated, the casing 40 defining a grip surface .
The casing 40 may also be made in such a manner as to make it possible to remove the first and second portions 2 and 3 so as to replace them or clean them.
Figure 13 shows a device 1 of the invention
including a handle 50 to which the first and second portions 2 and 3 can be fastened while in their
superposed state.
By way of example and as shown, the handle 50 is provided with a housing 51 in which the hinge connection 4 is received. When the portions 2 and 3 are fastened to the handle, the hinge connection 4 may be completely hidden, as shown in Figure 14.
By way of example, the hinge connection 4 is held by clamping in the handle 50 or by any other means, e.g. by snap-fastening or by means of an auxiliary locking member (not shown), e.g. movable on the handle 50.
Figure 15 shows a variant device 1 including a handle 50 to which the first and second portions 2 and 3 may be fastened.
In this embodiment, each of the first and second portions 2 and 3 includes a respective fastener endpiece 52, opposite from the hinge connection 4.
The fastener endpieces 52 may be superposed one on the other and then inserted in the corresponding housing 51 of the handle 50. The invention is not limited to the embodiments described .
Characteristics stemming from the embodiments shown may be combined together within variants that are not shown.
The expression "comprising a" should be understood as being synonymous with "comprising at least one" unless specified to the contrary.
