Definitions
- the present invention refers to a rehabilitation device.
- the invention refers to a device for the rehabilitation and the improvement of both motor functions and muscle strength of the hand, wrist and forearm.
- Known conditions in which it may be necessary to use a rehabilitation therapy for joints and muscles of the hand, wrist or forearm are for example: trigger finger, bone fractures, tendon injuries, complex trauma, ligament injuries, Dupuytren disease, arthrosis, just to name a few.
- a device of the aforesaid type is described in PCT/IB2009/050334.
- This known device allows to train the joints of the muscles of the hand, wrist and forearm and can be effectively used in many circumstances, for example by musicians, and especially by pianists, to develop the muscles and the sensitivity of their hands.
- the known devices are not able to meet the multiple needs of rehabilitation and exercise, that may arise as a result of particular illnesses or special needs, such as professional or sports ones.
- the main object of the invention is to provide a flexible rehabilitation device, allowing a wide range of uses thus overcoming the problem of the current state of the art, i.e. of having to use different devices depending on the needs .
- a further object of the invention is to provide a device of the aforesaid type, that can be used by people of any anthropometric dimensions.
- the devices according to the prior art are not generally produced in large numbers and their structure is therefore often complex and expensive to be obtained on industrial scale.
- the known devices are generally designed for private use and they are not suitable to be used intensively by different people, for example in rehabilitation centres or gyms.
- a non-last object of the invention is to provide a rehabilitation device simple to be manufactured and, therefore, that can be industrially produced at low cost, although being strong enough to be subjected to intensive use by different people.
- the rehabilitation device advantageously incorporates a transmission unit capable of making the transmission point of the connection member associated to the contrast force contrasting the movement of the joints subjected to the exercise, to continuously take a variety of positions, which allow the user to carry out a large number of correspondents different exercises.
- the transmission point can advantageously take a variety of positions along a path lying on a plane substantially perpendicular to the support plane onto which the user places his/her own arm, thereby causing the possibility of carrying out exercises according to a variety of different directions.
- a further advantage of the invention results from the provision of replaceable modules equipped with helical springs to adjust the intensity of the force contrasting the movement of joints and muscles involved in the exercise.
- a non-last advantage of the invention results from the provision of a monolithic frame, which defines the support base, the support plane and the fixed part of the contrast member and to which the guide for the support element and the fixed part of the transmission member are associated.
- FIG. 1 is a side view of the rehabilitation device according to the invention.
- Figure 2 is a side view of the device of Figure 1 schematically showing the forearm, wrist and hand of the user ;
- Figure 3 is a top view of the device of Figure 1 schematically showing the forearm, wrist and hand of the user ;
- FIG. 4 is a section along line IV-IV of Figure 1 ;
- FIG. 5 is a transparent perspective view of the contrast unit
- FIG. 6 is a perspective view of one of the replaceable modules .
- the rehabilitation device has been denoted as a whole with reference numeral 11.
- the device 11 comprises a frame 13 to which a support plane 15, a support element 17, a transmission unit 19 and a contrast unit 21 are associated.
- the support plane 15, the support element 17, the transmission unit 19 and contrast unit 21 are arranged with respect to the longitudinal axis "T" of the frame 13 in this same order, from the back end 13a towards the front end 13b of the frame 13.
- the support plane 15 defines a corresponding support surface 15a, which can preferably be coated with a non-slip material, onto which the user of the device can rest his/her own forearm AV or at least part of it, and the corresponding wrist PL.
- the device 11 When used, the device 11 is preferably positioned so that the surface 15a of the support plane 15 is substantially horizontal with respect to the ground and facing up.
- the support element 17 is provided to support the palm of the hand MN of the user and extends forward rising perpendicularly with respect to the support plane 15, so that when the user rests his/her forearm and wrist on the surface of the support plane 15, so that the palm of hand the faces said surface 15a, i.e. downwards in Figure 2, the hand MN of the user can in turn rest against the support element 17.
- the device 11 also comprises an engagement element 23 for one or more fingers of the hand associated to a force contrasting the displacement along at least one direction in space .
- the engagement element 23 is associated to said contrast force through a connection member 33, such as a rope, tape, twine, cord, or the like.
- the transmission unit 19 is capable of causing a change of the direction along which said contrast force acts with respect to the engagement element 23.
- the transmission unit 19 comprises a fixed part 25 and a moving part 27, the latter capable of rotating with respect to the fixed part so as to displace the transmission point of the connection member 33 in space.
- the moving part 27 is capable of rotating around an axis "L” substantially parallel and coplanar with respect to the longitudinal axis "T" along which the support plane 15 develops, or slightly inclined towards the front end 13b of the frame, for example of about 15°, as shown in the example.
- the moving part 27 and consequently the transmission point of the connection member 33 is capable of rotating with respect to the fixed part 25 of at least 180° and according to an even more preferred embodiment, said rotation angle is at least of 360° .
- the rotating part 27 of the transmission unit causes a shift of the transmission point of the connection member along a path, preferably an arc of a circle path, which develops in a plane perpendicular to the axis "L” and therefore substantially perpendicular to the axis "T” or anyhow in a plane perpendicular to an axis coplanar with the axis "T” .
- Said path which in the preferred embodiment of the invention is at least a semi-circumference or even more preferably is a circumference of such a magnitude to surround an imaginary forward extension of the support plane 15.
- the transmission unit 19 is furthermore associated to the frame 13 so as to be able to slide with its fixed part 25 along a direction parallel to the axis "T" in the opposite directions denoted by arrows "F". In this way the transmission unit 19 can be positioned at the correct distance from the support element 17.
- the fixed part 25 comprises a cradle 29 having an arc of a circle shape and the moving part 27 comprises a support ring 31 housed in the cradle 29 so as to be able to rotate with respect to it.
- the connection member 33 comprises a steel rope 35.
- the diameter of the ring 31 is about twice the width of the support plane 15 and anyhow such as to surround an imaginary forward extension of the support plane 15. If, for example, the support plane 15 has a width of 12 cm, the diameter of the support ring 31 will be at least of about 24 cm.
- the ring 31 is preferably rigid and can be made, for example, of metal or plastic.
- the cradle 29 furthermore extends around the ring 31 for an arc of circle of approximately 180°.
- the ring 31 is provided with an opening 37 for the passage of the connection member 33, i.e. for example the passage of the rope 35.
- This opening 37 is integral with the ring 31 so that they can rotate together with respect to the cradle 29 and said opening defines the transmission point of the connection member 33. It is clear that said transmission point could also be defined by other means such as for example a pulley fastened to the ring 31.
- the rotation of the opening 37 is generated, and consequently of the transmission point of the connection member 33, with respect to the cradle 29 of a circular arc preferably of at least 180° and even more preferably of 360°.
- the ring 31 can for example be made of metal or plastic.
- the engagement element 23 comprises an engagement ring 39 able to house at least one finger of the hand and possibly four fingers or all the fingers.
- the engagement element 23 can comprise, for example, a thimble or a band.
- the contrast unit 21 comprises a fixed portion 41 to which the connection member
- each of said modules 43 is provided for generating a contrast force of different intensity.
- Said modules 43 can in fact be individually associated to the fixed part 41 to determine a specific resistance, which opposes with a different force to the extension of the connection member 33 with respect to the unit 21.
- the contrast force is generated by a helical spring 45 housed within the module 43 and it is transmitted by the module to the fixed part 41 of the contrast unit 21 through a pair of wheels 47a, 47b cooperating with each other.
- a first wheel 47a is placed in the fixed part 41 and a second wheel 47b is housed in the moving part.
- the helical spring 45 is associated to the wheel 41b of module 43 and it is preferably inserted inside the wheel with one end fastened to the wheel hub and the opposite end fastened to the inner surface of the wheel.
- the connection member 33 such as a rope 35, or the like, is associated to wheel 47a in the fixed part.
- the rope 35 either is wrapped around the hub of wheel 47a or is wrapped in a circumferential groove of wheel 47a. This rope 33 exits from the fixed part 41 through a hole 49.
- the invention is thus possible to equip the device 11 with a plurality or kits of said modules 43 having helical elastic springs of gradually increasing force, to meet the progress of a patient undergoing a rehabilitating or improving therapy.
- the replaceable modules 43 and the fixed part 41 of the contrast unit are also equipped with mutual engagement elements 51a, 51b allowing the reversible attachment of the module 43 with respect to the fixed part 41.
- Said elements 51a, 51b can be, for example, teeth 51a and corresponding seats 51b into which the teeth engage by snapping-in.
- the teeth 51a and the seats 51b are provided in the fixed part 41 and in the replaceable modules 43, respectively.
- an opposite arrangement can be provided, in which the teeth 51a are provided in the modules 43 and the seats 51b in the fixed part 41.
- the support element 17 for the palm of the hand comprises a fixed guide 53 associated to the frame 13 of the device, a rod 55 sliding with respect to the fixed guide 53 and a cross handgrip 57.
- the sliding of rod 55 with respect to guide 53 causes the variation of the distance of the handle 57 from the support plane 15.
- the frame 13 has an elongated substantially "C" form in which, in addition to the support plane 15, a support base 59 which develops parallel to plane 15 and which allows to place the device on a horizontal support surface is defined.
- a fitting portion 61 connects the rear the support plane 15 to the support base 59.
- the frame 13 is a monolithic frame defining in a single piece, for example obtained by moulding of plastic material, the support base 59, the support plane 15 and the fixed part 41 of the contrast unit 21 and to which the fixed part 25 of the transmission unit 19 and the guide 53 for the support element 17 are associated.
- the guide 53 is preferably placed between said support base 59 and the support plane 15 and closes the frame "C" 13 at the front.
- the support base 59 of frame 13 extends also forward beyond the support plane 15 and defines a support portion to which with the transmission unit 19 and the contrast unit 21 are associated.
- the rehabilitation device as described and illustrated is open to several variants and modifications, falling within the same inventive principle.
