Description
A DEVICE FOR FLUIDIFYING AND/OR ACCELERATING A FLOW OF
LOOSE MATERIAL IN THE FORM OF FIBRES, STRANDS AND/OR
SHAVINGS .
DESCRIPTION.
The invention relates to a device for fluidifying and/or accelerating a flow of loose material in the form of fibres, strands or shavings.
Specifically, though not exclusively, it is usefully applied in machines and plants normally used for adding glue to a flow of loose material for example a flow of loose wood material destined for subsequent production of panels. In more detail, the present invention is applicable for preparation for gluing the loose material, such as MDF fibre, particle board and OSB wood strands.
Devices are known which use mechanical means for preparing MDF wood fibre to be subjected to gluing using rotating rollers provided with nails or slim projecting pins which interact with the material to drag it and in some way force it into chambers in which the interaction between the moving nails, the wall of the roller and the external surface of the chamber in which the nails operate takes place .
The main aim of this action is to perform a mechanical action with which the loose material, which is usually not very homogeneous as it is made up, according to the type of material, by flocks or lumps etc., is unravelled and thus
to make the "fluidified" material enter a successive part of the plant such as to be better coated by the glue.
In some known applications which use techniques such as the one described above, the mechanical action is added-to by a considerable flow of air in order to improve and accelerate the mechanical action and to generate a flow of loose material which is suitable for the gluing operation.
The prior art exhibits the above-illustrated limitation of having to add a considerable flow of air to the mechanical action exerted by the rollers, as well as having the operative and structural drawback of operating the mechanical action internally of chambers in which the interaction between the moving nails, the wall of the roller and the external surface of the chamber is necessarily conditioned by the characteristics of the material being processed.
Wood fibre is a material which once the flocks have been untangled tends to open and separate, and the flow can be accelerated in a predetermined direction. This is even truer for wooden material in the form of shavings or strands for which, once any lumps have been dissolved, an accelerated flow can be created which is distinguished by a predetermined transversal dimension to the rotation axes of the rollers.
The aim of the present invention is to obviate the limitations in the prior art by providing a device for fluidifying and/or accelerating a flow of loose material in the form of fibres, strands and/or shavings which improves
the generation of flow of material to be subjected to gluing and which at the same time exhibits great versatility of use, as it can be used, with small adjustments, for processing loose materials that are very different from one another. The constructional form of the device is variable according to the material used and the physical and dimensional characteristics thereof.
The above aims and more besides are attained by means of a device for fluidifying and/or accelerating a flow of loose materials (2) in the form of fibres, strands and/or shavings, characterised in that it comprises at least two counter-rotating rollers (1) which are reciprocally flanked and parallel; the rollers (1) being destined to receive the materials at an inlet zone located upstream thereof with reference to an advancement direction as defined between the rollers at facing surfaces thereof, and to expel the materials by conveying them from an outlet zone downstream of the rollers (1), again with reference to the advancement direction as defined between the rollers (1) at facing surfaces thereof, with an accelerated flow which is distinguished at least by a predetermined transversal dimension to the axis of the rollers. This outlet zone "downstream" of the rollers (1) is constituted by a hopper, the walls of which are adjustable such as to obtain a curtain of material the transversal dimension of which is adj ustable .
The flow of material is, as a consequence of the action of the described device, accelerated in the tangential direction to the rollers.
Other advantages of a general nature of the present invention will more fully emerge during the course of the detailed description that follows of some preferred though not exclusive embodiments of the invention, illustrated purely by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying figures of the drawings, in which:
- figure 1 is a schematic section relating to a first embodiment ;
figure 2 is a schematic section relating to a second embodiment .
With reference to the above mentioned figures, 1 denotes in their entirety two counter-rotating rollers, reciprocally flanked and parallel, which constitute the fundamental part of a device according to the invention which is predisposed to realise an accelerated flow of loose materials 2 in the form of fibres, strands and/or shavings, with which the device is continuously supplied.
The rollers 1 are located in a plant or machine specially conceived and structured for adding glue to a mass of loose material, in particular, for example, loose material such as MDF fibre or loose wood material such as TRC shavings (particle board) or strands of OSB wood.
In particular, the two rollers 1 are set up such as to receive the loose materials at an inlet zone located upstream of the counter-rotating rollers 1 (with reference
to the direction, indicated by the arrow 6, of the motion in the same direction that ensues at the position of the reciprocally facing parts of the rollers themselves) , from a supply device 4 which, in the simplest version, can be constituted by a simple hopper.
At the common superiorly-located part and by a combined effect of the respective counter-rotating directions, the rollers 1 capture the loose material supplied thereto by the supply device 4 and, after having interacted with the loose material, expel it in a downwards direction and convey it to an outlet zone downstream of the rollers 1 (again with reference to the direction of motion which ensues at the reciprocally-facing parts of the rollers according to the direction indicated by the arrow 6) , with an accelerated flow distinguished by a predetermined transversal dimension (transversal to the rotation axes of the rollers) . This transversal dimension is mostly determined by the reciprocal distance between the rollers 1.
The action of rollers on the loose material originates from the fact that the rollers exhibit their external cylindrical surfaces provided with a plurality of projecting elements 3 which are substantially radially arranged and distributed almost uniformly on the external cylindrical surfaces of the rollers. According to the type of loose material to be treated, the projecting elements exhibit different characteristics. Thus, for example, the projecting elements can be constituted by metal pins, more
or less pointed and having various diameters, or by very flexible elements such as bristles or the like.
A function of the action exerted by the projecting elements by effect of the counter-rotating action of the cylinders 1 is to unravel the loose material in arrival from the supply device 4. It is crucial that the material arrives at the following gluing operation without exhibiting flocks/lumps and with the greatest possible uniformity of distribution and dispersion in its mass.
A function of the action exerted by the projecting elements by effect of the counter-rotating action of the cylinders 1 is to accelerate the loose material in arrival from the supply device 4, and to expel it in a flow having a tangential direction to the rollers, where the motion of the material depends on the geometrical and physical characteristics of the material itself. For example, due to their elongate and slim shape, by effect of the force applied thereon by the rollers, the strands of OSB wood material take on a rotating motion, known as spin, about their own axis. In this movement they rotate several times upon themselves so that during the following gluing stage a better distribution of the glue is obtained on the surfaces thereof .
A further important action exerted by the device of the invention is that it gives rise to a calibrated flow of the material which is quite slim such as to facilitate to a maximum the subsequent spraying of glue, performed for example by means of spraying nozzles 10.
To attain this aim, the two rollers 1 are arranged with parallel and horizontal axes.
Preferably, though not necessarily, they have the same dimensions .
In many circumstances it is advantageous that the two rollers 1 be given different peripheral velocities, as well as opposite direction, as specified herein above.
As well as the supply device 4, in the outlet zone downstream of the rollers 1, where the treated material passes, a manifold element 5 is preferably provided, having predetermined dimensional characteristics such as to collect the accelerated flow of the materials expelled by the rollers.
Further, the downwards fall of the material can be accelerated by the presence of a zone placed under depression .
In any case the actions of the above-described device are typically realised by the mechanical action of the two counter-rotating rollers on the loose material under treatment.
The characteristics and dimensions of a calibrated flow of the material, having a rather slim thickness, and the acceleration and the unravelling process thereof are realised by the combined action of the two rollers, and exclusively between them.
The regulating and setting up of the device, once the type of projecting elements has been chosen according to the material (MDF fibres, TRC shavings - particle board - or
OSB strands) to be treated, together with the relative velocities of the rollers, are extremely simple; all that is needed is the simple calculating and setting of the distance between the rollers. Among other things, this simple adjustment method means that the best adjustment for the performing of the process can be easily arrived-at. Figure 2 schematically illustrates a second embodiment of the invention in which the actions performed by the device are obtained with only one of the rollers 1 being provided with the described sharp elements, while the other is constituted by a simple roller (for example the drawing roller located at the end of a conveyor belt (on which the belt partially winds) which supplies the material.
