Abstract

An oil based drilling fluid comprising vinylidene compounds is described. A process for preparing an oil based drilling fluid comprising: dimerizing one or more even numbered alpha olefins to produce one or more vinylidenes; and combining the vinylidene with additional components to improve its performance as a drilling fluid; and a method of improving the performance of an oil drilling operation comprising applying a drilling fluid comprising at most 90% of a vinylidene component are also described.
