Device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system, such as a drain or vent, a waterproofing system comprising such a device and methods for forming a device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system and forming a
waterproofing system
The invention relates to a device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system. The waterproofing system can be a roof, a swimming pool or another outdoor
application using a membrane to form a barrier for water. Specifically, the device can be a roof mountable device, such as a drain or vent. The invention further relates to waterproofing system, in particular a roof, having such a device. The invention also relates to a method of forming a device arranged to be mountable in a waterproofing system, such as a roof.
A waterproofing system according to this application is any system that at least partially protects an object from water. The object is preferably an immovable object such as a house, but can also be ground. Particularly the invention relates to waterproofing systems such as roof systems, swimming pool systems and ponds.
The waterproofing system according to this application uses one or more membranes to obtain the waterproofing properties/preventing the passage of water. The membrane comprises or is formed from a waterproofing material. One or more layers of membranes can be used. Several materials are available as membrane such as bitumen, silicate, PVC, EPDM. The membranes can be fixed to the building structure or to a carrier for forming the waterproofing system. Common
examples of membranes used in roofing systems are bituminous membranes such as tar paper and roofing felt.
The membranes can comprise a base (paper, polyester) allowing e.g. rolling of the membranes. The membrane can be formed by a mat element. The membrane or mat can be placed on the outer structure or carrier.
Waterproofing systems can comprise a drain or a vent that allows water or air to traverse a border or membrane of the waterproofing system. The drain or vent can comprise a base element, such as an erect tube or a pipe. Specifically in any of the embodiments of the invention the base element can be an erect base element or a hollow base element.
The pipe allows water to traverse the waterproofing system. In most prior art arrangements the membrane is attached to the drain or vent. The membrane should be attached in a waterproof manner to the device in order to keep the waterproof ng properties.
In any of the embodiment of the invention the base element can formed from a plastic such as PVC or PEr but (stainless) steal or aluminium are also materials that can be used.
Specifically for roofing systems, bituminous mats are used. Attaching the mats to a roof mountable device is time consuming. In some applications heaters are used, creating fire hazards. In some application lead pieces are used to make the waterproof connection between the device, usually a pipe, and the rest of the roof/membrane .
It is goal to provide an improved device for a
waterproofing system, such as a drain or a vent. In an embodiment the improvement relates to a better waterproof connection of the membrane to the device arranged to be mounted to the waterproof system.
In an embodiment a device is provided arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system, such as a vent or a pipe. In an embodiment the device is a roof mountable device. In
an embodiment the device comprises a base element, such as pipe. The device further comprises a bush. In an embodiment the device further comprises a membrane element formed from a waterproofing material. The membrane element, part of the device, can be connected to the membrane of the
waterproofing system. The waterproofing connection can be made between the membrane of the device and the membrane of the rest of the waterproofing system. In an embodiment the membrane is formed by a mat element.
In an embodiment the membrane element is sandwiched between the base element and the bush. The sandwich
arrangement allows a waterproofing connection with the base element. The bush provides an engaging force for fixing the membrane to the base element. The bush and base element wor together to fix the position of the membrane. The membrane can extend from the device and can be fixed to the membrane of the waterproofing system. The sandwich arrangement provides, at least partially, parallel surface areas of the three different elements.
By providing a device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system having a membrane element, a device is provided that can be easily connected to a waterproofing system. The membrane elements of the device and
waterproofing systems can be connected to each other by suitable means for obtaining a waterproofing sealing.
Connecting two membranes with each other is easier.
In any of the embodiments the sandwich arrangement can be oriented along a surface of the base element. In any of the embodiments the sandwich arrangement extends generally along an axis of the device. In use this will mostly be a vertical direction.
Further the membrane material, in any of the
embodiments, can extend radially from the sandwich
arrangement. This radial extension allows the easier mounting, connecting and waterproofing of the device with the rest of the membrane/system.
In an embodiment the membrane extends at least a few centimetres and preferably at least 25 cm from the base element/bush. If the membrane element extends at least 25 cm, this will allow connecting the device membrane element to a membrane element of the waterproofing system at a distance from the base element/bush, e.g. using heating techniques, such as a dryer. It allows to prevent heating lead to make the waterproofing connection with the standing element .
Other connection methods for connecting the device membrane element to a membrane element of a waterproofing system can use screws, specifically self tapping screws.
In an embodiment the sandwich arrangement of membrane between base element and bush is formed by heat shrinking. By heat shrinking either the bush or base element, that element is positioned around the other and the membrane is sandwiched between the two.
In an embodiment the bush or the base element is expanded to position and fix the membrane between the expanded element and the other element.
In an embodiment the sandwich arrangement is formed around a circumference, preferably the complete
circumference of the bush. This will allow a fixed,
waterproofing connection, between two large surfaces areas of bush and base element with the membrane material in between. Such a large surface area improves the
waterproofing properties.
In an embodiment the device comprises at least one corrugation for holding the membrane element sandwiched between the base element and bush. In any of the embodiments
the corrugation can be formed in the sandwich arrangement of bush and base element with the membrane element in between. The corrugation will form a deformation that will provide an extra holding force and waterproofing connection between membrane and the bush and base element respectively.
In an embodiment the corrugation provides all or most of the engaging force between bush and base element. It is possible to provide a bush and base element of different circumference, not tight fitting, and providing the membrane in between. The sandwich structure in which the three elements are held together is obtained only after providing the corrugation over a part of the sandwich structure. The corrugation will provide a fixation in an axial direction of the base element.
In an embodiment the corrugation is formed around a circumference of the bush. This allows a 360 degrees
engagement of the membrane between the bush and base
element. Further such a corrugation can be formed using roll forming in a method using suitably shaped rolls.
In an embodiment the membrane element comprises a bituminous mat. This material is wide spread used in roofing systems and a device comprising the bituminous mat can be mounted on the roof saving time.
In an embodiment multiple corrugations are provided. This provides even more fixation. In an embodiment
corrugations of different forms, such as waves or saw teeth, can be provided.
In an embodiment the bush comprises a collar.
Preferably the bush protrudes at one end from the base element and the collar is provided at the protruding end. In an embodiment the collar can be used for connection the device/bush to part{s) of the rest of the waterproofing system or to other frame parts.
In an embodiment the bush forms an inner part of the sandwich arrangement. The bush lies inside the mat element and inside the base element.
Preferably the collar extends in a radial direction. This will also allow to guide and support the membrane in the outward direction if the bush form the inner part of the sandwich arrangement.
According to a further aspect a waterproofing system is provided. The waterproofing system comprises the device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system according to any of the embodiments described in this application. The device functions as a drain or vent. The invention allows an improvement for draining flat roofs, terraces or other flat buildings, but also for venting. Further pools and ponds can be drained using the device. According to the invention the waterproofing connection between the device and other parts, specifically the membrane, of the waterproofing system can be obtained more quickly, saving time.
In an embodiment the waterproofing system is a roof having a membrane of formed by a roof material such as a bitumen mat. The device also comprises a bitumen mat. Both can be connected providing a waterproofing connection. A bitumen mat comprises a flexible base, such as a paper of polyester and can be processed to be fitted in the sandwich arrangement without losing its waterproofing properties.
According to a further aspect a method of fixing a membrane element of a waterproofing system to a device arranged to be mounted in the waterproofing system is provided. The device can be drain or vent or another
application allowing traversing the membrane. According to an embodiment the method comprises providing the membrane element, providing a bush, sandwiching the membrane element between the bush and a base element of the device by roll
forming. Roll forming is performed by providing a set of rolls or stands, each performing an incremental part of the bend. One of the rolls will engage the bush, another will engage the base element. The rolls will allow bringing the bush and base element together, allowing to fix the membrane in between. The method allows a waterproofing connection. The rolls can exert pressure over a large surface and that surface can be used for fixing the membrane.
In an embodiment the plate material is provided for forming the base element and the plate material is roll formed to form the base element of device arranged to be mounted in the waterproofing system. The roll forming is used according to the embodiment not only for making the fixation but also for forming the base element from a plate material.
In an embodiment roll forming further comprises corrugating the membrane, base element and bush. A
corrugation will be formed that provides further fixation and waterproofing qualities.
In an embodiment the method further comprises forming a cavity in the membrane element, such as by stamping, and positioning the bush in the formed cavity. In an embodiment the cavity is smaller (20% or more} then the bush.
Positioning the bush in the cavity will already invoke an engaging force of the membrane onto the bush. In an
embodiment a mould is used to press the bush in the cavity.
According to a further aspect a method is provided for connecting a device arranged to be mounted in a
waterproofing system to a waterproofing system. According to the method a device arranged to be mounted in a
waterproofing system according to any of the disclosed embodiments is provided, said device having a membrane element sandwiched between a bush and a base element. The
membrane element extends from the device and according to the method the extending membrane element is fixed to a membrane element of the waterproofing system. A connection between two membrane elements is time saving in respect of connecting a base element or another device to membranes of the waterproofing system. Different techniques can be used to make the connection, such as heating, but also self tapping screws can be used.
In any of the embodiments of the device, waterproofing systems and/or in the methods the bush can be an aluminium bush. In any of the embodiments of the device, waterproofing systems and/or in the methods the base element can comprise a metal or plastic sheet material. The membrane element in this embodiments extends radially from the device 1 and has a rectangular shape.
Other shapes are possible.
Examples of a membrane element for a waterproofing systems, specifically a roof material, are bituminous sheets. Another example is a roof material formed from EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene Monomer (M-class) rubber) , a type of synthetic rubber. EPDM is an elastomer which is characterized by wide range of applications. EPDM is used as a covering to waterproof roofs. It has the benefit that it does not pollute the runoff rainwater, which is of vital importance if the house owner wishes to use this water for personal sanitation/hygiene. Several houses equipped with rainwater harvesting thus make use of this type of roofing. EPDM can also be used as playground or pool deck surfacing.
A further example of a suitable membrane, specifically as roof material, is TPO. Thermoplastic PolyOlefin (TPO) refers to polymer/filler blends usually consisting of some fraction of PP (polypropylene) , PE (polyethylene) , BCPP (block copolymer polypropylene) , rubber, and a reinforcing filler. Common fillers include, though are not restricted to talc, fiberglass, carbon fiber, wollastonite, and MOS (Metal Oxy Sulfate) . Common rubbers include EPR (ethylene-propylene rubber), EPDM {EP-diene rubber), EO (ethylene-octene) , EB
(ethylene-butadiene) , SEBS { Styrene-ethylene-butadiene- styrene) , Currently there is a great variety of commercially available rubbers and BCPP's. They are produced using regioselective and stereoselective catalysts known as metallocenes . The metallocene catalyst becomes embedded in the polymer and cannot be recovered. TPO is frequently found in outdoor applications. Any of the materials can be used in combination with any of the embodiments.
Other examples of membrane elements that can be used in combination with this invention are plastic sheets.
Preferably the membrane element 5 comprises a flexible sheet material that is water impermeable. Preferably a heating method can be used to fix the membrane/mat element 5 to typical roof material such a bituminous sheets.

Device 20 also comprises a bush 21 extending more from the base element 22 then in the first embodiment. Between the base element 22 and bush 21 a membrane 23 is received. Over a large surface the membrane is sandwiched between the bush 21 and base element 22. This large area of contact 24 or sandwich arrangement 24 is corrugated to further provide a waterproofing connection.
The membrane material 23 can be any of the described materials. It extends in a radial direction and can be connected with membrane material of the waterproofing system in which the device 20 is mounted.
Bush 21 extends a distance 25 from the end of the base element. As such it can function as an overflow it the device 20 is mounted in a roof. The top end 26 is mounted at the level of the (flat) roof and the overflow/bush 21 will extend upwards from the roof.
In an embodiment an angled bush can be used. This will allow using a roof mountable device on an angled roof. A possible embodiment is shown in Figures 6 and 7.
A base element 31 is part of a device 30 mountable in a waterproofing system such as an angled roof. Collar 35 of bush 32 is formed to extend at an angle with respect to the base element. The corrugation is formed at an angle.
In another embodiment, device 33 has an angled bush
36/collar 37 and an angled base element 34. The corrugation is formed parallel to horizon.
Figure 8 shows an embodiment of a device 60 arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system 61, here a roof. Device 60 is, in this embodiment, a vent allowing air to traverse the membrane 62 of the waterproofing system. Membrane 63 is sandwiched between bush 64 and base element 65 of the device. The sandwich arrangement is provided with
corrugation 66 formed using roll forming for forming a waterproofing connection and fixing the membrane 63.
In any of the embodiments, not shown, membrane 63 can have multiple layers, e.g. multiple mat elements of
bituminous felts.
As shown in Figure 4, but as a skilled person would understand, applicable in any of the embodiments, the membrane 63 of the device 61 and the membrane 62 of the waterproofing system 61 are connected. In the shown
embodiment a heating process was used to form the connection 68. Further a self tapping screw 67 was used to make the waterproofing connection.
In an embodiment membrane 63 is positioned on top of the membrane 62. In another embodiment membrane 62 is on top and is brought in contact and possibly additionally
connected to the base element 65. Such an additional
connection further improves the device according to the invention, but is not necessary.
Collar 69 is used to connect, in a known manner, the vent 60 to a frame part 59, e.g. wood, of the roof 61. Other
connections are also possible. The invention is not limited to a collar/frame connection.
Figure 9 schematically shows an embodiment of a roll forming apparatus 80 that allows roll forming and
corrugating the device 81 into a device 81 arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system.
In an embodiment a plate material 82 is used as a starting material for the base element.
The apparatus 80 comprises a frame 84 to which inner roll 85 and outer roll 86 are connected. The rolls can rotated around axis 87,88. A suitable drive 89 is used to control the speed of rotation of one or both rolls 85,86. The drive 89 can comprise a transmission. A skilled person is well aware of arrangements allowing roll forming.
A membrane element 91 having a cavity, e.g. formed using stamping, is provided.
The membrane 91 is positioned over the bush with the bush 90 in the cavity 100. An embodiment of a method step to position the bush in the cavity is shown in Figure 10. Fig. 10 shows a step according to any of the embodiments of the method of the invention.
Membrane 91 has a cavity 100.
Bush 90 has a diameter 92. Cavity 100 has a diameter 93. In a preferred embodiment the diameter 93 is at least 15% smaller than the diameter 92. This will result in pretension between bush 90 and membrane element 91, when bush 90 is received in cavity 91.
In the embodiment according to Figure 10, bush 90 is positioned over a mandrel 94 having a generally similar diameter. Membrane 91 is pushed 97 over the mandrel 94 using e.g. a press 96 shown schematically. The membrane around the cavity 100 will expand and stretch and will surround the
axial side 98 of the bush. Part of the membrane 91 will extend along the axial side 98.
Back to Fig. 9, bush 90, e.g. an aluminium bush, is positioned next to the inner roll 85 carrying the membrane 91. Closer tip the outer roll 86 a plate 82 is positioned. If the rolls 85,86 are brought together using a press 99, a corrugation will be formed due to the complementary shape of the inner and outer roll 85,86. The corrugation is formed on the area where the membrane 91 is sandwiched between bush 90 and plate 82.
The roll forming can be repeated multiple times in order to bend plate 82 to obtain a pipe.
In another embodiment base element 82 is already provided in the form of a pipe element and the roll forming is only used to form the corrugation.
Of course many other configurations are possible to form a device arranged to be mounted in a waterproofing system .
