Definitions
- This invention relates to electronic transactions, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a method of authorising a transaction.
- Point of sale transactions around the world have been progressively moving away from cash and cheque transactions to electronic transactions.
- Various forms of electronic transactions are known, including debit and credit card transactions and electronic fund transfers (EFT's).
- Debit card transactions are generally authorised by a purchaser entering their personal identification number (PIN) into a card reader at a point of sale, whereafter the transaction is authorised if the purchaser has enough available funds in and account associated with the debit card.
- PIN personal identification number
- Cards transactions are generally not completed by a purchaser entering a PIN.
- the purchaser merely presents a card which is swiped through a card reader, and the transaction is authorised if the purchase falls within the credit limit allocated to the purchaser by their credit provider.
- Credit cards are also a relatively simple and therefore preferred payment method for purchasing goods over the internet or telephone. For these transactions, purchasers merely need to provide the numbers appearing on their credit card, whereafter a transaction is approved or disapproved, again subject to the purchaser's available credit.
- EFT's have developed into a preferred payment method for internet transactions, but is not a practical option for point of sale transactions. EFT's are usually done from a user's home. A computer device, internet connection and EFT facility is all that is needed. Most EFT facilities require a user to enter a PIN to access their banking profile or account(s), and a further verification and authorisation number is required in some instances to authorise a transaction. Once a user intends to make an EFT, their bank would generally send a temporary verification code to the user's mobile device via a short message system (SMS), which code, upon entering into the EFT facility, then authorises the bank to transfer funds to the desired.
- SMS short message system
- United States patent application no US2010/133335A1 discloses a mobile telephony device (MTD) embedded with a radio frequency identifier (RFID) which is capable of communicating with a receiver at point of sale. Once a card is presented into a card reader, the RFID which is embedded in the MTD communicates with the receiver at the point of sale and authorises the transaction.
- MTD mobile telephony device
- RFID radio frequency identifier
- a disadvantage associated with this disclosure is that no further identification or authorisation is required. Once a card is presented and a signal received from the RFID embedded in the MTD, a transaction is authorised, which is still problematic as a person's card and MTD may be stolen and used fraudulently before the person is able to deactivate the card or the MTD.
- a further disadvantage is that it has no application in EFT's, as there is no proximal point of sale or receiver for communicating with the RFID embedded in the MTD.
- a method of verifying an electronic transaction at a point of sale including the step of receiving a message from a purchaser via a wireless telephony network, the message including a code to authorise the transaction.
- the message may an unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) message, and the code may be a personal identification number (PIN).
- USSD unstructured supplementary service data
- PIN personal identification number
- a method of authorising an electronic transaction at a point of sale including the steps of: providing a bank card at the point of sale so that information relating to the card and information relating to the transaction can be transmitted to a bank; and
- the bank may transmit a message to a purchaser to request authorisation for the transaction.
- the bank may authorise the transaction after receiving the code to authorise the transaction from the purchaser.
- a method of verifying a transaction at a point of sale including the steps of:
- a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a method of securing an electronic transaction, including the steps of:
- a purchaser may be alerted of a discrepancy between the first and second geographical locations.
- the transaction may be disallowed if the geographical locations differ from each other.
- the purchaser may be alerted of the geographical discrepancy and a second authorisation code may be requested, and the transaction may be authorised once the second authorisation code is received.
- a method for authorising a transaction is generally designated by reference numeral 1.
- the method comprises a purchaser 5 presenting a card 6 for payment for a transaction at a point of sale 2.
- An attendant at a point of sale introduces card 6 into card reader 3, whereafter card reader 3 transmits details of the card and details in respect of the transaction to bank 4 where purchaser 5 has an account or credit facility.
- Bank 4 then transmits a prompt or authorisation request by way of a first unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) message to purchaser's cellular phone 7 via wireless GSM telephony network 8.
- USSD unstructured supplementary service data
- purchaser 5 re-transmits a personal identification number (PIN) by way of a second USSD message via wireless telephony network 8 to bank 4 to authorise the transaction.
- PIN personal identification number
- Bank 4 then transmits authorisation for the transaction to card reader 3 which prints out a slip containing details of the transaction, which slip is signed by purchaser 5 in accordance with known practice for dealing with and authorising card transactions.
- the current invention has the advantage over the prior art that it provides a further safety mechanism for securing a card transaction by providing a purchaser the opportunity to authorise a transaction by transmitting an authorisation code or PIN to their bank to authorise a transaction.
- the method according to the invention is also compatible with electronic fund transfers (EFT's).
- EFT's electronic fund transfers
- the invention also has the further advantage over the prior art in that a bank could verify the geographical location of the point of sale where the purchaser's card is presented, as well as the geographical location of the purchaser's cellular telephone. The bank can then compare the locations, and if there is a discrepancy in the locations, or if the USSD message or PIN is transmitted from a location which does not correlate with the purchaser's primary residence or place of employment as provided to the bank by the purchaser, the bank could either alert the purchaser of such discrepancy, or the bank could disallow the transaction in the event of the bank suspecting that a person other than the purchaser or their authorised representative provided and transmitted the USSD authorisation message containing the purchaser's PIN to the bank.
