Abstract

본 발명은 위상차 필름의 제조방법에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 투명기재의 한 면에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하되, 상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률 및 제1 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 두께 등을 최적화함으로써, 실질적 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 단일층의 위상차 필름과 동일한 광학특성을 균일하게 구현할 수 있고, 상기 위상차 필름이 적용된 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 측면의 명암 대비비가 개선되며 색변이(Color Shift)가 최소화되어 선명한 화상 구현이 가능한 위상차 필름의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.

Description

위상차 필름의 제조방법
본 발명은 균일한 nx>nz>ny의 굴절률을 갖는 위상차 필름의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
액정표시장치(liquid crystal display; LCD)는 대중적인 화상표시장치로 널리 사용되고 있다.
이러한 액정표시장치는 액정의 초기배열, 전극구조 및 액정의 물성에 따라 모드가 나누어지며 현재 가장 많이 쓰이고 있는 액정표시장치의 모드는 트위스트네마틱(TN), 수직배향(VA), 면상스위칭(IPS)이 있다. 또한 전압 무인가 시 빛의 투과 여부에 따라 노멀블랙 또는 노멀화이트 모드로 나누어 지며, 도메인 및 액정 초기배열 등에 따라 VA모드는 PVA(Patterned VA), SPVA(Super PVA) 및 MVA(multidomain VA)로, IPS는 S-IPS 또는 FFS 등으로 분류된다.
이 중 면상스위칭 모드(이하, IPS 모드라 함)는 액정분자가 비구동 상태에서 기판 면에 거의 수평하고 균일한 배열을 갖는다. 따라서 정면에서 하판의 투과축과 액정분자의 진상축(Fast axis)의 방향이 일치할 때 액정의 광학특성에 의해 사면에서도 투과축과 액정의 진상축이 일치하므로 하판 편광판을 통과한 빛이 액정을 통과해도 편광상태의 변화를 일으키지 않아 본래의 상태대로 액정층을 통과할 수 있다. 그 결과 기판 상부면과 하부면상의 편광판들의 배열에 의해 비구동 상태에서 어느 정도의 암상태를 표시할 수 있는 것이다. 이러한 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 일반적으로 광학필름을 사용하지 않고서도 넓은 시야각을 얻을 수 있어 자연스러운 투과율이 보장되고 화질 및 시야각이 화면 전체에 균일한 장점을 갖는다. 따라서 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 비교적 대형의 고급 기종에서 주종으로 사용되고 있다.
종래 IPS 모드를 적용한 액정표시장치는 액정이 포함되어 있는 액정셀의 외측에는 빛을 편광시키기 위한 편광판이 요구되고, 상기 편광판의 일면 또는 양면에는 트리아세테이트셀룰로오스(TAC, Triacetate Cellulose) 필름으로 이루어진 보호필름이 편광자(PVA)를 보호하기 위하여 구비된다. 이의 경우 액정이 암(Black) 상태를 표현할 때 하판에 구비된 편광자에 의해 편광된 빛이 정면이 아닌 경사면에서 트리아세테이트 셀룰로오스에 의해 타원편광되고, 상기 타원편광된 빛은 액정셀에서 편광이 증폭되어 빛샘과 동시에 빛이 다양한 색을 가지게 되는 문제가 있다.
더욱이 근래에는 IPS 모드 방식을 적용한 대형 TV 등의 화상표시장치가 제조됨에 따라 넓은 시야각 특성이 요구되고 있다. 이에 IPS 모드 액정표시장치에서는 넓은 시야각을 확보하기 위하여 액정셀의 한쪽 편광판의 편광자(PVA)와 액정셀 사이에 TAC 필름 대신에 등방성 보호필름이 위치하고, 다른 쪽 편광판의 편광자(PVA)와 액정셀 사이에 2개 이상의 광학특성이 다른 위상차 필름을 적층시키거나 1장의 Z축배향(두께방향배향)필름을 적층시켜 액정표시장치를 구성하였다.
Z축배향(두께방향배향)필름은 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 필름으로 연신 및 수축을 통하여 제작되나, 균일한 굴절률을 형성하기가 매우 어려워 생산성이 극히 낮은 문제가 있다.
본 발명은 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 단일층의 위상차 필름과 굴절률 등의 광학특성이 동일하고 필름 전체에 균일한 광학특성을 가지며, 제조 공정이 용이하여 대량 생산에 적합한 위상차 필름의 제조방법을 제공하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 제조된 위상차 필름을 적용하여 선명한 화질의 구현이 가능한 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치를 제공하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
1. 투명기재의 한 면에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하되, 상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 각 코팅층 형성 조성물은 굴절률이 nx=ny<nz, nx>ny=nz, nx>nz>ny 및 nx>ny>nz로 이루어진 군에서 선택되며, 상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 총 두께는 400㎚이하이고, 각 층의 두께는 서로 동일하며, 총 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
2. 위 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 그 두께가 각각 1 내지 100㎚인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
3. 위 2에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 그 두께가 각각 10 내지 50㎚인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
4. 위 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny=nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
5. 위 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층 각각의 굴절률은 nx>nz>ny이고, 광축이 서로 90°인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
6. 위 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny>nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
7. 위 1 내지 6중 어느 한 항의 방법으로 제조된 위상차 필름 및 편광자를 포함하는 편광판.
8. 위 7의 편광판을 포함하는 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치.
본 발명의 제조방법은 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny로 균일한 광학특성 구현이 가능하고, 제조공정이 용이하여 대량생산에 적합하다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 제조방법으로 얻어진 위상차 필름을 적용한 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 측면의 명암 대비비가 개선되고 색변이(Color Shift)가 최소화 되어 선명한 화상 구현이 가능하다.

본 발명은 투명기재의 한 면에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하되, 상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률 및 제1 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 두께 등을 최적화함으로써, 실질적 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 단일층의 위상차 필름과 동일한 광학특성을 균일하게 구현할 수 있고, 상기 위상차 필름이 적용된 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 측면의 명암 대비비가 개선되며 색변이(Color Shift)가 최소화되어 선명한 화상 구현이 가능한 위상차 필름의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
이하 본 발명을 상세히 설명한다.
본 발명에 따른 위상차 필름의 제조방법은 투명기재의 한 면에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함한다.
본 발명의 위상차 필름은 도 1의 (a)와 같이 투명기재, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층(20) 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층(30)의 순으로 형성되거나; 도 1의 (b)와 같이 투명기재, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층(30) 및 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층(20)의 순으로 형성될 수 있다.
상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 각 코팅층 형성 조성물은 굴절률이 nx=ny<nz, nx>ny=nz, nx>nz>ny, nx=ny<nz 및 nx>ny>nz로 이루어진 군에서 선택된다.
일례로, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny=nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름(도 2); 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층 각각의 굴절률은 nx>nz>ny이고, 광축이 서로 90°인 위상차 필름(도 3); 및 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny>nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름(도 4)일 수 있다.
상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 총 두께는 400㎚이하, 바람직하기로는 100㎚이하, 보다 바람직하기로는 50㎚인 것이 좋다. 총 두께 범위는 두 개의 서로 다른 이방성 코팅층이 하나의 층으로 인식되어 새로운 굴절률 이방성인 실질적 굴절률(Effective Refractive Index)을 형성하기 위한 중요한 요소이다.
상기 총 두께가 400㎚을 초과하면, 두께가 400㎚인 광학층과 초과되는 두께를 갖는 광학층의 두 개의 층이 형성된 것과 같은 굴절률을 형성하게 되어 본 발명이 목적으로 하는 nx>nz>ny의 실질적 굴절률을 형성하기 어려운 문제가 있다.
제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 그 두께가 서로 동일하며, 각각 200㎚이하, 바람직하기로는 1 내지 100㎚, 보다 바람직하기로는 10 내지 50㎚이다.
또한, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 총 굴절률은 nx>nz>ny이다. 이때, 도 5의 모식도와 같이 nx 면내방향에서 굴절률이 가장 큰 축의 굴절률이고, ny는 면내방향에서 nx의 수직방향의 굴절률이며, nz는 두께방향의 굴절률이다.
일반적으로 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 1매형의 연신형 위상차 필름은 면상스위칭 모드 액정의 광학 보상에 유리하도록 설계된 것이나, 연신 필름의 굴절률이 균일하도록 제조하는 것이 매우 어려워 생산성이 극히 낮은 문제가 있다.
본 발명은 위상차 필름이 균일한 굴절률(nx>nz>ny)을 가지도록 특정의 굴절률을 갖는 두 개의 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 조합하고, 상기 광학적 이방성 코팅층의 두께를 특정 범위로 한정한다.
이를 위하여 본 발명은 실질적인 굴절률의 개념을 도입한다. 도 6과 같이 빛의 파장과 물질의 두께를 비교하면, Layer1, Layer2 및 Layer3을 합한 두께와 빛의 파장이 거의 일치하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 도 6에서 λ는 파장이고 d는 두께이고 n은 굴절률이며 각 Layer의 두께는 동일하다.
광학적으로 상기 Layer1, Layer2 및 Layer3의 각각의 두께는 구별할 수 없으며, 각 Layer의 굴절률(n1, n2 및 n3) 또한 각각이 아니라 Layer1, Layer2 및 Layer3에 의한 하나의 굴절률로 인식된다.
이를 실질적 굴절률(Effective Refractive Index)라고 하며, 각 Layer의 굴절률의 평균[(n1+n2+n3)/3]이 된다. 또한 이의 두께는 각 Layer의 두께의 합(d1+d2+d3)된다.
즉, 위상차 필름은 각 Layer의 굴절률의 평균[(n1+n2+n3)/3]값의 실질적 굴절률을 가지며, 각 Layer의 두께의 합(d1+d2+d3)의 두께를 갖는 단일층으로 인식된다.
본 발명은 투명기재에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성한다.
일례로 도 1(a)에서와 같이 투명기재(10)상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층(20)을 형성하고, 상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층(20)상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층(30)을 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 도 1(b)에서와 같이 투명기재(10)상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층(30)을 형성하고, 상기 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층(30) 상에 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층(20)을 형성할 수 있다.
이때, 상기 각각의 제1 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 방법은 일반적인 것으로 특별히 한정하지는 않는다.
일례로 투명기재 상에 배향막을 형성하고, 그 위에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하는 배향막 형성법을 사용할 수 있다. 구체적으로 투명기재에 배향막 형성용 용액을 도포하고 배향성을 부여하여 배향막을 형성한다. 상기 배향막 상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하여 위상차 필름을 제조한다.
또한, 배향 기판 상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성한 후, 상기 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 투명기재상에 전사하는 방법을 사용할 수 있다. 구체적으로 일축 연신 고분자 필름 등의 광학적 이방성을 갖는 배향 기판 상에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성한다. 별도의 투명기재와 상기 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 접착시킨 후 배향 기판을 제거하여 위상차 필름을 제조할 수 있다.
또한, 용융한 코팅층 형성 조성물 함유층을 배향 기판에 접촉시켜 액정성 화합물을 특정 방향으로 배향시킨 후, 용융한 코팅층 형성 조성물 함유층을 고체화시켜 배향 기판을 제거하는 방법 등을 사용할 수 있다(한국특허공개 제2005-100640호).
상기 코팅층 형성 조성물은 광학 이방성을 가지고, 광 또는 열에 의한 가교성을 갖는 액정 화합물을 이용하여 제조할 수 있다. 액정 화합물은 일례로 반응성 액정 화합물(RM)이 포함될 수 있다. 반응성 액정 화합물(RM)의 예로서는 인포메이션디스플레이 10권 1호(반응성 액정 단량체(RM)의 최신 연구 동향)에 기재된 것을 들 수 있다.
반응성 액정 화합물은 액정성을 발현할 수 있는 메조겐(mesogen)과 중합이 가능한 말단기를 포함하여 액정상을 갖게 되는 단량체 분자를 말한다. 반응성 액정 화합물을 중합하게 되면 액정의 배열된 상을 유지하면서 가교된 고분자 네트워크를 얻을 수 있게 된다. 반응성 액정 화합물 분자는 투명점(clearing point)으로부터 냉각하게 되면 같은 구조의 액정 고분자를 사용하는 경우보다 액정상에서 상대적으로 낮은 점도에서 보다 잘 배향된 구조를 갖는 대면적의 도메인을 얻을 수 있다.
이와 같이 형성된 대면적의 액정상 가교 네트워크 필름은 액정이 가지는 광학 이방성이나 유전율 등의 특성을 그대로 유지하면서도 고체상의 박막 형태를 가지고 있기 때문에 기계적이나 열적으로 안정하다.
코팅층 형성 조성물은 코팅 공정의 효율성 및 코팅층의 균일성을 확보하기 위하여 용매에 희석시켜 사용하며, 바람직하기로는 액정 화합물을 용해시킬 수 있는 용매에 용해되어 균일함을 갖는 것이 바람직하다.
일례로 반응성 액정 화합물은 이를 용해시킬 수 있는 용매 구체적으로 프로필렌글리콜모노메틸에테르아세테이트(PGMEA), 메틸에틸케톤(MEK), 자일렌 및 클로로포름 중에서 선택된 1종 또는 2종 이상의 혼합 용매를 사용하여 코팅층 형성 조성물을 제조한다.
또한, 반응성 액정 화합물은 이를 중합 및 가교시키기 위한 개시제를 포함하여 코팅층 형성 조성물을 제조한다. 개시제는 공지의 광중합 개시제 또는 열중합 개시제를 사용할 수 있으며, 광중합 개시제가 반응시간 및 제어가 용이하여 바람직하다. 개시제는 반응성 액정 화합물 전체 고형분에 대해서 10중량% 이하, 바람직하게는 0.1 내지 5중량%이다.
또한, 반응성 액정 화합물은 첨가제를 추가로 포함하여 코팅층 형성 조성물을 제조한다. 첨가제는 일례로 분산제, 결합제(예컨대, 유리 라디칼 중합성 및 양이온성 중합성 결합성분), 방부제(예컨대, 글루타르디알데히드, 테트라메틸올아세틸렌우레아), 실란커플링제, 레벨링제, 가교제, 산화방지제, 탈기제, 소포제, 점도조절제, 유동 개선제, 침강방지제, 광택개선제, 윤활제, 접착 촉진제, 항피부제, 메팅제, 유화제, 안정제, 소수성 제제, 광안정화 첨가제, 처리 개선제 및 대전방지제 등이 사용될 수 있다.
코팅층 형성 방법은 특별히 한정하지는 않으나 구체적으로 핀 코팅, 롤 코팅, 디스펜싱 코팅 또는 그라비아 코팅 등이 사용될 수 있다. 코팅 방법에 따라 용매의 종류 및 사용량을 결정하는 것이 바람직하다.
상기 코팅층 형성 조성물에 함유된 용매는 건조 공정을 통하여 증발하게 된다.
건조는 특별히 한정하지 않으며 통상 열풍 건조기나 원적외선 가열기를 이용하여 수행할 수 있으며, 건조온도는 통상 30 내지 100℃, 바람직하게는 50 내지 80℃이고, 건조시간은 통상 30 내지 600초, 바람직하게는 120 내지 600초인 것이 좋다. 또한, 건조는 동일한 온도 조건에서 수행하거나, 단계적으로 온도를 상승시키면서 수행할 수 있다.
건조한 후 자외선 등의 광 조사에 의해 광경화시켜 또는 가열기 등의 열 조사에 의해 열경화시켜 광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성한다.
투명기재는 투명성, 기계적 강도, 열안정성, 수분차폐성, 등방성 등에서 우수한 필름이 사용될 수 있다. 구체적인 예로는, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌이소프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌나프탈레이트, 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트 등의 폴리에스테르계 수지; 디아세틸셀룰로오스, 트리아세틸셀룰로오스 등의 셀룰로오스계 수지; 폴리카보네이트계 수지; 폴리메틸(메타)아크릴레이트, 폴리에틸(메타)아크릴레이트 등의 아크릴계 수지; 폴리스티렌, 아크릴로니트릴-스티렌 공중합체 등의 스티렌계 수지; 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 시클로계 또는 노보넨 구조를 갖는 폴리올레핀, 에틸렌-프로필렌 공중합체 등의 폴리올레핀계 수지; 염화비닐계 수지; 나일론, 방향족 폴리아미드 등의 아미드계 수지; 이미드계 수지; 폴리에테르술폰계 수지; 술폰계 수지; 폴리에테르술폰계 수지; 폴리에테르에테르케톤계 수지; 황화 폴리페닐렌계 수지; 비닐알코올계 수지; 염화비닐리덴계 수지; 비닐부티랄계 수지; 알릴레이트계 수지; 폴리옥시메틸렌계 수지; 에폭시계 수지 등과 같은 열가소성 수지로 구성된 필름을 들 수 있으며, 상기 열가소성 수지의 블렌드물로 구성된 필름도 사용할 수 있다. 또한, (메타)아크릴계, 우레탄계, 아크릴우레탄계, 에폭시계, 실리콘계 등의 열경화성 수지 또는 자외선 경화형 수지로 된 필름을 이용할 수도 있다.
투명기재 중의 상기 열가소성 수지의 함량은 50 내지 100중량%, 바람직하게는 50 내지 99중량%, 보다 바람직하게는 60 내지 98중량%, 가장 바람직하게는 70 내지 97중량%인 것이 좋다. 그 함량이 50중량% 미만인 경우에는 열가소성 수지가 가지고 있는 본래의 고투명성을 충분히 발현하지 못할 수 있다.
이러한 투명기재는 적절한 1종 이상의 첨가제가 함유된 것일 수도 있다. 첨가제로는, 예를 들어 자외선흡수제, 산화방지제, 윤활제, 가소제, 이형제, 착색방지제, 난연제, 핵제, 대전방지제, 안료 및 착색제 등을 들 수 있다.
본 발명에 따라 제조된 위상차 필름을 포함하는 편광판 및 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치에 사용될 수 있다. 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 상기 위상차 필름이 포함된 편광판을 상판 또는 하판에 포함할 수 있다.
편광판은 편광자 및 상기 위상차 필름을 포함한다.
편광자는 입사하는 자연광을 원하는 단일 편광상태(선편광 상태)로 바꿔주는 역할을 하는 광학필름으로서, 당 분야에서 일반적으로 편광기능을 수행할 수 있는 것이면 특별히 한정하지는 않는다.
일례로 PVA(폴리비닐알코올) 필름에 요오드나 이색성 염료를 염색시키고 이것을 일정방향으로 연신하여 제조된 편광자 또는 투명기판 위에 편광기능을 가진 미세한 패턴의 전도성 격자들이 있고 격자의 골과 마루에 절연층이 코팅되어 있는 박판 편광판 등이 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 편광판은 기계적으로 약한 편광자를 보호하기 위한 보호필름이 추가될 수 있다. 보호필름은 수지의 종류에 따라 투습도가 다르며, 투명성, 기계적 강도, 열안정성, 수분차폐성 및 등방성 등이 우수한 필름을 사용할 수 있다.
이외의 편광판의 구성 및 제조방법은 당 분야에서 일반적으로 사용되는 것으로 특별히 한정하지는 않는다.
면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 액정셀 및 상기 액정셀의 상하에 편광판을 포함한다. 이때 본 발명의 따른 위상차 필름이 포함된 편광판을 상판으로 하고, 편광자의 양 면에 보호필름이 접합된 편광판을 하판으로 한다.
액정셀은 전압무인가 상태에서 시인측의 우측 수평 방향을 기준으로 반시계 방향을 정(+)방향으로 할 때 액정 배향 방향이 90°(S-IPS) 또는 액정 배향 방향이 0°(FFS)인 것을 사용할 수 있다.
S-IPS는 하기 수학식 1에 의해 정의되는 판넬 위상차값(△n×d) 값이 589nm 파장에서 300nm 내지 330nm 범위이고, FFS는 370 내지 400nm 범위이다.

(여기서, ne는 액정의 이상광선 굴절률, no는 정상광선 굴절률, d는 셀 갭을 나타냄; 주. △n, d는 벡터가 아닌 스칼라이다).
본 발명의 상판 편광판의 흡수축은 하판 편광판의 흡수축과 서로 직교하도록 구성된다. 이때 하판 편광자의 흡수축은 시인 측의 정면에서 볼 때 수직방향으로 위치하는 것이 바람직하다.
백라이트 유닛에 가까운 하판 편광자의 흡수축이 수직 방향일 때 하판 편광판을 통과한 빛은 수평방향으로 편광이 되며, 이는 판넬의 전압이 인가된 액정셀을 통과해 명(明)의 상태가 될 경우 빛은 수직 방향이 되어 흡수축이 수평방향인 시인 측의 상판 편광판을 통과한다. 이때 시인 측에서 흡수축이 수평방향인 편광 선글라스(편광 선글라스의 흡수축은 수평방향임)를 착용하고 있는 사람도 액정표시장치로부터 나온 빛을 인지할 수 있다. 만약 백라이트 유닛에 가까운 하판 편광판의 흡수축이 수평방향일 경우에는 편광 선글라스를 착용한 사람에게는 화상이 보이지 않게 되는 문제가 발생한다.
또한, 대형 액정표시장치의 경우 시인 쪽에서 화상이 잘 보이도록 하기 위해서는 인간의 주시야가 수직방향보다 수평방향이 넓다는 것을 고려하여 광고용 등의 특수 목적 액정표시장치를 제외한 일반적인 액정표시장치에서는 인간의 주시야가 수직방향보다 수평방향으로 넓기 때문에 4:3 또는 16:9의 형태로 제작되는 것이다. 따라서 시인측에서 봤을 때 하판 편광자의 흡수축은 수직, 상판 편광자의 흡수축은 평행으로 위치한다.
본 발명에 따른 위상차 필름의 광학특성은 푸앙카레구상에 각 광학적 이방성 코팅층 광학층을 통과할 때 편광상태 변화를 나타냄으로써 이해할 수 있다.
푸앙카레구는 특정 시각에서 편광상태의 변화를 표현하는데 아주 유용한 방법이므로 편광을 이용해 화상을 표시하는 액정표시장치에서 특정시각으로 진행하는 빛이 액정표시장치 내부 각각의 광학소자를 통과할 때 편광상태의 변화를 나타낼 수 있다.
본 발명에 따란 제조된 위상차 필름은 실질적 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 단일층의 위상차 필름과 동일한 편광상태 변화를 나타내며, 이를 적용한 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치는 측면의 명암 대비비가 개선되고 색변이(Color Shift)가 최소화되어 선명한 화상 구현이 가능하다.
이하, 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 바람직한 실시예를 제시하나, 하기 실시예는 본 발명을 예시하는 것일 뿐 본 발명의 범주 및 기술사상 범위 내에서 다양한 변경 및 수정이 가능함은 당업자에게 있어서 명백한 것이며, 이러한 변형 및 수정이 첨부된 특허청구범위에 속하는 것도 당연한 것이다.
실시예 1
트리아세틸셀룰로오스 투명기재상에 아크릴레이트계 배향액을 코팅하고 40℃에서 120초간 열풍 건조하여 배향막을 형성하였다. 상기 배향막 상에 반응성 액정 화합물(Merck사, RMS03-013)을 포함하는 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 80℃에서 30초간 예비 건조하였다. 이후에 110℃에서 5초간 건조하여 3㎛의 액정 코팅층을 형성하고 14mW 노광 램프로 500초간 자외선으로 광경화하여 굴절률이 nx>ny=nz이고, 두께가 20㎚인 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하였다.
상기와 동일한 방법으로 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 상에 배향막을 형성하고, 상기 배향막 상에 반응성 액정 화합물을 포함하는 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 굴절률이 nx=ny<nz이고 두께가 20㎚인 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하여 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
실시예 2
상기 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층 각각의 굴절률은 nx>nz>ny이고, 광축이 서로 90°인 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
실시예 3
상기 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층은 nx>ny>nz이고 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 굴절률이 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
실시예 4
상기 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 각 두께가 200㎚인 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
비교예 1
굴절률이 nx>nz>ny로 시판중인 위상차 필름(Z-플레이트, 니토덴코사).
비교예 2
굴절률이 nx=ny<nz인 제1광학적 이방성 필름과 굴절률이 nx>ny=nz인 제2광학적 이방성 필름을 접합하여 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
비교예 3
굴절률이 nx>nz>ny이고, 광축이 서로 90°인 제1광학적 이방성 필름과 제2광학적 이방성 필름을 접합하여 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
비교예 4
굴절률이 nx=ny<nz인 제1광학적 이방성 필름과 굴절률이 nx>ny>nz인 제2광학적 이방성 필름을 접합하여 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
비교예 5
상기 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하되, 두께가 250㎚인 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층과 두께가 250㎚인 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하여 위상차 필름을 제조하였다.
실험예
면상스위칭 모드의 액정셀(100)에 상기 실시예 1-4, 비교예 1 및 5의 위상차 필름(50), PVA 편광자(210), 트리아세틸셀룰로오스(TAC) 보호필름(220)의 순으로 적층된 편광판(200)을 상판으로 접합하였다. 하판에는 액정셀(100)로부터 트리아세틸셀룰로오스(TAC) 보호필름(320), PVA 편광자(310) 및 트리아세틸셀룰로오스(TAC) 보호필름(330)의 순으로 적층된 편광판(300)을 접합하여 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치를 제조하였다(도 7).
또한, 비교예 2-4의 위상차 필름(60, 70), PVA 편광자(210), 트리아세틸셀룰로오스(TAC) 보호필름(220)의 순으로 적층된 편광판(200)을 상판으로 사용하여 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치를 제조하였다(도 8).
도 9 내지 13은 본 발명의 실시예 1-4와 비교예 1(도 9), 비교예 2(도 10), 비교예 3(도 11), 비교예 4(도 12), 비교예 5(도 13)의 액정표시장치의 편광상태를 θ=60°, Φ=45°방향에서 푸앙카레구(Poincare Sphere)상에 나타낸 것이다.
도 9와 같이 실시예 1-4는 비교예 1과 동일한 한 경로의 편광상태를 보였다. 즉, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층과 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 각각 개별 굴절률을 나타내지 않고, 이들의 평균인 실질적 굴절률을 갖는 하나의 위상차 필름으로 표현됨을 확인할 수 있었다.
도 9에서 점 1은 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 통과전의 편광상태이고, 점 3은 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 통과한 후의 편광상태이다.
비교예 2-4는 각 광학적 이방성 코팅층 대신에 동일한 굴절률을 갖는 광학적 이방성 필름을 2장 적층한 것으로 경로가 두 개인 편광상태를 나타내었다(도 10 내지 12).
도 10 내지 도 12에서 점 1은 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 통과전의 편광상태이고, 점 2는 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층을 통과한 후의 편광상태이며, 점 3은 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 통과한 후의 편광상태이다.
비교예 5는 광학적 이방성 코팅층의 두께가 너무 두꺼워 기준 파장 중 Green(550nm) 및 Red(650nm)은 하나의 편광상태를 유지하나, Blue(450nm) 파장은 두 개의 편광상태를 형성하여 파장 분산성이 저하된다. 이는 시야각 및 색변이(Color Shift)등의 광학 특성을 저하시키게 된다(도 13).
또한, 도 14 및 도 15는 각각 실시예 1과 비교예 2의 시감도 전방위 투과도 시뮬레이션을 실시한 것으로 암(BLACK)을 화면에 표시할 경우의 시감도 전방위 투과도 분포를 나타낸다. 스케일상의 범위는 컬러필터를 고려하지 않은 암(Black)상태 시감도 투과율이 0% 내지 2%이며 투과도 2%를 초과한 부위는 붉은 색, 투과도가 낮은 부위는 파란색으로 표시된다.
중앙의 파란색의 범위가 넓을수록 넓은 시야각을 나타내는 것이므로 좌측 방향에서의 시야각이 넓다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
비교예 2에 비해 실시예 1의 투과도가 현저히 낮아 측면의 명암 대비비가 개선되고 색변이(Color Shift)가 최소화 되어 선명한 화상 구현이 가능할 것으로 예상된다.

Claims (8)

  1. 투명기재의 한 면에 코팅층 형성 조성물을 도포하여 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하되,
    상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 각 코팅층 형성 조성물은 굴절률이 nx=ny<nz, nx>ny=nz, nx>nz>ny 및 nx>ny>nz로 이루어진 군에서 선택되며,
    상기 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 총 두께는 400㎚이하이고, 각 층의 두께는 서로 동일하며, 총 굴절률이 nx>nz>ny인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  2. 청구항 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 그 두께가 각각 1 내지 100㎚인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  3. 청구항 2에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층은 그 두께가 각각 10 내지 50㎚인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  4. 청구항 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny=nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  5. 청구항 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층 및 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층 각각의 굴절률은 nx>nz>ny이고, 광축이 서로 90°인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  6. 청구항 1에 있어서, 제1광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx>ny>nz이고, 제2광학적 이방성 코팅층의 굴절률은 nx=ny<nz인 위상차 필름의 제조방법.
  7. 청구항 1 내지 6 중 어느 한 항의 방법으로 제조된 위상차 필름 및 편광자를 포함하는 편광판.
  8. 청구항 7의 편광판을 포함하는 면상스위칭 모드 액정표시장치.
