Description

Mobile Conveyor
This invention relates to a mobile conveyor for conveying or elevating bulk granular or particulate material, such as crushed stone, sand and gravel, crushed glass, coal and bark etc, and in particular to a mobile and portable radial stacking conveyor wherein a discharge end of the conveyor may be moved in an arc such that material may be discharged therefrom to form an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile.
Mobile conveyors or stackers are frequently used on quarries and other work sites for stockpiling granular and particulate material or for conveying such material into shipping conveyors, onto vehicles or other conveyors. Such conveyors are typically mounted on a self-propelled chassis, typically having drive tracks, the conveyor being pivotally mounted on the chassis at one end and linked to the chassis via one or more hydraulic rams to allow the inclination of the conveyor to be adjusted. The conveyor is typically moveable between a lowered substantially horizontal transport configuration and a raised operative configuration wherein the conveyor is in an inclined position with a head or discharge end thereof being above a tail or loading end.
Where it is desired to create a larger stockpile, radial stacking conveyors are often used, wherein the conveyor is mounted such that the head or discharge end of the conveyor can be swung radially with respect to the tail or loading end of the conveyor to form an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile. However, such known radial stacking conveyors can be difficult to move once deployed on site as they generally have limited mobility. Furthermore, such known radial stacking conveyors tend to be extremely large and therefore difficult to transport between sites. An object of the present invention is to provide a mobile compact radial staking conveyor that can create an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile while being readily mobile on site and easily moved between sites when in a transport configuration.
The term "bulk particulate material" and similar terms refer to various materials including particulates such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, cement, concrete, asphalt, coal, dirt, pellets, granules, powders, hulls, wood chips, grains and other similar products.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a mobile conveyor comprising a base and a conveyor mounted upon said base by a support structure, said conveyor having a moveable conveying surface extending between a loading end and a discharge end, wherein said conveyor is mounted to be swung about a substantially vertical axis coincident with the loading end of the conveyor whereby the discharge end of the conveyor may be displaced in a radial manner with respect to the loading end to form an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile. Preferably the base includes a wheeled or tracked chassis mounted beneath the loading end of the conveyor. In a preferred embodiment the base includes a tracked chassis mounted beneath the loading end of the conveyor for enhanced mobility and stability over soft and/or uneven ground while proving a low profile to minimise the height of the loading end of the conveyor.
Preferably the chassis is self-propelled. A power unit may be mounted on the base for driving the wheels or tracks and/or for operating the conveyor and/or at least one extendable support member of the support structure. The power unit may be mounted upon the chassis or upon an intermediate frame mounted on the chassis.
The base may include an intermediate frame pivotally mounted on the chassis for rotation about said substantially vertical axis. Preferably ground engaging wheels are mounted on a distal end of the intermediate frame, said ground engaging wheels being connected to the intermediate frame by pivot means wherein the wheels can be laterally pivoted from a longitudinal travelling position, wherein the rotational axis of the wheels extend substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor, and a radial position, wherein the rotational axis of the wheels extends through said substantially vertical rotational axis of the chassis so that the conveyor may be swung around said vertical pivot axis.
Said ground engaging wheels may be driven, for example by means of hydraulic and/or electric motors, to permit the conveyor to be swung about said vertical axis. The ground engaging wheels may be braked and/or may be lockable to selectively prevent rotation thereof.
Preferably a respective ground engaging wheel is mounted at a distal end of a respective frame portion, said frame portion being pivotally mounted on said intermediate frame to be laterally pivoted between a first position, wherein the frame portion extends substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the conveyor when the wheels are in their travelling position, and a second position, wherein the frame portion extends substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor when the wheels are in their radial position.
Preferably said support structure extends between said intermediate frame of the base and the conveyor and is preferably extendable and retractable to vary the height and/or inclination of the conveyor. Preferably the support structure comprises at least one telescopic or extendable support member, preferably in the form of one or more hydraulic rams, said at least one telescopic or extendable support member being extendable and retractable to adjust the angle of inclination of the conveyor to adjust the height of the discharge end of the conveyor. Such support structure may also be arranged to adjust the height of the loading end of the conveyor, for example by means of one or more further telescopic or extendable support members.
Preferably the loading end of the conveyor is provided with a collection hopper for delivering bulk granular or particulate material onto the loading end of the conveyor. Preferably a portion of the conveyor comprising the discharge end is foldable between an extended position and a folded position about a horizontal pivot axis to reduce the overall length of the mobile conveyor when the conveyor is in a lowered transport configuration. Preferably said foldable portion is adapted to lie parallel to the remainder of the conveyor when in its folded position. In one embodiment said foldable portion comprises approximately 1/3 of the total length of the conveyer.
Preferably said at least one telescopic or extendable support member is connected to the conveyor adjacent said foldable section thereof. The conveyor may comprise an endless belt mounted between elongate beam members.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a mobile conveyor apparatus comprising a wheeled or tracked chassis, and a conveyor mounted upon said chassis, said conveyor having a moveable conveying surface extending between a loading end and a discharge end, said conveyor being pivotally mounted on the chassis for pivotal movement about a substantially vertical pivot axis substantially aligned with the loading end of the conveyor, whereby the discharge end of the conveyor may be displaced in a radial manner with respect to the loading end to form an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile, wherein ground engaging wheels or tracks of said wheeled or tracked chassis are located beneath the loading end of the conveyor and are mounted on a chassis portion pivotally mounted on the remainder of the chassis to be rotatable about said vertical axis.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a side view of a mobile conveyor according to an embodiment of the present invention in its raised operative configuration;
Figure 2 is a side view of the mobile conveyor of Figure 1 ; Figure 3 is a detailed plan view of the base frame of the mobile conveyor of Figure 1 with the ground engaging wheels in their travelling position; and
Figure 4 is a detailed plan view of the base frame of the mobile conveyor of Figure 1 with the ground engaging wheels in their radial position.
As illustrated in the drawings, a mobile and portable radial stacking conveyor in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention comprises an elongate endless belt conveyor 10 supported between elongate parallel beam members 12, 14. The conveyor 10 is driven by means of a suitable drive motor 16 to elevate and transfer bulk granular and particulate material between a loading region at a tail end A of the conveyor and a discharge region at a raised head end B of the conveyor. A collection hopper 18 is mounted above the belt conveyor 10 at the tail end B of the conveyor. An end portion 20 of the conveyor 10, comprising the head end, is foldable with respect to the remainder of the conveyor 10 to allow the length of the conveyor 10 to be reduced when in a transport configuration, for example to allow the conveyor apparatus to be fitted onto a trailer or into a standard container.
The conveyor 10 is mounted on a base frame 22 via a support assembly comprising a first linkage 24 extending between the base frame 22 and the conveyor 10 at the tail end A of the conveyor 10 and a telescopic second linkage 26 extending between the base frame 22 and the conveyor 10 at an opposite end of the base frame 22 from said first linkage 24. Preferably said telescopic second linkage 26 comprises a pair of double acting hydraulic rams adapted to be extended and retracted to vary the angle of inclination of the conveyor 10 to adjust the height of the head end B of the conveyor 10. The first linkage 24 may be arranged to enable adjustment of the height of the tail end A of the conveyor 10, for example by means of one or more telescopic or extendable members.
The base frame 22 is pivotally mounted on a tracked chassis 28 arranged beneath the loading region of the conveyor 10 such that the base frame 22, and conveyor 10, can be swung around a substantially vertical axis X coincident with the loading region of the conveyor 10 such that the head end B of the conveyor 10 moves in an arc to create an arcuate or kidney shaped stockpile of material discharged from the discharge region at the head end of the conveyor 10.
A power unit 30, such as a diesel engine, is mounted on the base frame 22 to provide power for the tracked chassis 28 and to provide electrical power, by means of a generator, and hydraulic pressure, by means of a hydraulic pump, for the conveyor 10 and support assembly.
A best seen from Figures 3 and 4, ground engaging wheels 32,34 are mounted on an end of the base frame 22 opposite the tail end A of the conveyor 10. The ground engaging wheels 32,34 are mounted on respective support arms 36,38 pivotally mounted on either side of the base frame 22 such that the wheels 32,34 may be moved between a travelling position, shown in Figure 3, wherein the axis of rotation of each of the wheels 32,34 extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor 10, and a radial position, shown in Figure 4, wherein the axis of rotation of each of the wheels 32,34 are aligned with the pivot axis X of the base frame 22 on the tracked chassis 28.
When in the radial position, the support arms 36,38 of the wheels 32,34 extend transverse to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor 10 to act as outriggers providing enhanced stability to the conveyor 10 when in use.
The wheels 32,34 are preferably braked and/or lockable and may be driven, for example by means of a respective hydraulic or electric motor, to permit the conveyor 10 to be swung about the pivot axis X of the base frame 22 on the tracked chassis 28. The base frame 22 may be demountable from the tracked chassis 28, for example to allow the base frame to be mounted on the fifth wheel coupling of a tractor unit.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment(s) described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
