Abstract

A good conveyor operator will initially dump material from the lowest height possible. As the stockpile is created the operator will incrementally raise the conveyor, keeping the discharge end of the conveyor just above the stockpile. Minimizing the height of the free fall of the material from the discharge end of the conveyor minimizes the creation of dust and produces a stockpile having a much more uniform material size distribution.
When a larger kidney shaped stockpile is desired the conveyor is provided with wheels which may be laterally pivoted 90° from a longitudinal travelling position to a radial position wherein the conveyor may be swung around a pivot axis. For safe operation and to efficiently change conveyor height without laterally pivoting the wheels, the conveyor must have a frame which ensures the spacing between the wheels and the pivot axis is generally invariant so that the wheels do not move laterally when the conveyor is elevated.

Description

TRAILER CONVEYOR
ADAPTED FOR KIDNEY SHAPED STOCKPILING
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to portable belt conveyors which can be towed behind a vehicle and which when operationally set up, may pivot around their feed end portions to create a large kidney shaped stockpile. More particularly this application relates to a counterbalanced mono-fold stockpiling trailer conveyor which is adapted for kidney shaped stockpiling. 10 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
When a conveyor is being used to stockpile material a good operator will initially dump material from the lowest height possible. As the stockpile is created the operator will incrementally raise the conveyor, keeping the discharge 15 end of the conveyor just above the stockpile. Minimizing the height of the free fall of the material from the discharge end of the conveyor minimizes the creation of dust. When material falls a substantial distance the larger material runs to the periphery of the stockpile. The 20 practice of incrementally raising the conveyor while stockpiling produces a stockpile having a much more uniform material size distribution.
Canadian Patent application No. filed by Paschal McCloskey et al is for a counterbalanced mono-fold stockpiling trailer conveyor. It utilizes a single wheeled support which incrementally moves toward towards its landing leg 50 as its telescoping arm 40 elongates raising the conveyor. Purchasers of this conveyor wanted it fitted with wheels having axles which could 10 laterally pivot 90 degrees so that during operation the conveyor could swing laterally on the wheels and produce a much larger kidney shaped stock stockpile without moving the the feed end of the conveyor. After the wheels having axles which could laterally pivot 90 degrees so that the conveyor 15 could swing laterally were fitted to this conveyor, it was found that in use, operators found the manoeuvre of pivoting the wheels from a radial conveyor swing position, to a longitudinal lift position, and then back to the radial position, each time they raised the conveyor, to time 20 consuming. They attempted to raise or lower the conveyor with the wheels in the radial position. When the height of the conveyor was changed without laterally pivoting the wheels, the tires were then scuffed laterally along the ground. In extreme cases the tires were rolled off their 25 rims. Operation in this manner was not only unstable, but additionally unsafe.
OBJECTS AND STATEMENT OF INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to disclose a stockpiling trailer conveyor which is uniquely adapted for 5 kidney shaped stockpiling. It is an object of this invention to disclose a stockpiling trailer conveyor which is more stable, and safer when used for kidney shaped stockpiling. It is an object of this invention to disclose a stockpiling prayer trailer conveyor which may be safely 10 elevated without laterally pivoting the wheels from a radial conveyor swing position to a longitudinal lift position. It is an object of this invention to disclose a stockpiling trailer conveyor which has wheels which remain stationary as the conveyor is raised or lowered. It is yet a further 15 object of this invention to disclose a counterbalanced mono-fold stockpiling conveyor trailer having wheels which remains stationary when the conveyor is raised or lowered.
One aspect of this invention provides for a trailer conveyor for stockpiling material comprising: a first 20 conveyor section having a feed end portion having an upright pivot axis, a central portion, and an intermediate end portion; a folding conveyor section having one end hingably attached to the intermediate end portion of the first conveyor section, and having an opposite discharge end portion, so that in a folded position the folding conveyor section is adjacent to the first conveyor section, and in an S

operative unfolded position it linearly extends the first conveyor section; a continuous driven belt encircling the conveyor sections; a wheeled frame having a portion of fixed length spacing the wheels from the pivot axis; and, elevation means for elevating the conveyor sections above 10 the frame; whereby when the conveyor sections are elevated above the frame the spacing between the wheels and the pivot axis is generally invariant so that the wheels do not move longitudinally with respect to the conveyor. Most preferably, the conveyor further comprises a lateral wheel 15 pivot means connected to the frame so that the wheels may be laterally pivoted 90 from a longitudinal travelling position to a radial position wherein the conveyor may be swung around the pivot axis so that material may be stockpiled in a kidney shaped pattern. 20 Another aspect of this invention provides for a conveyor as above wherein there is one and only one folding conveyor section, and this folding section has a length exceeding one half of the length of the first conveyor section. Additionally, a counterweight is positioned 25 adjacent to the feed end portion of the conveyor to balanced the folding conveyor section.
Various other objects, advantages and features of novelty which characterize this invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims which form part of this disclosure. The following is a discussion and description of the S
preferred specific embodiments of this invention, such being made with reference to the drawings, wherein the same reference numerals are used to indicate the same or similar parts and/ or structure. It should be noted that such discussion and description is not meant to unduly limit the 10 scope of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Turning now to the drawings and more particularly to figure 1 we have an elevational view of a counterbalanced stockpiling conveyor trailer 20 having a wheeled frame 22 15 which remains stationary when the conveyor 20 is raised or lowered. The conveyor comprises: a feed conveyor section 24 having a feed end portion 28 having an upright pivot axis 30, a central portion 32, and an intermediate end portion 34; and a folding conveyor section 26 having one end 20 hingably attached to the intermediate end portion 34 of the first conveyor section 24, and having an opposite discharge end portion 37, so that in a folded position the folding conveyor section 26 is adjacent to the first conveyor section 24, and in an operative unfolded position it linearly extends the first conveyor section. A continuous driven belt 36 encircles the conveyor sections 24,26. A 5 wheeled frame 22 supports the conveyor 20. The wheeled frame 22 has a portion of fixed length 23 spacing the wheels 38 from the pivot axis 30. Consequently, when the an elevation means 40 elevates the conveyor sections 24,26 on the frame 22 the spacing between the wheels 38 and the pivot 10 axis 30 is generally invariant so that the wheels 38 do not move longitudinally with respect to the conveyor 20.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the conveyor 20 is a mono-fold trailer conveyor 20. The mono-fold conveyor 20 is similar to that described above however, 15 there is one and only one folding conveyor section 26, and this folding section 26 has a length exceeding one half of the length of the first conveyor section. A counterweight 27 is positioned adjacent to the feed end portion 28 of the conveyor 20. The counterweight 27 is necessitated by the 20 otherwise unbalanced folding conveyor section 26, and sized to stably maintain the discharge end 37 of the conveyor 20 in an elevated position when the conveyor 20 is in an operative unfolded position.

Most preferably, the mono-fold conveyor 20 is adapted for stockpiling material 40 in a kidney shaped pattern 42. This is best shown in figure 2 is a plan view of the conveyor 20 shown in figure 1. The conveyor 20 is adapted for stockpiling material 40 in a kidney shaped pattern 42 by lateral wheel pivoting means 44 connected to the frame 22 so that the wheels 38 may be laterally pivoted 90° from a longitudinal travelling position (as shown in figure 1) to a radial position (as shown in figure 2) wherein the conveyor 20 may be swung 44 around the pivot 10 axis 30 so that material 40 may be stockpiled in a kidney shaped pattern 42.
Most preferably folding conveyor section 26 unfolds in a vertical plane, and further comprises a hydraulic folding means 48 for the unfolding thereof. Most 15 preferably, the elevation means 50 is hydraulic; and the wheels 38 may also be hydraulically pivoted. A loading hopper 52 is positioned above the feed end portion 28 of the conveyor 20. A landing foot is rigidly attached beneath the frame 22 in the area of the pivot axis 30. 20 While the invention has been described with preferred specific embodiments thereof, it will be understood that this description is intended to illustrate and not to limit the scope of the invention. The optimal dimensional relationships for all parts of the invention are to include all variations in size, materials, shape, form, function, assembly, and operation, which are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art. All equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings, and described in the specification, are intended to be encompassed in this invention. What is desired to be protected is defined by the following claims.
