Abstract

A vehicle warning device (102) comprises a clip (104) which is attachable to a door of a parked vehicle, and a wing (106) having a proximal edge which is adjacent to the clip and a distal edge which is remote from the clip. A projecting extent of the in use wing between the proximal and distal edges is greater than a standard exterior rear view mirror of a parked vehicle with which the vehicle warning device is being used. The device also includes a flexure (108, 122) which joins the proximal edge of the wing and the clip, a longitudinal extent of the proximal edge of the wing is greater than a longitudinal extent of the distal edge of the wing. Preferably, a lateral extent of a hinge portion of the flexure is U-shaped or substantially U-shaped.

Description

Vehicle Warning Device
This invention relates to a vehicle accessory for protecting exterior rear view mirrors of parked vehicles, particularly of cars and vans. The invention also relates to a vehicle warning device. Vehicle exterior rear view mirrors protrude generally into the path of passing traffic when parked, and are therefore liable to be hit and damaged by the traffic. This is particularly so for the door-mounted rear view mirror of cars and light vans. Some vehicles have mirrors which are positioned by an electric motor when the ignition is switched off so that they are flush with the side of the vehicle. This helps to protect the mirrors from being hit by passing vehicles. In other vehicles, the mirrors have a mounting which allows them to be rotated by a user of the vehicle so that they are flush with the side of the vehicle.
However, for many vehicles there remains a risk that, while parked, their mirrors will be damaged by passing traffic or even pedestrians. From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for a reducing the risk of a vehicle exterior rear view mirror from being damaged by passing traffic or pedestrians when parked.
Furthermore, a curb side, pavement side or pedestrian side indicator to indicate, for example, a charging of an electric vehicle, would be beneficial. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a vehicle warning device comprising a clip which is attachable to a door of a parked vehicle; a wing having a proximal edge which is adjacent to the clip and a distal edge which is remote from the clip, a projecting extent of the in use wing between the proximal and distal edges being greater than a standard exterior rear view mirror of a parked vehicle with which the vehicle warning device is being used; and a flexure which joins the proximal edge of the wing and the clip, a longitudinal extent of the proximal edge of the wing being greater than a longitudinal extent of the distal edge of the wing.
The clip includes a jaw that allows it to be attached to the vertical edge of the door. In one embodiment the mirror is attached to the traffic-side door of the parked car.
Preferable and/or optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2 to 14, inclusive.
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which:
Figures 1 and 2 show a vehicle warning device of the present invention; and
Figure 3 shows the vehicle warning device when in use.
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figures 1 and 2, which shows a vehicle warning device (102) of the present invention comprising a clip (104) and a wing (106) joined by a flexure (108, 122).
The clip is elongate and is attachable to a traffic-side door of a parked vehicle or to a curb-side, pavement-side or pedestrian-side door. The attachment to the door may be to a panel of the door or the glass of the window if, for example, there is no frame surrounding the glass as typically found with drop-tops or cabrioles.
Preferably, the clip attaches to the door along a vertical or substantially vertical edge of the door panel or glass distal to a hinge arrangement joining the door to the body of the vehicle. In one embodiment, the clip has a jaw (1 18) extending along its entire longitudinal extent. The jaw is comprised of two opposing strips of material (110 and 112) joined to each other along contiguous longitudinal edges (114). The material of the strips is preferably flexible, so that the clip can be pushed against the edge of a vehicle door and the vehicle door will fit into a gap (116) between the jaws, to form a tight but releasable fit. The size of the gap is therefore comparable to the thickness of the part of the door to which it is to be attached. Preferably, the gap is less than the thickness of the part of the door to which it is to be attached, so that a tight interference fit is formed as the jaws flex. The dimensions of the clip are such that the vehicle door will still be closeable and lockable. In particular, a thickness (120) is comparable to, and preferably less than, a gap between the door to which the vehicle warning device is fitted and the body of the car when the door is closed. The flexure includes a hinge portion (108). In this case, the hinge portion (108) is a live hinge integrally formed as one-piece with the clip and the wing. However, the hinge portion may be a separate part.
In this embodiment, the hinge portion (108) has a non-planar lateral extent, in this case being U-shaped or substantially U-shaped. However, other non-planar lateral extents can be envisaged, such as V-shaped or zigzag.
The flexure also includes a spacer (122) which joins the hinge portion to a spine or adjacent to the spine of the clip. The spacer (122) extends the length of the clip and the hinge portion (108), and has a lateral extent which is sufficient to prevent the flexure from being impeded by the outer surface of the door to which the vehicle warning device is attached when the wing flexes. The spacer thus spaces the wing and the hinge portion of the flexure away from the clip and the adjacent vehicle doors when in use.
As such, if the wing is hit by a passing vehicle or pedestrian, the wing can oscillate back and forth via flexing of the hinge before returning to its original position projecting from the car door, thereby reducing the effect of the impact. The wing, in this case, is substantially triangular shape. However, other shapes can be envisaged. However, a proximal edge of the wing contiguous with the hinge portion of the flexure has a greater length than a distal edge of the wing which is remote from the flexure. The proximal edge of the wing has a length which matches or substantially matches that of the flexure and the clip. This makes the wing far more robust and the device less likely to break.
The wing having a proximal edge which is at least substantially the length of the flexure and the clip improves the resilience and longevity of the vehicle warning device, allowing it to accept knocks and general wear and tear without easily fracturing or breaking along the hinge portion. In this case, the wing tapers from its proximal edge to its distal edge.
The wing preferably has a high visibility surface (124). For example, it has a brightly coloured reflective surface that draws attention to the vehicle warning device by day or night. The surface may be a suitable indicator for oncoming traffic, or if curb-side, may be a suitable indicator to warn pedestrians of, for example, a recharging process if being used with an electric vehicle, and/or being a disabled driver and such like.
A length (124) of the wing between its proximal edge and its distal edge or point is such that it extends a greater distance from the body of the vehicle than does the exterior rear view mirror to be protected. The use of the vehicle warning device is shown in Figure 3. In panel A of Figure 3, the clip of the vehicle warning device is affixed to vehicle door (302). In panel B, the door has been closed, resulting in the vehicle warning device being attached to the door by the clip. The flexure between the clip and the wing is not prevented from acting as a hinge by this attachment. In panel C, the wing extends a greater distance from the body of the vehicle than does the exterior rear view mirror to be protected. Consequently, the vehicle warning device acts as a clear indicator for on-coming traffic or approaching pedestrians and protects the vehicle's wing mirror. The device may thus also be considered to be a wing-mirror protector or wing-mirror protector device. In panel D, the effect of the wing being hit by a passing vehicle or pedestrian is shown diagrammatically: the flexure allows the wing to oscillate in a damped fashion before returning to the position shown in panel C.
Although the hinge portion of the flexure is preferably U-shaped or non-planar, it may optionally be planar.
The hinge portion may also include a waisted or necked portion, or a portion of another material which may be co-moulded or co-extruded, for example, to promote flex.
The embodiments described above are provided by way of examples only, and various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
