Definitions
- the present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly to a liquid crystal display device having a multi-pixel structure.
- the liquid crystal display device is used not only as a large television but also as a small display device such as a display unit of a mobile phone.
- the viewing angle of a TN (Twisted Nematic) mode liquid crystal display device that has been often used in the past has been relatively narrow, but in recent years, a wide viewing angle liquid crystal display such as an IPS (In-Plane-Switching) mode and a VA (Vertical Alignment) mode.
- IPS In-Plane-Switching
- VA Very Alignment
- an MVA (Multi-domain Vertical Alignment) mode in which a plurality of liquid crystal domains are formed in one pixel region is known.
- an alignment regulating structure is provided on at least one liquid crystal layer side of a pair of substrates facing each other with a vertical alignment type liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween.
- the alignment regulating structure is, for example, a linear slit (opening) or a rib (projection structure) provided on the electrode.
- a CPA (Continuous Pinwheel Alignment) mode is also known.
- a general CPA mode liquid crystal display device a pixel electrode having a highly symmetric shape is provided, and an opening and a protrusion are provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the counter substrate corresponding to the center of the liquid crystal domain.
- This protrusion is also called a rivet.
- the liquid crystal molecules are inclined and aligned in a radial shape in accordance with an oblique electric field formed by the counter electrode and the highly symmetrical pixel electrode.
- the rivet is provided, the tilt alignment of the liquid crystal molecules is stabilized by the alignment regulating force of the tilted side surface of the rivet.
- viewing angle characteristics are improved by aligning liquid crystal molecules in one pixel in a radial shape.
- the difference between the display quality from the front direction and the display quality from the oblique direction is remarkable.
- display characteristics such as color and gamma characteristics when viewed from the diagonal direction are significantly different from those of the front.
- the optical axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules is the molecular long axis direction, and the optical axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules is inclined to some extent with respect to the main surface of the substrate during halftone display. In this state, the viewing angle (viewing direction) is changed, and the display characteristics when viewed from an oblique direction parallel to the optical axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules are greatly different from the display characteristics in the front direction.
- the display image viewed from the oblique direction looks generally whitish compared to the display image viewed from the front direction.
- Such a phenomenon is also called “whitening”.
- a human face even if the facial expression of the human face is viewed from the front without any sense of incongruity, it looks generally whitish when viewed from an oblique direction, and the subtle gradation expression of the skin color is crushed white. It may appear to be stuck.
- a plurality of (typically two) subpixel electrodes are divided by dividing one pixel electrode into a plurality of (typically two) subpixel electrodes (typically, a plurality of subpixel electrode voltages are typically different). 2) sub-pixels are formed.
- the gradation characteristics of the sub-pixels are adjusted so that the display quality in the oblique direction does not deteriorate compared with the display quality in the front direction (for example, Patent Documents 1 to 4). 3).
- Patent Document 3 discloses a liquid crystal display device that varies the effective voltage of the sub-pixel by changing the voltage of the adjacent auxiliary capacitance wiring (CS wiring) to be different.
- the source driver applies a source signal voltage from one source output terminal to one column of pixels, and the gate driver from one gate output terminal to one row of pixels. Apply gate signal voltage. For this reason, in the liquid crystal display device of patent document 3, the increase in the cost of a driver can be suppressed.
- the configuration of the liquid crystal display device 900 disclosed in Patent Document 3 will be described with reference to FIG.
- the effective voltages of the subpixel electrodes are different by applying different CS voltages to the CS wirings that directly or indirectly form auxiliary capacitances with the corresponding subpixel electrodes.
- Sub-pixels belonging to one pixel may exhibit different luminance.
- whitening is improved in this way.
- a plurality of CS trunk lines CST are provided in a peripheral area located around the display area, and a plurality of CS lines extend from each CS trunk line CST to the display area.
- the processing amount of a CS voltage generation circuit (not shown) is reduced by applying an equivalent auxiliary capacitance voltage (CS voltage) to the CS wiring extending from the same CS trunk line CST.
- the liquid crystal display device 900 shown in FIG. 10 twelve CS trunk lines CST1 to CST12 are provided, and different CS voltages generated in the CS voltage generation circuit are supplied to the CS wiring via the CS trunk lines CST1 to CST12. Is done.
- the greater the number of CS trunk lines the longer the inversion period of the CS voltage applied to one CS trunk line. If the waveform of the CS voltage ideally changes to a rectangular shape, even if there are two CS trunk lines, display can be performed without uneven brightness.
- the larger the size of the liquid crystal display device the more the CS voltage Therefore, the display cannot be performed without uneven brightness. For this reason, by increasing the number of CS trunk lines, it is possible to perform a display in which the inversion period of the CS voltage with respect to the horizontal scanning period is relatively long and luminance unevenness is suppressed.

- FIG. 4 the voltage applied to the gate line G in the liquid crystal display device 100, the voltage applied to the gates of the TFTs 180a and 180b, the source driver output voltage, the voltage of the first source line Sa, the voltage of the second source line Sb, The waveform diagram of CS voltage is shown.
- the voltage of the gate wiring G for selecting the pixel P is changed from low to high to turn on the TFTs 130a and 130b. Thereafter, the voltages of the CS trunk line CST and the counter electrode 144 that are electrically connected to each other are changed.
- a voltage Vs corresponding to a predetermined gradation level is applied from the source driver 220 to the source bus line S related to the pixel P.
- the voltage Vs is transmitted through the connection wiring 225x and the branch wirings 225a and 225b. For this reason, substantially the same voltage as the gate of the TFT 180b is applied to the gate of the TFT 180a.
- the voltage Vs supplied from the source driver 220 corresponding to an arbitrary gradation level is larger than the threshold voltages of the TFTs 180a and 180b. Therefore, the TFTs 180a and 180b are turned on, and the source driver 220 is electrically connected to the source wirings Sa and Sb via the connection wiring 225x and the branch wirings 225a and 225b.
- the threshold voltages of the TFTs 180a and 180b are different as described above. For this reason, even if the voltages of the branch wirings 225a and 225b are equal, the voltages of the source wirings Sa and Sb are different from each other.
- the voltage drop due to the TFT 180a is substantially equal to the threshold voltage Vta of the TFT 180a, and the voltage Vs ⁇ Vta is applied to the source line Sa.
- the voltage drop due to the TFT 180b is substantially equal to the threshold voltage Vtb of the TFT 180b, and the voltage Vs ⁇ Vtb is applied to the source line Sb.
- the applied voltage of the source wiring Sb is lower than the applied voltage of the source wiring Sa.
- the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124b is lower than that of the subpixel electrode 124a.
- a predetermined time is required until the charging of the liquid crystal capacitors and the auxiliary capacitors of the sub-pixels SPa and SPb is completed, and the voltage of the source driver 220 changes the voltage of the source wirings Sa and Sb.
- the voltages of the source lines Sa and Sb are changed to the source voltage. It is shown to change as the voltage of the driver 220 changes. As described above, the voltages of the source lines Sa and Sb are different, and thus the voltages of the sub-pixel electrodes 124a and 124b are different from each other.
- the voltage of the gate wiring G changes from high to low. Thereafter, the voltage of the source driver 220 changes. At this time, the voltage of the sub-pixel electrodes 124a and 124b is reduced by the pull-in voltage caused by the parasitic capacitance.
- the voltages of the subpixel electrodes 124a and 124b after the voltage drops due to the pull-in voltage are indicated by dotted lines, and the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124b is lower than that of the subpixel electrode 124a even after the voltage drop due to the pull-in voltage.
- the voltages of the subpixel electrodes 124a and 124b are different from each other, whereby the luminance of the subpixels SPa and SPb can be different from each other.
- the difference between the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124a and the voltage of the counter electrode 144 (that is, the effective voltage to the liquid crystal layer 160 in the subpixel SPa).
- the difference between the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124b and the voltage of the counter electrode 144 (that is, the effective voltage to the liquid crystal layer 160 in the subpixel SPb). Therefore, the subpixel SPa is a dark subpixel, and the subpixel SPb is a bright subpixel.
- the difference between the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124a and the voltage of the counter electrode 144 (that is, the effective voltage to the liquid crystal layer 160 in the subpixel SPa).
- the source signal output from the source driver 220 is transmitted to the branch wirings 225a and 225b via the connection wiring 225x, but the threshold voltages Vta and Vtb A different voltage from the source line Sa is applied to the source line Sb by the different TFTs 180a and 180b.
- the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124b is different from the voltage of the subpixel electrode 124a, and the subpixel SPb exhibits a luminance different from that of the subpixel SPa. In this way, multi-pixels are realized in the liquid crystal display device 100.
- the gate driver 210 only needs to have one gate output terminal corresponding to one row of pixels, and the source driver 220 has one corresponding to one column of pixels. Since only one source output terminal is required, relatively inexpensive drivers can be used as the gate driver 210 and the source driver 220.
- the threshold voltages of the TFTs 180a and 180b are different from each other here, the threshold voltages of the TFTs 130a and 130b may be substantially equal.
- the threshold voltages of the TFTs 130a and 130b are higher than the threshold voltages of the TFTs 180a and 180b.
- a gate voltage higher than the threshold voltages of the TFTs 180a and 180b is applied to the gate wiring G.
- the brightness of the subpixels adjacent in the row direction and the column direction in the liquid crystal display device 100 is inverted. Further, the magnitude relationship between the voltage of the pixel electrode 124 and the voltage of the counter electrode 144 is inverted in pixels adjacent in the row direction and the column direction.
- the effective voltages of the sub-pixels SPa and SPb are 6V and 4V, respectively.
- the subpixels SPa and SPb are a bright subpixel and a dark subpixel, respectively.
- the voltages of the subpixel electrodes 124a and 124b with reference to the voltage of the counter electrode 144 are ⁇ 4V
- the voltage is ⁇ 6V
- the effective voltages of the subpixels SPa and SPb are 4V and 6V
