Description

BARBECUE ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to a barbecue arrangement and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a barbecue and a cooking device for use thereon
Known barbecues in their simplest form usually comprise an open-topped container in which charcoal or the like is located and is ignited in situ and a grill plate in an open lattice form on which food is cooked which is placed over the container Such barbecues suffer from the disadvantages that the ignition of the charcoal or the like in the open-topped container can be a time consuming and inconvenient operation and the re- fuelling of the barbecue involves removal of the grill plate during which cooking has to cease In addition, the use of a cooking device in the form of a grill plate makes it necessary to periodically turn over each individual item being cooked by means of tongs or the like which is again a time consuming and inconvenient operation
The object of this invention is to provide a barbecue and a cooking device in which one or more of the above disadvantages of a conventional barbecue are alleviated
According to one aspect of this invention, a barbecue comprises an ignition section in which the fuel for the barbecue is ignited and a cooking section on which cooking takes place extending therefrom, wherein the ignited fuel can be transferred from the ignition section to the cooking section

The grill structure is, preferably, formed of two spaced-apart grill plates of open spaced-apart metal rod type of construction, the grill plates being pivotally connected to each other at one end to enable them to be opened for the insertion of food and then closed into overlapping relationship to trap the food to be cooked therebetween.
Preferably, the distance between the grill plates when disposed in overlapping relationship is adjustable.
Preferred embodiments of the inventions will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective front view from one side and above of a barbecue;
Figure 2 is a perspective rear view from said one side and above of the barbecue;
Figure 3 is a perspective front view from the other side and above of the barbecue; Figure 4 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of a cooking device in open position;
Figure 5 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of the cooking device in half closed position;
Figure 6 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of the cooking device in closed position;
Figure 7 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of the cooking device in a partially turned over position.
Figure 8 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of the cooking device in a further progression of the turning over position; and
Figure 9 is a perspective rear view from above and one side of the cooking device in a turned over position.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, a barbecue consists of an ignition section indicated generally at 10 and a cooking section indicated generally at 12. The ignition section 10 comprises a lower portion 14 in which a taper or fire lighter (not shown) can be positioned, an upper portion 16 in which charcoal or the like is loaded so as to rest upon a grate (not shown) which is capable of being removed or openable. The upper portion 16 has a flue member 18 extending upwardly from the top thereof to provide induced draft during the ignition of the charcoal or the like. The lower portion 14 has an openable door 20 which is openable to insert the taper or fire lighter, and the flue member 18 also has a door 22 which is openable to load the charcoal or the like into the upper portion 16. The upper portion 16 is provided with an internal open ended cylindrical container 24 in which the charcoal or the like is loaded and which rests upon the grate (not shown). The cooking section 12 consists of a metal plate 26 having upwardly turned edges 28 on three sides and the remaining side extends under or forms part of the base of the ignition section 10 so that the ignited charcoal or the like which has been dropped into the lower portion 14 by opening or removing the grate can be raked out of the lower portion 14 through an opening 30 and spread over the plate 26 to form a bed of ignited charcoal or the like on which cooking can take place. The barbecue is also provided with legs 32 at each corner and additional working or storage surfaces 34.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly Figures 4 to 9, a cooking device indicated generally at 36 consists of a frame 38 having two parallel spaced-apart side members 40 each having a longitudinally extending slot 42 on the inner surface thereof and downwardly extending leg portions at each end of the side members 40 of the frame 38 for supporting it on the metal plate 26 of the cooking section 12 of the barbecue. Each side member 40 at its centre has an upwardly extending member 44 having a longitudinally extending slot 46 formed therein. The cooking device 36 has a grill structure comprising two grill plates 48 and 50 each of which consists of a rectangular metal frame 52 and parallel spaced-apart rods 54 extending across the frame on which the food to be cooked is supported. Alternatively, the grill plates 48 and 50 are formed of metal castings or from sheet metal by a pressing operation and have a formation which can not only be equivalent to the parallel spaced-apart rods 54 but also in the form of a series of spaced- apart apertures such as holes or slots. The grill plates 48 and 50 are pivotally connected together at one end so as to be moveable from an open position as shown in Figure 4 through the position shown in Figure 5 to a closed position as shown in Figure 6. The pivotal connection consists of two spaced-apart metal plates 56 each having spaced-apart holes at said one end of the frame 52 of the grill plate 48 and hook members 58 mounted on the frame 52 of the grill plate 50, at the corresponding end thereof to the metal plates 56 on the grill plate 48, which are engageable in a selected one of the holes in the plates 56 to provide a pivotal connection and adjustment of the spacing between the grill plates 48 and 50 to accommodate the type of food which is to be cooked. At the opposite ends of the grill plates 48 and 50, the frame 52 of the grill plate 48 is provided with two projections 60 and the frame 52 of the grill plate 50 has a slidable rod 62 mounted thereon. The slidable rod 62 has a handle 64 at one end and spaced-apart L-shaped projections 66 spaced apart along its length each having two or more fingers for selectively engaging beneath the projections 60 to not only hold the grill plates 48 and 50 closed but also provide adjustment of the spacing between the grill plates 48 and 50 corresponding to the adjustment at the other end of the grill plates 48 and 50. Each side of the frame 52 of the grill plate 48 is provided with a first projecting lug 68 at its centre which is slidably and pivotally engaged in the associated slot 46 in the upwardly extending member 44 of the frame 38 and a similar projecting lug to the lug 68 is provided at the end of each side of the frame 52 of the grill plate 48 which is slidably and pivotally engaged in the associated slot 42 in the side member 40 of the frame 38. The grill structure with the grill plates 48 and 50 in the position shown in Figure 6 of the drawings is turned over to the position shown in Figure 9 of the drawings when the food therein has been cooked on one side so as to cook the other side thereof. The turning over of the grill structure is carried out by lifting the handle 64 which causes the projecting lugs 68 in the sides of the frame 52 of the grill plate 48 to move upwardly in the slot 46 in the upwardly extending member 46 and along the slot 42 in the side member 40 of the frame 38 first to the position shown in Figure 7, then to the position shown in Figure 8 to reach the turned over position shown in Figure 9 of the drawings.
It will be appreciated this is a quick and easy turning over operation to carry out and the provision of the slidable and pivotal lug and slot mechanisms making this possible are simple and robust with minimal moving parts and which are also easy to clean with, for example, a wire brush to maintain the smooth operation thereof.
It will be appreciated that although the cooking device is particularly suitable for use on a barbecue, it can be used on other heat sources without departing from the scope of the invention.
