Abstract

It is well know to package spreads (such as margarine and butter) in tubs with a lid. Such tubs are often rectangular with rounded corners. If it is desired to remove a neat slice of a spread from such a tub, it is almost impossible to do this and the slice usually needs to be "spooned" out. Also, when cooking, it is often desirable to remove a proportion of spread. The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem. For example it may be desirable to remove lOOg for a 50Og tub of spread. It is difficult to measure this when the spread is in the tub. According to the present invention there is provided a novel package comprising a container (2) having a base (3), side walls (4-7) extending up from the base, and an open face (8) to access contents of the container, part or all of one of said side walls (4) forming a flap having a lower edge (4A) hinged to the container and opposing side edges extending up for the lower edge, and said flap can be lowered from a first raised position to a second lowered position to gain access to the contents of the container through a side wall. A container of spread comprising the above defined novel package filled with spread.

Description

Packaging
The present invention relates a novel package.
For example it may be desirable to remove lOOg for a 50Og tub of spread. It is difficult to measure this when the spread is in the tub.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a novel package comprising a container having a base, side walls extending up from the base, and an open face to access contents of the container, part or all of one of said side walls forming a flap having a lower edge hinged to the container and opposing side edges extending up for the lower edge, and said flap can be lowered from a first raised position to a second lowered position to gain access to the contents of the container through a side wall. Preferably a lid is provided for the container open face.
Preferably said flap is hinged to the edge of the base.
Preferably the container has a generally rectangular base and four side walls.
Preferably the side edges of the flap are each connected to the container side walls with a folding gusset. The gusset may be a folding quadrant. Preferably the gusset when folded is retained by retaining means at the top edge of the side walls to maintain the flap in said first position. Preferably the retaining means is formed by a rolled edge on the top of the flap.
Preferably an inside face of the flap is formed with markings to allow a user to measure amounts of the contents of the container to be withdrawn.
Preferably the container is formed of plastics.
A container of spread comprising the above defined novel package filled with spread.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a container of spread with the flap in the first raised position, Figure 2 shows a container of spread with the flap in the first raised position with gussets folded forward,
Figure 3 shows the container with the flap part lowered towards the second position,
Figure 4 shows the container with the flap lowered to the second position, and
Figure 5 shows the container with the flap lowered to the second position with a slice of spread removed.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a novel package 1.
Package 1 comprises a plastics container 2 having a generally rectangular base 3, four generally rectangular side walls 4,5,6,7 extending up from the base, and an open face 8 to access contents of the container such as spread "X". Container 2 may have rounded corners.
Side wall 4 forms a flap having a lower edge 4A hinged to the edge of the base 3 by means of a flexible reduced thickness wall portion 9, and having opposing side edges 4B,4C extending up from the lower edge. Side wall 4 can be lowered from a first raised position (as shown in Figure 1) to a second lowered position (as shown in Figure 4) to gain access to the spread "X" in the container through a side wall. The side edges of the side wall 4 are each connected to the container side walls with a folding gusset 1OA, 1OB. Gussets 1OA, 1OB are a quadrant shape which can fold. Each gusset 1OA, 1OB when folded, as shown in Figure 1 , is retained by a rolled edge 4D at the top edge of the side wall 4 to maintain the side wall 4 in the first position.
In use, when it is desired to gain access to the spread "X", the gussets 10A5IOB are first folded forward as shown in Figure 2 whilst bending the gussets to avoid the rolled edge 4D. Side wall 4 is then lowered from the first position shown in Figures 1 and 2, to the second position as shown in Figure 4.
A knife can be used to cut a slice of spread. The knife can then be used to remove the slice a shown in Figure 5.
The inside face of the side wall 4 is formed with markings 1 IA, 1 1B,11C to allow a user to measure amounts of the contents of the container to be withdrawn. For example the amount of spread between two adjacent markings 1 1 A,l 1B,11C may represent lOOg of spread. The slice removed as shown in Figure 5 would thus be lOOg of spread.
The novel package of the invention may be made by any suitable means such as by vacuum forming or injection moulding, The novel package may be a disposable product pre-filled with spread, or it may be re-usable and be in the form of a "butter dish". A user could buy rectangular blocks of spread to fill the container. In this respect a re-usable package may have right angle corners to accommodate rectangular blocks of spread.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the flap may only be formed in part of the side wall. The container could be other than rectangular.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.

Claims

Claim 1 : According to the present invention there is provided a novel package comprising a container having a base, side walls extending up from the base, and an open face to access contents of the container, part or all of one of said side walls forming a flap having a lower edge hinged to the container and opposing side edges extending up for the lower edge, and said flap can be lowered from a first raised position to a second lowered position to gain access to the contents of the container through a side wall. Preferably a lid is provided for the container open face. Preferably said flap is hinged to the edge of the base. Preferably the container has a generally rectangular base and four side walls.
Claim 2: As in Claim 1 where there the lid is provided open, the side edges of the flap are each connected to the container side walls with a folding gusset. The gusset may be a folding quadrant. Preferably the gusset when folded is retained by retaining means at the top edge of the side walls to maintain the flap in said first position. Preferably the retaining means is formed by a rolled edge on the top of the flap.
Claim 3: As in Claim 2 an inside face of the flap is formed with markings to allow a user to measure amounts of the contents of the container to be withdrawn. An inside face of a side wall opposing said flap may be formed with markings to allow a user to measure amounts of the contents of the container to be withdrawn.
