Abstract

Mammatrophic breathing, i.e. the breathing equivalent to that one of the suckling during breast-feeding, is used to relieve stresses, give up smoking and treat some diseases. By simple changing the position of the tongue in the mouth it is possible to achieve physiological slowdown of breathing and relaxation which allow alleviating patient's condition and assuring remission of a disease, for instance, bronchial asthma. The method allows reaching higher cerebration and relaxation without such a harmful intermediate as cigarettes. The technique of using mammatrophic breathing is illustrated with an example of the author's case history. The method can be used unassisted to give up smoking, relieve stresses, anxiety, fatigue, attacks of bronchial asthma in grown-ups and children, pains, to treat various types of bronchitis, overweight, allergy, high blood pressure and other diseases as well as for comprehensive therapy under guidance of an attending doctor or an instructor in respiratory gymnastics.

Description

Method of Relief of Stresses, Giving up Smoking and Treatment of Diseases
with Mammatrophic Breathing
The Description of the Invention
Technical Field
The invention relates to the field of medicine and can be used to relieve stresses, smoking habit and treatment of diseases with deep breathing symptoms (bronchial asthma, different kinds of bronchitis, overweight, allergy, hyper blood pressure, etc.). The invention can be also used for relaxation as well as a breathing method in respiratory gymnastics.
Background Art
The method of shallow breathing for arresting attacks of bronchial asthma for the first time was described by Plato (1). Medicinal exercises which slow down breathing are employed in Hatha Yoga, Qigong, in many Eastern martial arts. For this purpose special postures, volitional efforts, counting breathing phases, closing one of the nostrils with a hand, etc. are also used.
At present "Method of volitional elimination of deep breathing" by K.P.Buteyko is widely used (2,6). This method requires regular monitoring one's breathing and willpower, shortening the inhalation phase up to a state of light, hardly appreciable air shortage. Corsets and the phenomenon of slow breathing with eyes raised up are also used for relaxation of breathing.
Besides artificial slow-down of breathing the physiological phenomenon of slow breathing with eyes raised up is known. The purpose of this phenomenon has not yet received scientific explanation. The author thinks it to be a stand-still (hiding) reflex, well-known in animal world, when a danger from above exists.
Works of Doctor Da Costa opened the study of causes of the efficiency of slow breathing when treating diseases. In 1871 Doctor Da Costa discovered the "Hyperventilation Syndrome
(HVS)" whereby deep breathing in a relaxed state caused dizziness and sometimes fainting (2).
Mechanism of slow breathing for treatment of diseases with the HVS was scientifically based by
K.P.Buteyko. Schematically it looks like that (3,4). Oxidizing processes of the cell need 2% of oxygen and 6.5% of carbon dioxide. However, the atmospheric air contains only 0.03% of CO2. The body itself produces lacking amount of CO2 through musculation and digestion (up to 7- S%.). The excess CO2 is exhaled by the lungs. With great exhalation of CO2 chemical reactions in cells decreased, blood and tissues Ph change, which lead to the exacerbation of the disease. By using the great amount of clinic material K.P.Buteyko has proved that the cause of big exhalation of CO2 is deep breathing that accompanies many diseases. It appears bronchial spasm, for instance, in asthma is a natural physiological response of the body to avoid the exhalation of CO2 with the aim to saturate blood and tissues with CO2 during a breathing pause. Similar mechanisms also start working during other diseases with deep breathing. Delayed breathing allows the body to avoid exhalation of OC2 in great amounts and normalize blood and tissue Ph. It results in the improvement of the condition of a patient.
A parallel mechanism of slow breathing is known when treating bronchial and pulmonary diseases as well as cardiovascular diseases. In those diseases higher blood pressure in pulmonary (small) circuit is often observed. Due to high pressure blood plasma is pushed through bronchial walls, edema of bronchi and sputum which narrow lumen in bronchi appear and cause heavy breathing, asthma, cardiac asthma, etc. Slow breathing decreases blood flow in the lungs, blood pressure drops to normal level and attacks of the disease stop (5).
A healthy man is known to have the following traditional types of breathing: clavicular, thoracic, ventral, mixed, and vocal (7).
Common knowledge is methods to relieve stresses by counting from one to ten, making five deep inhalations and exhalations, raising and lowering arms, closing eyes with hands, etc. They are proved by experience and give good results.
Disclosure of Invention
The object of the invention is the use of physiological mechanisms of slow down of breathing for elimination of imbalance of CO2 in the body, normalization of blood pressure in the pulmonary circuit, relief of stresses and help in stopping smoking. The mechanism used is mammatrophic type of breathing.
Principles and mechanisms of the method will be disclosed in terms of the author's case history. The first symptoms of bronchial asthma appeared in the author of the invention in 1984 after catching cold. In 1989, 1991 and at the beginning of 1999 the author was hospitalized in the clinic of the Institute of Immunology of the Ministry of Health of the USSR with a diagnosis: "Bronchial asthma, atopic asthma + bacterial asthma. Status asthmaticus. Allergic rhinopatia. Chronic obstructive bronchitis. Tracheal-broncbial dyskinesia. Emphysema of lungs. Pneumosclerosis. However, even after treatment asthma attacks caused by physical loads, cold, laughter, and sometimes without apparent reasons occurred.
In 2000 the author experienced a bronchial asthma attack during a banquet when he drank cocktail through a straw. Not wishing to draw attention to himself, the author decided to drink up his beverage and go to the cloakroom to take his inhaler. He had to drink up slowly, without opening his mouth, all the time setting the tip of his tongue against the end of the tube to keep the liquid in the small tube. But when the beverage finished the bronchial spasm was over. Being himself a physician, the author simulated a situation and came to a sudden conclusion. The cause of arresting an asthma attack was a special position of the tongue in his mouth when it was set against the straw. The same happened when pushing the tip of the tongue between teeth. In both positions the root of the tongue rose up and decreased air passage into the lungs; a part of respiratory muscles were blocked; movements of diaphragm were limited. It gave an impression that when the tip of the tongue is kept with teeth the diaphragm is held in its position. It resulted in involuntary slowdown of breathing. Breathing becomes quiet and automatically changes over to a new algorithm of inhalation, pause, exhalation.
Automatic change-over of breathing to another algorithm indicated to the fact that such breathing is usual for the organism and used for some purpose. Though it is unknown for a grown-up, it is used in childhood, for instance, during breast-feeding. Really, when breastfeeding the tongue of a suckling makes similar movements, pressing with the tip of his tongue to the lactiferous sinus (sinus lactiferum) of the mother's breast to press out milk. The protective mechanism of breathing slowdown with relaxation and a special algorithm was specifically created by nature to prevent the suckling from choking with milk. Usually such breathing was described in literature in passing as the breathing during feeding the suckling; some of its characteristics (frequency, timbre, etc.) were measured. However, the process appears to be of more global character. Quieter breathing appeared to be only a part of the protective mechanism during liquid taking. Availability of a special reflex of relaxation and breathing algorithm, change-over mechanisms and large-scale rearrangement of the respiratory system make it one more type of breathing. Unique are the preservation of infant breathing by the grown-up and the mechanism of changing over to it by changing the position of the tongue. As the first drinking liquid of the man is breast milk and the first source of that liquid is the breast, the author for convenience called this type of breathing and respective reflex 'mammatrophic' (from Latin mamma- breast, nipple and Greek trophe - feeding).
In relief of stresses, giving up smoking and treatment of diseases two aspects ensuring mammatrophic breathing are used: slowdown of breathing (used in our case for the enrichment of blood and tissues with CO2) and the relaxation phenomenon when an object resembling a mother's teat is placed between lips (in our case one's own tongue is used). This phenomenon is mainly caused by secretion of endorphines (internal morphines) when certain receptors of lips and tongue are irritated. The action of endorphines, or "pleasure hormones", is well-known: they relieve stress and pain, cause pleasure and relaxation, normalize arterial blood pressure, breathing frequency, function of the kidneys and the digestive tract (8). Such regulation stimulates thirst of the suckling for the mother's nipple and provides safe and quiet feeding of the suckling. As relate to grown-ups, the same mechanism under the impact of different irritants relieves stress and normalizes health problems. Sometimes the need to place some objects between lips for relaxation is so strong that it is very difficult to wean many children from baby's dummy for a long time, regardless whether they suck it or simply hold in their mouth. Relaxation caused by objects between lips and sucking appears unconsciously but it is known to everybody - pleasure and relaxation of a child when he takes breast or baby's dummy into his mouth. In older age it is sucking fingers and gnawing pencils during lessons. In grown-up state it is a feeling of pleasure and relaxation when taking (sucking) a smoking pipe or a cigarette; relaxation when nibbling sunflower seeds and sucking lollipops (the tongue makes rhythmic mammatrophic movements); pleasure and relaxation when drinking beverages through a bottle neck and a cocktail straw, pleasure from kisses, etc. Just so modern neurology describes the way from the sucking reflex to a smoking habit (9). Mammatrophic breathing is an unknown chain in the mechanism of the formation and steadiness of this habit. By taking a smoking pipe, a cigar or a cigarette, a grown-up man not only enjoys himself like a child from a baby's dummy. From that moment his breathing in a reflex way changes over to mamatrophic type (to provide one of the most important tasks of milk taking); breathing becomes slow, smooth, soothing and relaxation comes. In such a state it is easier for a grown-up to ponder and take important decisions. The phenomenon of "lucid state of mind" with slow breathing and relaxation is described in all ancient teachings. Those are the main conditions of meditation. The above examples show that all aspects of mammatrophic breathing remain and function in the grown-up. Three components have an important part in the formation of the smoking habit: 1) deviant behavior (a desire to be distinguished, an image problem, etc); 2) need in narcotic feelings
(nicotine addiction) 3) need in activation of cerebration and relaxation. Usually, at first deviant behavior prevails (the desire to look like a grown-up, etc.), then, in the process of smoking other components comes.
Specific methods for giving up smoking have been developed for each group of smoking people. Smoking people with deviation problems need consultations of a psychologist; people with distinct nicotine dependence (smoking a lot of cigarettes or strong tobacco) need advice of an expert in drug abuse. Mammatrophic breathing is more orientated to the third group of smoking people for whom consuming properties of smoking are important Usually they are people of mental and manual work for whom smoking is a method to increase brain activity or relieve tension (to relax). Smoking a cigarette, they actually use resources of mammatrophic breathing ("lucid state of mind" and relaxation) without knowing about that. Usually their nicotine dependence manifests itself weakly (nicotine plasters do not suppress the desire take a cigarette into the mouth); however, compensatory actions accompanied by mammatrophic breathing: smoking cigarettes without nicotine (placebo), keeping in mouth unlit cigarettes, cigars or a smoking pipe, nibbling sunflower seeds, sucking sugar candies, chewing gum, etc. give rise to alleviation. Adoption of mammatropic breathing for those people is a real possibility to get rid of a harmful intermediate which is cigarettes. It should be understood that nicotine in cigarettes amplified the action of mammatrophic breathing and had light narcotic effect. Therefore, time is needed to free oneself from narcotic action of nicotine and more often use niamatrophic breathing in order to restore cerebration and relaxation to the initial level without cigarettes.
The use of mammatrophic breathing helped the author in asthma treatment. Asthma attacks stopped during the first two months. Then the disease passed into a long remission which lasted almost 9 years until the year of 2009. There was no any hospitalization connected with asthma. Life returned to normal, physical loads and cold do not cause a asthma spasm. But it is not full recovery. In condition of dustiness and after catching cold heavy breathing is observed.
In 2005 after catching cold a respiratory function test found latent bronchospasm. If the author strengthened his respiratory system, elimination of causes and consequences of the disease, it would be possible to give up medicines completely and the state of his health would be better. Methods of using mammatrophic breathing are simple and based on own experience of the author.
1. The tongue can be placed in the mouth in any position which would correspond to amplitude of the movement of the back or tip of the tongue during breast- feeding. To place properly, from physiological point of view, the tip of the tongue between teeth when the mouth is closed or to keep the tip of the tongue between lips. It is the position from where a suckling presses on the breast with his tongue (milk is injected into his mouth, the mechanism for the protection of breathing and relaxation is automatically activated). The tongue can be also turned under upper or lower lip, upward or backward, to set the bent tip of the tongue against the teeth arcade, etc. In a lying position it is convenient to set the tongue against the upper row of teeth. Convenience of the position depends on the anatomy of the mouth cavity. It is desirable not to press the tongue with teeth and not to plug tubes with it, it can be painful. In other cases sensitivity of the tip of the tongue will change and discomfort disappear in a few days. To check the right position, it is necessary to return the tongue to the usual position to feel difference in breathing. It is possible to choose the main position of the tongue (with the heaviest breathing) and the position of the tongue the least noticeable from outside. It is possible to set the tongue to some objects pushed into the mouth to a certain depth - the thumb (good help during asthma attacks), pencil, pen, the side of spectacles, etc. It is possible to raise up the tongue to the mammatrophic position and lay under it various things (for example, a date etc.).
2. When one is ill, it is necessary to coordinate the speed of movement with the rhythm of mammatrpohic breathing up to a feeling of light air shortage. To change over to this kind of breathing during stresses. To use periodically mammatrophic breathing at home, during office hours, in transport, in the morning after waking up and in the evening before going to bed. To breathe only through the nose. One must clearly realize that substantial loss of CO2 (hyperventilation of the lungs) can lead to exacerbation of the disease; to change over automatically to mammtrophic breathing after great loss of CO2 (sneezing, cough, gaping, shouting, running, swimming, etc).
3. One should not renounce the use of medicine, especially at the initial period of treatment.
The author realized that it is easier to endure an asthma attack thanks to mammatrophic breathing, but protecting his heart, he tried not to prolong the attack and relieved a asthma attack and heavy breathing with an inhaler. But on the other hand, using mammatrophic breathing between attacks, he quickly learned to avoid asthma attacks. Thus, gradually the need for inhalations to relieve a asthma attack was reduced.
4. In a lying position and in case of weak health medicinal effect of mammatrophic breathing decreases. It is connected with the fact that in reclining position muscles, one of the sources of CO2 generation, do not function. A weak organism has poor digestion — the second source of CO2 generation. In both cases CO2 deficiency increases. That is one of the causes of asthma attacks in one's sleep. In those cases and at the time of asthma spasm compulsory rise in CO2 level in blood is needed: to delay from time to time breathing, avoiding to make a deep inhalations; to do simple physical exercises so that muscles would generate CO2 (non-abrupt movements with arms, pelvis, head, bendover of body, etc.) One should understand the mechanism of the process and wait for higher CO2 content in blood to alleviate the state or relieve the attack. If there is no rhinitis, it is possible to learn to fall in sleep with this kind of breathing and maintain the required position of the tongue in one's sleep. In those cases night attacks of asthma do not come.
5. With bronchitis and asthma heavy breathing is often caused by viscous sputum which decreases the lumen of bronchi. Mammatrophic breathing lowers pulmonary edema, secretion of sputum stops but sputum and heavy breathing remain. To remove sputum, the author often drank hot drinks in inclined position to warm up bronchi and physical exercises with arms and shoulders for aggregation of sputum and removal of it with spitting.
Mistakes made in using mammatrophic breathing
1. One must not be engaged in self-treatment. It is possible to relieve stress and single symptoms of the disease by oneself but it is possible to overcome the disease only in cooperation with an attending doctor. One must keep in mind that before the beginning and in the course of treatment test and medical control of the condition of health is required.
2. One must not advise children to use always the same saving position of the tongue. It can lead to malocclusion. It is necessary to tell a child about alternative tongue positions. Advantageous Effects
The method to relieve stresses, give up smoking and treat diseases with mammatrophic breathing has the following advantages:
The method is absolutely physiologic and hence safe for the organism. The slowdown of breathing is automatically activated and deactivated in a reflex way. The slowdown of breathing goes not under the compulsion of a man but under the control of the central nervous system. The slowdown is comprehensive and accompanied by coordinated work of respiratory muscles, relaxation, change in breathing algorithm.
Unlike the similar physiological phenomenon of raising up eyes, during mammatrophic breathing one can walk and drive. The phenomenon of raising up eyes causes some alertness (as a consequence of reflex of rigidity, limited field of view and movements, eyes discomfort, etc.), mammatrophic breathing, on the contrary, is accompanied by pleasant relaxation.
Mammatrophic breathing makes respiratory process automatic according to physical and physiological features of specific organism: no need in special postures, counting breathing phases, willful efforts, closing one of the nostrils, etc.
Many techniques are known to be aimed at creating a new kind of breathing in patients. For instance, patients of K.P.Buteyko are notable for their special breathing habit. It indicates to a good school of consolidation of breathing habits. Mammatrophic breathing is a part of normal human physiology, it does not need consolidation of breathing habits, services of a new kind of breathing and does not leave any external consequences of treatment.
When treating with known methods of breathing slowdown, relaxation effect is often observed, it is caused by action of carbon dioxide on smooth muscles (2). Treatment with mammatrophic breathing causes effect of double relaxation. It is somatic relaxation due to carbon dioxide (relieving spasms) and psycho-endocrine relaxation due to the tongue or an object between lips. It means that it is easier to carry out prevention and faster to conduct treatment of such diseases as asthma spasm and migraine, stress, panic, anxiety, fear, fatigue, smoking, etc.
- Mammatrophic breathing allows to get rid of thirst for smoking faster. Knowing the cause of the habit and the mechanism of mammatrophic breathing, the man can diversify methods to get rid of smoking without limitations (sugar candies provoke caries, a cigarette between teeth can not be tolerated in public places, etc.). In many cases stress situations provoke a desire to smoke. It is possible to suppress that desire to relieve stress at the proper time. The method gives a chance to use curing abilities of own body before taking a decision to use medicines with possible side effects.
- Mammatrophic breathing is simple in relieving stresses: no need to count mentally, inhale and exhale deeply, raise up arms, close eyes with hands, etc. It is enough to make an unnoticeable change of the position of the tongue in the mouth. If somebody changes over to mammatrophic breathing before listening to a bad news, consequences of a stress will be minimized.
Industrial Applicability
Stress and smoking are serious problems of the 21-st century. Often people find themselves in extreme situations without any medicines. Mammatrophic breathing is a medicine which is always with you. The method can be easily used unassisted to relieve stresses, pains, various health problems, asthma attacks, for stop smoking, etc. Serious treatment with mammatrophic breathing requires comprehensive therapy under the guidance of an attending doctor or an instructor in respiratory gymnastics.
