Definitions
- This invention belongs to the field of technologies for the use of solar energy for the production of electricity, classified among high-concentration solar thermal systems, within the framework of the technologies of central tower receiver with heliostat field.
- the invention describes both the design and operating system of the receiver, which uses natural circulation as a method of feeding the working fluid into the system.
- the Solar Concentration Systems are used to increase the density of the solar radiation flow so that the temperatures reached by the working fluid are those required for its use in industrial processes and in electric power generation processes.
- the Central Tower Receiver Systems where the solar radiation is concentrated by the use of heliostats in a receiver located in the upper part of a tower (in the focus of the optical system) and where it is transformed into energy thermal through the absorption of heat by the working fluid.
- This invention will propose the use of natural circulation together with a new design of components that helps to reduce the pressure losses of the circuit, as an alternative to increase the efficiency of the system. Its implementation will allow the recirculation of the fluid to be carried out without the use of pumps.
- the proposed innovation seeks to take advantage of one of the physical properties of the working fluid (density) in the operating conditions that, under a suitable configuration of the circuit components (equipment elevations, tube lengths and diameters), can give rise to to the phenomenon of natural circulation.
- the introduction of this improvement makes the use of technology more feasible at commercial production levels since it is possible to recirculate water through a closed circuit, without the need for pumps, decreasing self-consumption of the plant (electrical consumption of auxiliary components) and increasing the net electricity production of the same.
- the natural circulation is based on the physical fact that, by decreasing the density of a fluid, it tends to rise.
- a hot bulb is available, in a lower zone (receiver) and a cold bulb in an upper zone (reboiler)
- a natural circulation is achieved between the two bulbs, and the recirculation pumps can be eliminated.
- These pumps can be removed as long as the recirculation flow is sufficient to cool the receiver.
- the higher the cold focus with respect to the hot one the higher the recirculation flow.
- the smaller the load loss of the system the greater the recirculation flow; The above can be achieved by increasing the diameters or passage areas of the pipes in such a way that natural circulation is favored.
- the feed water is introduced into the boiler, this is done in order to keep the cold focus above the hot spot and far enough away from it, so that the water-steam flow that rises through the receiver and reaches the boiler is high enough to maintain the flow of the fluid in the circuit by natural circulation. That is why the described arrangement of the equipment and the input current to the fluid circuit favors the natural circulation and allows dispensing with the pumps once the recirculation flow conditions necessary for this phenomenon to take place.
- the water that flows down from the boiler flows through the receiver through natural circulation, where the change of phase to saturated steam occurs due to the incident power from the heliostats; to the upper part of the receiver a saturated vapor-water mixture, enriched in steam, flows back to the boiler where the phase separation takes place.
- the system described above is the design basis of the recirculation circuit of the solar receiver with natural recirculation.
- the receiver consists of the following parts:
- the receiver system is composed of a series of panels constituted by several vertically arranged tubes with a suitable configuration to maximize the reception of radiation reflected by the field of heliostats
- the tubes have been designed in such a way that their Diameters (greater than those used in these devices currently), favor the natural circulation of the fluid taking into account the dimensions of the receiver and its spatial arrangement. This minimizes load losses.
- these tubes have fins that facilitate the connection between them and prevent the passage of radiation from the heliostats to the isolation located in the rear part of the receiver that could cause damage to it; these fins are of the minimum possible size, in order to avoid hot spots in the structure of the receiver since they are not refrigerated.
- Downpipes they connect the boiler with the lower manifolds of the receiver (the collector being the pipe that distributes the recirculation water to the different tubes of the receiver). To avoid high load losses, these pipes have been designed with a diameter greater than that of current solar receivers, in order to promote natural circulation.
- the circuit of the receiver described above has a mixed control system implemented by computer and which governs a series of valves so that the optimum conditions of pressure, temperature and recirculation flow are maintained in the circuit, required for the natural circulation take place in the system. It has level, temperature and pressure gauges in the boiler; control valve) of the feed water stream to the boiler; temperature and heat flow sensors in the receiver; flow meters and control valves in the downpipes.
