Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating a coupling unit (23) for improved coupling of microwaves in a microwave reactor (24) for the pyrolysis of materials comprising carbon, wherein the coupling unit (23) has at least one disc-shaped element (12) that is transparent for microwaves and that separates the interior space (16) from the exterior space (17) of the microwave reactor (24) in an installed state of the coupling unit (23) and that is inserted in a holder (2, 3) designed such that it forms a recess (19) on the side facing the interior space (16) of the microwave reactor (24) together with the disc-shaped (12) element and the coupling unit (23) has a gas supply (8, 9, 10, 13) that leads to the interior space (16) of the microwave reactor (24), wherein gas is released into the recess (19) so that the recess (19) operates as a small reactor in that pyrolysis products from the microwave reactor (24) are converted into innocuous substances that are not deposited on the disc-shaped element(s) (12).
