Definitions
- the present invention relates to infrared-absorbing inks and security elements and security products containing such security elements.
- security products are provided with security elements, also called security features, to protect against counterfeiting.
- visible security elements are used, which can be detected without technical aids with the naked eye, e.g. Angle-dependent colors, but also hidden elements that can not be detected without technical aids.
- visible and hidden security elements are shared.
- Invisible security features play a major role in machine detection and capture of value and ID documents. Examples of this are the recognition of banknotes in ATMs or the automatic detection and authenticity of ID cards using testers. Such devices use electrical or magnetic properties or even hidden optical effects, e.g. UV or IR absorption or luminescence in different wavelength ranges.
- GB 1534403 describes a security product which is printed with two colors which appear identical in the visible spectral range and differ in their IR absorption. As an IR absorber soot is used. A disadvantage of this process is the black color of carbon black, which causes the ink to gray, especially at higher carbon black concentrations. The method is therefore limited useful.
- WO 98/28374 describes a printing ink for security elements with graphite as IR-absorbing additive.
- graphite By using graphite, the desired color of the printed image should be less affected than by soot. Nevertheless, with red or orange base colors, as stated in the examples of WO 98/28374, only "dirty" Obtained shades. Bright colors or even transparent colors with good IR absorption are not feasible.
- EP 1790701 describes a printing ink for steel intaglio printing which contains 5-70% by weight of a transition metal compound as IR-absorbing
- the IR-absorbing component has to be added in relatively high concentrations.
- a first subject of the invention is thus an infrared-absorbing printing ink containing at least one boride, which absorbs radiation in the wavelength range from 800 to 2500 nm.
- infrared images with good contrast and high authenticity can be obtained, which have no or only a very low intrinsic color and are preferably well suited as a hidden security element.
- infrared-absorbing inks for the purposes of the invention, both colorant-containing and colorant-free inks, such. B. flexographic, gravure and offset inks, and inks, such. As ink-jet inks to understand.
- infrared-absorbing, IR-absorbing or infrared-absorbing agents are referred to in the present invention, those materials that absorb radiation in the wavelength range of 800 - 2500 nm (near infrared / NIR).
- the infrared-absorbing printing ink is preferably recognizable by means of an IR detector or an IR camera. Such detectors and cameras are known to those skilled in the art and are commercially available.
- the printing ink according to the invention preferably has a strong absorption in the wavelength range from 800 to 1500 nm.
- the printing ink of the invention preferably exhibits a high transparency for visible light (380-780 nm). For the human eye, it is thus preferably invisible.
- the component of the present inks essential to the invention is at least one boride which absorbs radiation in the wavelength range from 800 to 2500 nm and which is used as the infrared absorber of the printing ink.
- Borides are, as known to those skilled in the art, non-stoichiometric compounds of boron and a metal. You can powder metallurgically or by reaction of the metal oxides with
- Boron carbide are produced.
- borides according to the invention are z.
- commercially available compounds such as aluminum boride, magnesium boride, europium boride, calcium boride, lanthanum boride, cerium boride, samarium boride, yttrium boride, molybdenum boride, silicon boride, zirconium boride, titanium boride, vanadium boride or chromium bromide or mixtures thereof.
- lanthanum hexaboride (LaB 6 ), cerium hexaboride (CeB 6 ), samarium hexaboride (SmB 6 ), yttrium hexaboride (YB 6 ), molybdenum boride (Mo 2 B 5 ), silicon hexaboride (SiB 6 ), silicon tetraboride (SiB 4 ), zirconium diboride (ZrB 2 ) , Titanium boride (TiB 2 ), vanadium boride (VB 2 ) or chromium diboride (CrB 2 ) or mixtures thereof are suitable.
- Hexaborides are preferably used. Particularly preferred is the lanthanum hexaboride (LaB 6 ).
- a particular advantage of the borides according to the invention is that they have a strong absorption in the wavelength range from 800 to 2500 nm, preferably from 800 to 1500 nm, and no or only a small intrinsic color.
- the commercially available borides usually have mean particle sizes significantly> 50 microns, so that they are before use as an IR absorber in printing inks with a suitable grinding machine, e.g. a bead mill, ball mill or air jet mill, must be milled to the appropriate particle sizes.
- a suitable grinding machine e.g. a bead mill, ball mill or air jet mill
- the grinding is carried out in aqueous suspensions.
- the preferred grinding process for the Feinstvermahlung is grinding in the bead mill. This allows the borides to be ground in suspension up to average particle sizes of 50 nm.
- the grinding is preferably carried out in aqueous suspension in the presence of dispersing aids.
- the aqueous suspensions can be added directly to aqueous printing inks.
- the borides can be finely ground in a solvent or solvent system suitable for the printing ink and then added to the printing ink.
- a solvent or solvent system suitable for the printing ink it is also possible to convert the finely ground borides from the aqueous suspension into a hydrophobic preparation with the aid of suitable emulsifiers or protective colloids.
