Abstract

The invention relates to methods and compositions for the post-translational modification of extracellular signalling proteins by dietary phytochemicals and related compounds, including,, but not limited to one or more of the following phytochemicals: sulforaphane, erucin, sativin, iberin, β-phenylethylisothiocyanate (PE-ITC)5 3- methylthiopropyl isothiocyanate. The invention further relates to assays for determining suitable phytochemicals for modifying extracellular signalling proteins. In addition the present invention relates to use of combinations of the phytochemicals isothiocyanataes and procyanidins, as well as methods of modifying plants to increase the levels of 3-methylthiopropyl glucosinolate therein.
