- the illumination and imaging beam path is typically made coaxial, e.g. the circular surface of the pupil is divided into an outer annular surface (1) for illumination and a circular central surface (2) for the reception.
- this coaxial division of the available pupil opening requires that the eye with respect to the optical axis of the Imaging device must be positioned very accurately. This is especially important if the image is to be taken without any dilatation of the pupil, since then the pupil diameter can be less than 4 mm. If the pupil diameter is small, the illumination ring must be positioned exactly centrically in the pupil, otherwise only part of the light will be in the eye and the image will be correspondingly less bright or even unusable. This lateral offset also allows reflexes from the cornea to enter the camera and outshine the light from the fundus.
