Abstract
A process for carbon microfiber yarn production which can eliminate material property unevenness; a substrate for carbon microfiber formation which is for use in the process; and a carbon microfiber yarn. The process for carbon microfiber production comprises forming a catalyst layer on a substrate, growing a mass of carbon microfibers on the substrate having the catalyst layer by chemical vapor deposition, and continuously drawing out the carbon microfibers from the mass of carbon microfibers to form a carbon microfiber yarn. Non-drawing-out areas where the carbon microfibers cannot be drawn out are formed so that regions for drawing out carbon microfibers from the mass of carbon microfibers are arranged according to a given pattern.
