Abstract

A water flow energy converter 1, comprising: a support member 4 on which energy conversion means 3 are mounted; an upright shaft 5 rotateably mounted to said support and coupled to said energy conversion means 3 to drive said energy conversion means 3; a frame 6 mounted on said shaft 5 and provided to drive said shaft 5 in a predetermined rotational direction when placed in a water flow, said frame 6 being provided with flaps 7 pivotally mounted thereon about a rotation axis 8 forming an angle of less than 40 degrees with a plane perpendicular to said shaft 5, said flaps 7 being pivotable between a lying non-flow-capturing position and an upright flow-capturing position wherein they urge said frame 6 in the rotation direction as a result of the force of said water flow exerted onto the upright flap; wherein each flap 7 has an average density between 1200 kg/m3 and 800 kg/m3.
