Abstract

Provided are a joining method and a joined structure manufacturing method, which can improve the gas-tightness and the water-tightness of a joined metal member. The joining method frictionally stirs a joined metal member (1), which is formed by causing a first metal member (1a) and a second metal member (1b) to abut against each other. The joining method comprises a first joining step of frictionally stirring the front surface (A) of the joined metal member (1) at the abutting part (J1) between the first metal member (1a) and the second metal member (1b), a second joining step of frictionally stirring the back surface (B) of the jointed metal member (1) at the abutting portion (J1), and a side welding step of welding the side surface of the joined metal member (1) at the abutting portion (J1). The joining method is characterized in that the side welding step seals up the unplasticized region between a surface-side plasticized region (W1) formed during the first joining step and a back-side plasticized region (W2) formed during the second joining step, with weld metal (T).
