Abstract

This invention provides an Nb3Sn superconducting wire rod produced by an internal diffusion process, which is superior to conventional Nb3Sn superconducting wire rods produced by a bronze process in both superconducting properties and strength by virtue of mechanical strength in the Nb3Sn superconducting wire rod, produced by an internal diffusion process, enhanced for satisfactorily developing excellent superconducting properties possessed by the Nb3Sn superconducting wire rod produced by an internal diffusion process, and a precursor thereof. The Nb3Sn superconducting wire rod comprises a multielement wire. In the multielement wire, an Sn or Sn-base alloy core is disposed on its center. A Cu or Cu-base alloy matrix, and a bundle of a plurality of monoelement wires constituted by disposing a plurality of an Nb or Nb-base alloy filaments are disposed on the circumference of the Sn or Sn-base alloy core. A part of the monoelement wires is replaced by a reinforcing element wire comprising a rod-like reinforcing member formed of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Nb, Ta, Ti, W, Mo, and Hf or their alloys and embedded in Cu or a Cu-base alloy. The proportion of the cross-sectional area of the rod-like reinforcing member is 2 to 25% based on the total cross-sectional area of the wire rod.
