Abstract

　色分離合成プリズムと、色分離合成プリズムの底辺に対向して配置された複数の反射型の空間光変調器と、を有し、色分離合成プリズムを構成する第１の接合プリズムの辺うち第２の接合プリズムが対向配置されない辺である面から入射された照明光を、空間光変調器が設けられたプリズムの底辺の法線に対して少なくとも１度以上の入射角度を有する光線として入射させると共に空間光変調器から反射される変調光のうちプリズムの底辺の法線方向に出射される変調光が色合成プリズム内を通過した後に合成光として照明光が入射された面と同一面から出射し、この出射光によって画像表示を行い、光学的配置が容易であり、且つ形状を小型化することが可能な投射型表示装置を提供する。
