  • the applicant's application no. WO 2006089819 describes a lid structure for a container that is easy to open by hand and which may be re-closed by simple application of downward pressure on the lid once aligned with the container.
  • the lid structure described in this application comprises a metal disc terminating in a peripheral annulus and a plastics ring, which is snap fitted around the periphery of the metal disc.
  • the lid is placed onto a container filled with product and a tool expands the lid annulus and the adjacent container to form a mutually cooperating bead or beads. This creates "snap beads" to secure the lid structure on the container and thereby maintain the "freshness" of the product.
  • a problem with this arrangement is that whilst the container / lid combination is able to withstand every day abuse (such as minor denting etc.) it is not able to meet the more rigorous requirements required by the UN for the carriage of dangerous goods, such as drop tests for example.
  • FR 1489081 A (KARL HUBER BLECHWARENFABRIK FA) 03.11.1967 describes a container/lid combination resistant to shock or impact.
  • the lid (3) is held in place on the container (2) by a separate tightening ring (1).
  • the lower arm (6) of the tightening ring holds the lid in place on the container by hooking underneath the outer curl (13) of the container.
  • the tightening ring is then firmly locked into place on the container when the tightening ring is deformed such that it presses onto the top of the outside curl (12) of the lid.
  • a disadvantage of this arrangement is that the lid is not irreversibly attached to the tightening ring, which means that the container/lid package is unlikely to be able to meet the stringent demands placed on it by current legislation.
  • the modified container includes a lid with a metal disc having a centre panel, a generally U-shaped channel and an outer wall terminating in an outwardly extending annulus at its free edge, and a plastic ring having an inwardly extending annular shoulder and a peripheral skirt depending from the shoulder, the skirt having an inwardly extending lug to locate the metal disc, characterised in that the inner profile of the plastic ring includes a recess adjacent to the free edge of the metal disc, and the outwardly extending annulus defines a locking structure adapted to engage in the recess to lock the metal disc into the plastic ring.
  • the recess may be of any shape that is able to accommodate the locking structure. As such the U-shaped contour at the free edge of the locking structure can project upwardly, downwardly or in any other direction suitable to engage with the recess.
  • Sealing compound is applied onto part of the outer wall of the U-shaped channel.
  • the lid structure is then assembled by expanding the internal diameter of the plastic ring using an expansion tool and locating the metal disc inside the plastic ring, which is allowed to relax trapping the metal disc inside. Expansion of the plastic ring must be carefully controlled to ensure that the ring undergoes elastic deformation only and thereby returns to its original size and shape once the expansion tooling relaxes. At this stage, the metal disc is trapped in the plastic ring, but is not irreversibly secured therein.
  • the lid structure is then placed over a complimentary can body. Downward pressure is applied to force the lid structure downwardly onto the can body so that the sealing compound forms a seal between the lid and the can body.
  • the external diameter of the tooling expands forcing the outer wall of the U-shaped channel in the lid structure and an upper portion of the associated can body to expand. This locally expands the diameter of the lid and the can body to maintain the seal therebetween. Expansion of the U-shaped channel of the lid structure increases the external diameter of the metal disc, forcing the locking structure to irreversibly engage in the recess provided on the internal profile of the plastic ring.
  • the profile of the expanded section of the lid structure and upper portion of the metal can body secures the two together much more firmly than the "snap - bead" arrangement provided in WO 2006089819 .
  • the plastic ring and central metal disc are irreversibly secured together by the locking structure and thus, whilst the expanded section is more difficult to prise apart than in the packages described in the prior art, the force applied to the appropriate portion of the plastic ring is more efficiently transferred to the metal disc due to the lock provided therebetween.
  • wing structures may be provided on the plastic ring adjacent to any tamper evident feature to assist a user opening the container by hand.
  • the wing structures may by adapted to allow the insertion of a tool and thereby allow a user to apply the necessary force.
  • Figures 1a - 1d show the expansion of the plastic ring, prior to insertion of the metal disc.
  • Figure 2 shows a side view of the assembled lid structure according to the invention.
  • Figure 3 shows a side section view through a package consisting of a can body and a lid structure of the invention prior to expansion and securing.

  • a plastic ring 2 and metal disc 20 are prepared as previously described.
  • Tooling 60 is designed to expand the external diameter of the plastic ring 5 (as illustrated in Figures 1a and 1 b).
  • a prepared metal disc 20 with part of the outer wall 23 filled with compound 10 is lowered onto tooling 60 (as illustrated in Figure 1c).
  • the expanded plastic ring 2 is then raised by tooling 65 to the level of the metal disc 20 (as illustrated in Figure 1d) and tooling 60 contracts to allow the plastic ring 2 to encapsulate the free edge of the metal disc 20.
  • the lid structure manufactured as described above comprises a metal disc 20 (not shown) and a plastic ring 2 having a lug portion 6 and two wing structures 5 adjacent to a tamper evident feature (not shown).
  • the lid structure is then placed on a can body 30 and the metal disc 20 is locked irreversibly into the lug portion 6 of the plastic ring 2 (as shown in figures 3 and 4)
  • the lid structure comprising plastic ring 2 and metal disc 20 is loosely fastened on a can body 30, with the lug portion 6 loosely aligned with a curl 31 at the open end of the can body 30.
  • Tooling 40 is then lowered onto the lid structure compressing the sealing compound 10.
  • a portion 41 of the tooling 40 extends into the U-shaped channel 22. Whilst the pressure is maintained, tooling 40 expands against a support 50 (as shown in Figure 4).
  • the portion 41 presses against the outer wall 23 of the U-shaped channel 22 and distorts both the U-shaped channel 22 and the sidewall of the can body 30.
  • the locking structure 25 is pressed into the recess 7 in the plastic ring 2, locking the metal disc 20 and the plastic ring 2 securely together. In this way the lid structure 2, 20 and can body 30 are fastened securely together.
  • Figure 5a illustrates the finished can body 30 and lid structure 2, 20, which are now fastened securely together.
  • Figures 5b - 5 c illustrate the method of breaking the seal between the can body 30 and lid structure 2, 20 using a tool 70.
  • the tool 70 is slotted into a hole in the wing structure 5.
  • the tool 70 is then used as a lever to lift / pivot the wing structures about the curl 31 on the can body 30.
  • this causes the lug 6 on the plastic ring 2 to release the curl 31 on the can body 30 and thereafter the lid structure 2, 20 may be simply lifted off the can body 30 by hand.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un bidon de peinture comprenant une structure de couvercle (2, 10) ayant un anneau en plastique (2) et un disque en métal central (20) qui est fixé au corps de bidon (30) et qui est expansé afin de fermement fixer la structure de couvercle (2, 10) au corps de bidon (30) de sorte à ce que l'emballage de contenant puisse satisfaire à la législation concernant le transport des matières dangereuses. Le disque en métal (20) présente un canal en forme de U périphérique (22) et une structure de verrouillage (25) autour de son bord périphérique libre. L'anneau en plastique (2) inclut un évidement (7) dans lequel la structure de verrouillage (25) est fermement fixée.
