Description

Title: "Modular structure for covering surfaces, such as floors, pavements, walls and ceilings"
* * * * . *
The present invention relates to a modular structure for covering surfaces, such as floors, walls and ceilings, more in particular a modular structure for covering surfaces composed of tiles made of material suitable for the purpose, such as metal, preferably aluminium, or plastic material such as polyurethane, covered with flexible and washable material, such as leather, which can be snap-fastened to base plates fixable to the surface to be covered, the tiles and base plates being disengageable from each other if necessary.
An object of the invention is to produce a covering for surfaces with natural biodegradable material, environmentally friendly and of high quality, preferably made of leather, which allows easy maintenance as it is perfectly and more easily washable with respect to conventional carpet or wood coverings .
A further object is to provide a system in which modular elements can be easily and quickly replaced through the use of connection elements of the type that are snap- fastened and disengaged using force. Yet another object is to produce a modular covering for surfaces that allows telephone and electrical cables of even considerable diameter to be housed and concealed from view.
A further object is to allow combining and joining with different materials to that used for the various modular elements for covering surfaces so as to create pleasing aesthetic results.
Further characteristics of the invention will be more apparent from the detailed description set forth below purely by way of non-limiting examples of embodiments, shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figures 1 and IA show, respectively in a top plan view and in a side elevation, a modular element for covering surfaces in conformity with the invention resting on four corner base plates to support and interlock with the modular element for covering surfaces;
Figure 2 shows, in a top plan view, a base tile for supporting a square for covering surfaces;
Figure 3 shows, in perspective view, a base plate to support and interlock with a modular element for covering surfaces;
Figures 4A, 4B and 4C respectively show in a bottom plan view, in a perspective view and in a side elevation, one of the interlocking inserts for connection of said base tile to the relative base plate to support and interlock with a modular element for covering surfaces;
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of a modular element connectable to other similar elements directly adjacent to one another;
Figure 6 shows a perspective view of a modular element connectable to other similar elements with interposing of peripheral profiles; and
Figure 7 shows one of the many possible variants of the shape of a modular element for covering surfaces.
According to the present invention, each modular element for covering surfaces principally consists in a base tile 10 (Figure 2), for example made of aluminium, or of plastic material, such as polyurethane, depending on the surface to be covered, in which holes 12 are produced, for the purpose to be explained below. A square of material 14 for covering surfaces will be applied to this tile 10 in any manner, such as by gluing; the square 14 will preferably be cowhide that has undergone a chrome-free tanning process, with optional interposing of a layer of foam rubber or the like to provide a sense of softness.
During the laying operation, each base tile 10 will be placed on base plates 16 made of fireproof material, such as metal, or plastic resin, such as ABS, disposed at least at the corners thereof, or in several points along each side when required by the dimensions of the tile, above all in the case of covering floors in which case the tile must have characteristics of minimum deflection.
These base plates present a plurality of slightly resilient studs 17 suitable to interlock elastically, i.e. snap-fasten, inside hollow resilient inserts 18 inserted with force in said holes 12 of the base tile 10. Said hollow resilient inserts 18 are preferably formed by cylindrical bushings made of plastic material, if necessary presenting a double slot 20 in the diameter involving approximately the upper half thereof, which are inserted in the holes 12 of the base tile 10 while the remaining lower part presents a plurality of counterforts with external wedges 22, for example six, projecting with the most protruding part thereof slightly above the bottom of the bushing and connecting at the top with the cylindrical peripheral wall thereof. The upper part of said inserts 18 can be inserted with force under the base tile inside the holes 12 for an insertion depth that allows the lower part of the inserts 18 presenting the counterforts 22 to project. This lower part of the hollow inserts 18 can be snap- fastened over said studs 17 of the base plates 16 and if required can be disengaged to replace the tile, due to the deformable nature of the inserts 18 and of the studs 17. Naturally, the tiles 10 could also be moulded in one piece with the inserts 18.
Each base plate 16, provided with integral studs 17 which can be snap-fastened in the cylindrical cavities of the inserts 18, will be fixed to the surface to be covered using mechanical fastening means, such as screws, or by gluing or by interlocking in suitable cavities of the application surface, such as a wall, with the possibility of floating movement.
The modular element for covering surfaces represented in Figure 5 is mounted on base plates so as to allow a plurality of modular elements for covering surfaces to be placed directly adjacent to one another. According to another system for laying the various modular elements for covering surfaces (Figure 6) , each of these can be joined, on each side thereof, to a profile 23 which also connects to the supporting base plate in the manner described above, so as to form a decorative element which separates the various elements for covering surfaces, made with different materials, such as wood, stone, metal and other suitable materials, thus producing a further aesthetic pattern. On the lower part of these profiles, raceways 24 are provided for the passage of cables and conducting wires for electricity, data and image transmission and the like, even of considerable diameter.
Other thinner conducting wires can be laid using the cavity existing between the surface to be covered and the bottom of the base tiles 10.
Figure 7 shows a modular element for covering surfaces with rounded corners 26 suitable to receive, at these rounded corners 26, quadrangular decorative elements (not shown) made of various decorative materials, as in the case of the profiles shown in Figure 6. Naturally, the tiles 10 can have various shapes, the covering material of the tiles can be of any suitable nature and present colours and patterns of any kind capable of improving the aesthetic appearance of the covering.
However, the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described and illustrated, as it is susceptible to numerous variants and modifications, always and in any case falling within the scope of protection of this invention defined by the appended claims.
