Abstract

A safety device for an elevator, having a receiving rail stopper and rotating rail stopper installed in a housing horizontally movable relative to a car. Guide rails for guiding the car are disposed between the receiving rail stopper and the rotating rail stopper. The distance between the receiving rail stopper and the rotating rail stopper is reduced when the rotating rail stopper is rotated in the vertical direction. The housing is moved by a movement drive mechanism in the directions in which the rotating rail stopper is in contact with and away from the guide rails. When the rotating rail stopper is rotated, while in contact with the guide rails, in the direction corresponding to the direction of movement of the car, the guide rails are held between the rotating rail stopper and the receiving rail stopper.
