Description
MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ADVERTISING
This invention relates to mobile telecommunications advertising. More particularly it relates to a data storage device for use with a mobile telecommunications device, which enables mobile telecommunications advertising, and remunerating a user of the mobile telecommunications device for advertisements transmitted to a recipient from the mobile telecommunications device.
Companies spend a large amount of resources advertising their products via both traditional media, such as newsprint and television, and the Internet. Whilst these channels of advertising are effective, they are not as effective as consumer-led interactive marketing techniques such as viral marketing.
One channel of marketing that has not been addressed generally by the current advertising media is that of mobile telephones.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a data storage device comprising a processor, an input-output port and a data storage element, the input-output port being arranged to engage with a communications port of a mobile telecommunications device such that the data storage device and the mobile telecommunications device can transfer data therebetween, the data storage element having data stored thereupon corresponding to graphic content, the processor being arranged to receive a request for data from the mobile telecommunications device, to retrieve data corresponding to the graphic content from the data storage element and to pass said data to the mobile telecommunications device via the input-output port, the data being arranged to be appended to a message to be transmitted from the mobile telecommunications device.
The data may comprise a code. The processor may be arranged to parse the message in order to determine if a code corresponding to graphic content is contained therein. The code may be decoded at network infrastructure. The network infrastructure may be arranged to parse the message in order to determine if a code corresponding to graphic content is contained therein. The network infrastructure may comprise a data structure containing graphic content and the graphic content may be inserted into the message in response to the code. The network infrastructure may comprise a short message service centre (SMSC). The network infrastructure may comprise a basestation.
The use of a code corresponding to graphic content reduces the amount of data that must be transferred from the mobile telecommunications device to the network infrastructure. This reduces network traffic.
The data may comprise a graphic data file. The graphic data file may be inserted into the message at the telecommunications device.
The graphic content may correspond to either a logo or a slogan. The logo or the slogan may be related to an advertiser's product or brand.
The input-output port may be arranged to connect to an external data port of the mobile telecommunications device.
The data storage device may be attachable to and detachable from the mobile telecommunications device. The data storage device may be attached to the mobile telecommunications device, to use the data storage device. The data storage device may be detached from the mobile telecommunications device, to prevent use of the data storage device. Therefore a user of the mobile telecommunications device has a choice
whether or not to use the data storage device, i.e. whether or not to send data, e.g. advertising, with a message.
The data storage device may be provided within the mobile telecommunications device. The data storage device may be based on a SIM card of the mobile telecommunications device. The input-output port of the data storage device may be arranged to engage with a communications port provided by the SIM card of the mobile telecommunications device. The data storage device may be activated to use the data storage device. The data storage device may be deactivated to prevent use of the data storage device. The data storage device may be activated and may be deactivated using an operating system of the mobile telecommunications device, for example in a manner similar to any other application provided on the mobile telecommunications device. Again, a user of the mobile telecommunications device has a choice whether or not to use the data storage device, i.e. whether or not to send data, e.g. advertising, with a message.
The data storage device may be arranged to transmit data to network infrastructure, such that a user's account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.
The data storage device may be arranged to communicate with a SIM card of the mobile telecommunications device each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted, such that a user's account is credited each time data corresponding to graphic content is transmitted.
The message transmitted by the mobile telecommunications device may be sent to a mobile telecommunications device of a recipient, which may choose to access the message or to delete the message. The recipient
mobile telecommunications device may analyse a message to determine if the message contains data corresponding to graphic content, if the message does contain data corresponding to graphic content may communicate this to a user of the recipient mobile telecommunications device, and may access or delete the message on instructions from the user. If a message comprising data corresponding to graphic content is accessed by the recipient mobile telecommunications device, an account of the user of the recipient mobile telecommunications device may be credited.
A user of a data storage device may choose to send a message comprising data corresponding to graphic content, and a recipient of such a message may choose to access or delete the message. Therefore the invention provides 'free-will1 advertising, and is not simply a way to send spam to a recipient.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a mobile telecommunications device comprising a data storage device according to the first aspect of the present invention.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a telecommunications system comprising a mobile telecommunications device, network infrastructure, the mobile telecommunications device being arranged to transfer code data corresponding to graphic content to the network infrastructure appended to a message, the network infrastructure being arranged to append graphic content defined by said code data to the message and being further arranged to transmit said message and said graphic content to a recipient.
The network infrastructure may be arranged to credit a user account each time graphic content is appended to the message.
The mobile telecommunications device may comprise a SIM card and may be arranged to credit a user account each time graphic content is appended to the message.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of remunerating a user of a mobile telecommunications device comprising the steps of: i) providing content at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device; ii) accessing said content in response to a flag; iii) appending at least one piece of said content to an outgoing graphic based communication, and iv) crediting a user account associated with the mobile telecommunications device, or a user, in response to the sending of said content to a third party.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of increasing exposure of advertising comprising the steps of: i) providing content corresponding to a logo or slogan associated with a product at, or associated with, a mobile telecommunications device; ii) appending said content to an outgoing graphic based communication, and iii) opening said content at a mobile telecommunications device receiving said graphic based communication.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided a data structure comprising entries relating to alphanumeric code data;
graphic content data, value of graphic content data, receipt of the alphanumeric code at a processor causes the graphic content to be appended to a message passing through the processor and further causes a user account to be credited with an amount corresponding to the numerical value of the value of the graphic content data.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a data storage device according to an aspect of the present invention;
