Description

BEDSHEET RETAINER
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method and a system for securing a bedsheet to a mattress.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Bedsheets are used to cover mattresses for the aesthetic look and for better comfort of a user since the finishing of mattresses are usually not comfortable. To put a bedsheet on a mattress properly, the bedsheet will have to be positioned on the mattress and the excess material has to be tucked under the mattress to secure the bedsheet. For a user who tosses and turns during sleep, the bedsheet will be inevitably displaced. This causes discomfort to the user, and is not aesthetically pleasing. This displacement may cause the bedsheet on the surface of the mattress to be folded, or to the extent that the bedsheet is displaced from the surface of the mattress.
In the prior art, bedsheets are made to fit to a mattress by having elastic edges. Such a fitted bedsheet helps to ease the alignment with the mattress. However, fitted bedsheets still have excess material which has to be tucked under the mattress. Inadvertently, the bedsheet will still be displaced when a user tosses and turns during sleep.
US Patent Nos. 5,327,595 and 6,907,628 disclose devices to secure the bedsheet to keep the bedsheet in a fixed position on the mattress. In US 5,327,595, a band is used to encircle a mattress with a bedsheet, and another band is extended around the foot end of a set of box springs to hold the bedsheet in a fixed position. Prolonged use of this method to secure a bedsheet to a mattress is likely to cause the mattress to be deformed by the band encircling the mattress and is therefore undesirable.
In US 6,907,628, an excess length of a bedsheet is wrapped around a slat, secured by a plurality of clips and tucked under the mattress. The use of this device requires some effort in terms of exertion and time. Hence, there is a need to provide a simple and effective method and system to secure a bedsheet to a mattress.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention discloses a bedsheet retainer system for securing a bedsheet in position on a mattress which includes a bedsheet having an attachment means on a side, and a complementary attachment means on a peripheral of the mattress, for receiving the attachment means of the bedsheet.
In a second embodiment of the invention, which is suitable for a bedsheet having an excess length to cover a lateral side of the mattress, the complementary attachment means in the bedsheet retainer system, is on both the topside of the mattress and the lateral side of the mattress.
In a third embodiment of the invention, which is suitable for a bedsheet having an excess length to cover the lateral periphery of the mattress, the complementary attachment means in the bedsheet retainer system is on two opposite sides of the lateral periphery of the mattress for receiving the portion of the bedsheet covering the lateral side.
In a variation of the third embodiment, the complementary attachment means is provided on a wrapping means dimensioned to wrap around the dimensions of the lateral periphery of the mattress or bedframe.
The attachment means on the bedsheet and the complementary attachment means on the wrapping means are press-studs, or a hook and loop type fastener.
Preferably, the bedsheet retainer system further includes a wrapping means for wrapping the peripheral of the mattress, where the complementary attachment means is positioned on the wrapping means. In an alternative embodiment, the complementary attachment means is positioned on a holding means dimensioned to hold the mattress.
In addition, the invention is a method for removably securing a bedsheet in position on a mattress, including the steps of providing the bedsheet with an attachment means on a side, and a complementary attachment means on the mattress, and attaching the attachment means to the complementary attachment means.
The attachment means on the bedsheet and the complementary attachment means on the wrapping means are press-studs, or a hook and loop type fastener.
In another embodiment, the complementary attachment means is removable. In this embodiment, the method further includes providing a complementary attachment means on an adjustable band alongside the lateral periphery of the mattress.
Alternatively, the adjustable band is an open-ended strip. For an open-ended strip, the method further includes providing a securing means at both ends of the band to secure the ends for forming a closed band. The securing means can be buttons with corresponding button holes, press studs, Velcro™ or any other fasteners.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The invention discloses a bedsheet retainer system as illustrated in Figure 1 for securing a bedsheet 10 in position on a mattress 20. The system includes a bedsheet 10 having an attachment means 12 on a side as shown in Figure 2, and a complementary attachment means 14 of the mattress 20 as shown in Figure 3 for receiving the attachment means 12 of the bedsheet 10. The complementary attachment means 14 is on the topside 16 of the mattress 20. The bedsheet 10 in the invention is secured to the mattress 20 without providing excess length for tucking under the mattress unlike the prior art. This is advantageous for a mattress which is set in a bedframe, the mattress only need to have the topside covered by the bedsheet. The attachment means 12 is on the portion of the bedsheet 10 which covers the complementary attachment means 14. When the attachment means 12 is engaged with the complementary attachment means 14, the bedsheet is aligned with and secured to the mattress 10. The features of the invention are illustrated in Figure 4.
As seen in Figure 4, the invention provides for a bedsheet 10 having an attachment means 12 and a mattress 20 having a complementary attachment means 14. The attachment means 12 and complementary attachment means 14 positioned such that when the bedsheet 10 is placed across the mattress 20, the attachment means 12 and the complementary attachment means 14 are placed together in a mating engagement, the bedsheet is properly positioned on the mattress.
In a second embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figure 5, which is suitable for a bedsheet 10 which covers a mattress 20 and a lateral side 18 of the mattress 20, the complementary attachment means 14 in the bedsheet retainer system, is on both the topside 16 of the mattress and the lateral side 18 of the mattress. Figure 6 illustrates a third embodiment of the invention, which is suitable for a bedsheet 10 covering a mattress 20 and the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress 20 or the bedframe, the complementary attachment means 14 in the bedsheet retainer system, is on two opposite sides of the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress 20 or the bedframe for receiving the portion of the bedsheet covering the lateral side 18. Alternatively, the complementary attachment means 14 is provided both on the topside 16 of the mattress and the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress 20 or the bedframe.
In a variation of the third embodiment illustrated in Figure 7, a bedsheet 10 covering a mattress 20 and the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress 20 or the bedframe as shown in Figures 5 and 6, the complementary attachment means 14 is provided alongside the lateral periphery of the mattress 20. Preferably, the complementary attachment means 14 is removably secured to the mattress 20 or a bedframe.
In the embodiments where the complementary attachment means 14 is removably secured to the mattress 20 or bedframe, as seen in Figure 7, the complementary attachment means 14 is provided on a wrapping means 30 dimensioned to wrap around the dimensions of the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress or bedframe. An elastic band can be used for a portion of the wrapping means 30. Preferably, the wrapping means 30 is an elastic band which allows an ease of fitting to and removal from the mattress or bedframe. Advantageously, the wrapping means 30 is a collapsible structure for ease of storage and transportation. An example of the wrapping means is illustrated in Figure 8.
In an alternative embodiment, the wrapping means 30 is an open-ended strip. In this embodiment, the wrapping means 30 includes a securing means at both ends to secure the ends, forming a closed band on the lateral periphery 18 of the mattress or bedframe. The securing means can be buttons with corresponding button holes, press studs, hook and loop type fasteners such as sold under the trademark Velcro™, or any other fasteners.
In a fourth embodiment, the complementary attachment means 14 is provided on a holding means 32 which is dimensioned to hold the mattress as shown in Figure 9A. The complementary attachment means can be positioned at any suitable location on the holding means 32. In the example illustrated in Figure 9A, the complementary attachment means 14 is positioned on the top edge of the holding means 32. Alternatively, the complementary attachment means is positioned on the lateral periphery. Preferably, the holding means 32 includes an elastic portion. Figure 9B illustrates an example of this embodiment. An elastic portion 34 is provided on each corner of the holding means 32 so that the holding means 32 is secured to the mattress. In another variation, the bottom of the holding means 32 is hollow except for a surrounding edge 36 for the mattress to hold it in place as shown in Figure 9C. Alternatively, the bottom is at least one strap 38 provided across the lengths or breaths for the mattress to hold it in place.
