Abstract

The invention relates to methods for removing petroleum products from the surfaces of river and sea areas. The aim of said invention is to increase the performance of a process for removing petroleum products from a water surface. The inventive method consists in filling sealed chambers which are arranged on a ship used for removing oil and other pollutants with outside water, the specific density of which is greater than unity because of salts dissolved therein, in closing the top opening of said chambers, in filling the reception compartment of the ship with the water of the area to a level which is higher than the level of the lower openings of the sealed chambers and in opening said lower openings in such a way that water columns are formed by the atmospheric pressure in each sealed chamber. Due to the direct contact of the water columns with a polluted laye, the heavier water forming the columns in the sealed chambers is substituted for light fractions the specific density of which is less than unity. Once the content of the chambers is substituted for petroleum products, the lower openings are closed, the sealed chambers are disconnected from the reception compartment and are transported to a pollutant discharge station.
