Description

ADJUSTABLE SIZING DEVICE FOR CLOTHES HANGERS
This invention relates to an adjustable sizing device for use with a clothes hanger.
It is known to identify the size of a garment which is hung on a clothes hanger. For example, the garment size may be displayed on a small block of plastics material which is removably attached to the hanger. A problem with such a block is that it identifies only a single garment size and it is therefore necessary for the user to maintain a supply of numerous different identification blocks.
Adjustable garment size indicator devices are also known, for example, from GB- A-2 342 856. However, such devices are undesirably bulky and therefore unattractive to both the user and the shopper. A smaller adjustable garment size indicator is known from US-A-1 544 844, but this has the disadvantage that the size display is undesirably small and the range of sizes that can be displayed is undesirably limited.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable sizing device for clothes hangers which overcomes, or at least ameliorates, the above problems.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable sizing device for clothes hangers and comprising: a housing having a viewing aperture; first and second substantially cylindrical members rotatably mounted within the housing; an elongate strip of flexible material wound around and extending between the first and second cylindrical members and carrying a plurality of sizing markings; and means for rotating the cylindrical members so as to move the elongate strip between the cylindrical members so as to position a particular sizing marking within the viewing aperture.
The viewing window may be substantially planar.
The viewing window may be open. Alternatively, the viewing window may be glazed.
The elongate strip may extend adjacent to the viewing window. The housing may include a projecting portion which extends from a rear of the housing towards the viewing window. The projecting portion may terminate in a substantially planar area a short distance from the viewing window, the planar area being substantially parallel to a plane of the viewing window.
The housing may be provided with a further viewing window, the further viewing window being formed in a curved end region of the housing.
The first and second cylindrical members may each be formed with a head portion, the head portion being formed with means for engaging with tool means for rotating the cylindrical members. The engaging means may comprise an axial recess provided with one or more axially extending ridges formed on an inner periphery of the recess.
The first and second cylindrical members may be provided with means engaging the housing so as to retain the cylindrical members within the housing. The engaging means may comprise a peripheral recess provided on each of the cylindrical members and an annular protrusion providing in the housing.
The adjustable sizing device may include clip means for securing the sizing device to a hanger.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a clothes hanger provided with one embodiment of an adjustable sizing device according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the adjustable sizing device shown in Figure 1 ;
Figure 3 is a view of internal components of the adjustable sizing device shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a front elevational view of another embodiment of an adjustable sizing device according to the present invention;
Figure 5 corresponds to Figure 4, but with a front cover of the adjustable sizing device removed;
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view through the adjustable sizing device of Figure 4, substantially along the line Vl-Vl in Figure 4;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of internal components of the adjustable sizing device of Figure 4; and
Figure 8 shows the adjustable sizing device of Figure 4 mounted on a garment hanger.
Figure 1 shows a clothes hanger 1 , for example of metal and/or plastics material, to which an adjustable sizing device 3 is removably attached by any convenient securing means. As can be seen from Figures 2 and 3, the device comprises a housing 5 which is elongated and is provided with rounded ends 7. The housing ideally has a depth of no more than substantially 6 mm in order that it is not significantly deeper than hangers in common use. Two viewing windows in the form of display apertures 9, 11 are formed in the housing, one aperture 9 being formed in a plane side face 13 and the other aperture 11 being formed in a rounded end 7. Consequently, it is necessary only that one end of the housing 5 is rounded. Thus, plane aperture 9 allows the size to be viewed from the front or back of a hanger, while curved aperture 11 allows the size to be viewed from the side of a hanger.
Within the housing 5 are provided two cylindrical members 17, 19, aperture 9 being formed adjacent to cylindrical member 17 and aperture 11 being formed adjacent to cylindrical member 19. An elongate strip 21 of thin, flexible material, for example plastics material, extends substantially the height of the cylindrical members and is wound around the members 17, 19 such that the face that is outermost on one of the cylindrical members is innermost on the other of the cylindrical members. The elongate strip 21 may suitably be made of polyester plastics material which is relatively strong as a thin film. In this way it is possible to accommodate a significant number of sizes and/or other information, for example up to thirty, in a relatively small housing. The cylindrical members are rotatably mounted in upper and lower faces of the housing 5.
A range of garment sizes is printed along the length of each side of the elongate strip 21 and are displaced laterally such that the same size, for example size 14 as illustrated in Figure 2, is displayed in each of the apertures 9, 11.
An end of at least one of the cylindrical members 17, 19, and preferably both cylindrical members, is provided with means for rotating the cylindrical members in order to advance the elongate strip 21 in one direction or the other. For example, an end of one or both cylindrical members may be formed with a recess provided with one or more axially extending ridges formed on the inner periphery of the recess. In this way, a tool may be provided which is adapted to engage the recess and the ridge(s) for rotating the cylindrical member(s) and advancing the elongate strip.
The housing 5 may be attached to a hanger 1 in a number of ways. For example, the housing may be secured to the hanger, ideally in the region of a hook thereof, by means of a clip such as that shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. Many such clips are well known to the skilled person for attaching accessories to hangers and do not form any part of the present invention.
Alternatively, the housing may be welded to the hanger or may be incorporated into a body of the hanger, for example beneath the hook thereof.
The housing is preferably made of separable components to enable the elongate strip 21 to be exchanged for a different strip, for example to further extend the range of sizes that can be displayed orto accommodate different sizing schemes which are used in different countries.
In practice, it has been found that it is not necessary for the size to be viewable through two apertures in the housing and that a single aperture allows a shopper to ascertain the required size information. A single aperture is more convenient in many ways in that it allows the housing to be made sufficiently narrow so as not to exceed the depth of a clothes hanger while permitting the size information to be presented in a sufficiently readable manner. An further embodiment of an adjustable sizing device is shown in Figures 4 to 7. The adjustable sizing device comprises a housing 101 which is moulded in two parts, a front part 103 and a rear part 105. The front part 103 is formed with a planar aperture 107 which serves as a viewing window through which sizing information 109 can be seen. The aperture 107 is generally open and does not include a transparent glazing panel so as to keep costs to a minimum, although such a glazing panel can be provided if desired.
A securing clip 111 extends from an end of the housing 101 to secure the adjustable sizing device to a clothes hanger 1 13 as shown in Figure 8.
Within the housing, as shown particularly in Figures 5 to 7, an elongate strip 115 is rolled around two cylindrical members 117, 119 which are rotatable so as to be able to move the elongate strip between the two cylindrical members thereby changing the sizing information 109 which can be seen through the aperture
107. The elongate strip 115 extends in a substantially planar configuration between the two cylindrical members and also substantially parallel to the aperture 107.
The two cylindrical members 117, 119 are each formed with a head portion 121 ,
123 of greater diameter than the cylindrical portion which carried the elongate strip 115. The head portion 121 , 123 extends through an end of the housing 101 remote from the securing clip 111 and is formed with a cylindrical recess 125, 127, each recess being formed with one or more axially extending ridges 129 formed on the inner periphery of the recess. A tool (not shown) may be provided which is adapted to enter the recess 125, 127 and engage the ridge(s) 129 for rotating either of the cylindrical members so as to move the elongate strip between the cylindrical members and change the size information displayed. Such a tool may be operated manually or may be operated automatically, either to wind the elongate strip to a predetermined end or to wind the elongate strip a predetermined distance so as to show predetermined size information through the aperture 107.
The other end of each of the cylindrical members 117, 119 is formed with a peripheral recess 131 which engages with an annular protrusion 133 formed in the housing 101 in order to prevent the cylindrical members being removed from the housing.
Particularly because the aperture 107 is open, there is a possibility that a shopper or user may insert a finger or the like into the aperture and may deform the elongate strip 115. To minimise the risk of damage to the elongate strip, the rear part 105 of the housing is provided with a projecting portion 135 which extends between the cylindrical members 117, 119 to terminate in a planar area 137 a short distance from the aperture 107 so as to provide support for the elongate strip 107 and to minimise the risk of damage to the strip. The planar area 137 is substantially parallel to the plane of the aperture 107. As hangers are increasingly re-used, size markers have to be removed, managed and then re-applied to the hanger. However, the present invention provides an adjustable sizing device which can remain on a hanger when it is reused and can be reset to provide required size information when the hanger is associated with a particular garment, thereby saving both time and expense.
