Abstract

The invention provides a self-venting packaging article having a frangible seal (14) that is formed from a composition (16) that is sensitive to heat an pressure. The composition forms a frangible seal between opposing surfaces (30, 32) of the packaging article. The composition comprises a combination of a water-insoluble thermoplastic elastomer and wax. Heating of the packaging article to an elevated temperature causes the composition to weaken and also results in the accumulation of moisture vapor within the interior of the packaging article. When the pressure inside the interior of the packaging exceeds the strength of the frangible seal, the frangible seal ruptures and thereby provides an outlet through which moisture vapor can escape. The self-venting packing article permits a food product to be cooked in the seale packaging article and reduces the occurrences of undesirable rupturing. Additionally, the need to open the package prior to heating can be reduced.
