Description

"FIRE-RETARDANT, SELF FUSIBLE, WATER REPELLANT, ANTI TRACKING, HIGH TEMPERATURE WITHSTANDING SILICONE ELASTOMER TAPE FOR ELECTRICAL INSULATION" AND THE PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING THE
SAME"
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
The invention relates to "Fire-Retardant, Self Fusible, Water Repellant, Anti Tracking, And High Temperature withstanding Silicone Elastomer Tape For Electrical Insulation" and the process of manufacturing the same.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR-ART:
Various types of electrical insulation tapes are available in the market. But the said tapes do not have all the properties such as self fusible, fire retardant, water repellant, anti- tracking properties. The electrical insulation tapes cause fire and loss of properties to the users of such tapes.
A variety of silicone rubbers are available for insulating and cushioning electrical and electronic assemblies. Silicone rubbers exhibit a wish list of characteristics including superb chemical resistance, high temperature performance, good thermal and electrical resistance, long term resiliency and easy fabrication. Liquid silicone rubbers are available in electrical grades for conformal coating, potting and gluing. Silicone rubbers filled with conducting fillers are available for applications requiring thermal conductivity.
Silicone elastomer compounded with pigments and curing agents and extruded / calendered to obtain it in tape form which is flexible is used in the insulation of inter connectors of Stator coils of traction motors, Busbar insulation. The tape being conformable can be wrapped on contours which results in no air gaps thus imparting good waterproof effect. The tape has good resistance to Corona discharges, weathering, oxidation and fungus attack. The tape however is not fire retardant. To overcome this problem, new tape having the above referred properties clubbed together with self fusibility and fire retardancy are included in the present invention.
The patent No. GB0869778A dated 7-6-1961 to GEN ELECTRIC is attributed to Electrically insulating material comprising of Polyester - glass cloth coated with silicone elastomer. This product is non-fire retardant and also has polyester and fiber glass cloth as its constituents and hence the patent is not related to the present invention.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
In the present invention a , silicone- elastomer tape is prepared having self fusible, fϊre- retardant, characteristics for high-temperature electrical insulation purpose.
A process of manufacturing of the "Fire-retardant,Self fusible, water repellant, anti- tracking and high temperature withstanding silicone elastomer tape for electrical insulation" comprises of a special grade of silicone elastomer suitably modified with fillers, additives and curing agents to impart the self fusible property and extruded / calendered in the form of tape having weight of 500-550 gms per square meter for 0.5mm thick tape. The thickness of tape can vary from 0.2mm to 10mm, commensurate with the desired properties of electric strength and breaking strength. The calendering / extrusion of the formulated silicone elastomer is carried out using conventional methods and using polymer film like polyester, polyurethane, PTFE film as carrier material followed by curing of the tape.
The steps involved are as follows:
1) Formulation of silicone elastomer by compounding two or more special grade silicone elastomers having different hardness on a two-roll milling machine/Banbury machine, with fillers like oxides and / or hydroxides of metal, curing agents like organic peroxides and two or more additives as applicable to impart the properties of fire-retardancy and self fusibility. 2) The said compounded silicone elastomer having fire-retardancy and self fusibility property is then calendered / extruded on polymeric film like polyester, polyurethane, PTFE film as carrier film followed by curing of the tape.
3) The calendered /extruded tape so obtained is cut to desired sizes and shapes.
4) Alternatively the said compounded silicone elastomer having fire-retardancy and self fusibility property is then calendered /extruded on polymeric film like polyester , polyurethane, PTFE film as carrier film & slit to desired sizes & shape followed by curing of the tape
5) The said tape has the following features:-
(a) Self Fusibility
(b) Fire retardancy,
(c) High electrical insulation,
(d) Anti-tracking,
(e) High-temperature withstanding capability, and
(f) Water repellency.
This high temperature withstanding (Class-H) tape successfully passes the Underwriters Laboratories Specification UL-510 - flame retardancy test.
The said tape finds application in the insulation of inter connectors of Stator coils of traction motors, Busbar insulation etc.
CONSTRUCTION:
Formulated Silicone Elastomer with Self Fusible property Polyester film
