Abstract

A slack cable detection system (20) includes a conductive member (32) deployable adjacent a normally tensioned metallic cable (4). The conductive member can comprise a bar (32) deployed on a side of the tensioned metallic cable (4) toward which the cable (4) will bow, due to the memory of the cable (4), when the cable (4) becomes slack. The slack cable detection system (20) is suspended from a cable drum (6) about which a cable (4) is wound. Multiple cable drums (6) are mounted on a rotating shaft (8) and the cables (4) are attached to a suspended device, such as a scenic drop (2) used in theaters or other displays of the type often used on cruise ships.
