Abstract

An apparatus comprising a compartment for housing a chain (12) in a gathered condition and chain driving means for extracting the chain from the compartment when the anchor is dropped in the sea and for inserting the chain in the compartment when the anchor is hauled on board. Advantageously, there are retaining means (26) for holding the chain in place when it is gathered in the compartment.
