- This invention relates to a securing appliance for tendon grafts which can be used to connect tendon grafts in orthopaedic operations without injuring or shearing the tendon grafts.
- the most common way of securing tendon grafts to bones in orthopaedic operations is through screws or staples.
- These methods suffer from a number of disadvantages, such as (a) the tendon is sheared by the threaded screw, (b) the tendon slips along the securing appliance, which results in loosening of the grip of the joint (e.g. knee) applied by the securing appliance, and (c) crushing and damaging of the tendon graft, caused by the rotation of the screw on the body of the graft.
- Fig. 1 shows the securing appliance for tendon grafts in accordance with the present invention which comprises of a part of the appliance (part 1 in fig.l, which is depicted also in figs 2 and 5), which passes through a hole which has been drilled into the bone and has the tendon on its outside surface.
- the graft passes through the hole which has been drilled by the surgeon on the upper part of the bone and a screw is applied to widen the hole and secure firmly the graft onto the bone, while at the same time protecting the graft from the rotation of the screw (part 2 in fig.l, which is also depicted in figs.3 and 6).
- the embodiment of the tendon graft securing appliance shown in the figures comprises of two parts.
- the first part (part 1 in fig.l, fig.2, fig.5) is an outer housing shaped as part of a cylinder, as needed to apply pressure on the graft.
- the diameter varies from 2 to 15 millimeters and its length varies from 15 to 45 millimeters.
- the second part is screw shaped (part 2 in fig.l, fig.3, fig.6) which is smaller at its tailing end and has a treaded hole at its other end and along its length to use with a protractor to push into or an extractor to pull the part out of the hole in the bone.
- the first part of the appliance On the outside surface of the first part of the appliance (fig.2) and in a perpendicular direction to the longitudinal axis there are at least three rings (3 in fig.2) for sinking the tendon into the bone, which have blunt edges (in contrast to the threads of the screw) for the protection of the tendon graft.
- At one end of the first part of the appliance there is a conical ending (5 in fig.2) which allows for easy insertion of the appliance into the hole which has been drilled into the bone.
- the second part of the tendon graft securing appliance is a screw which consists of its body (8 in fig.3), the thread (9 in fig.3), the smaller diameter tail end (10 in fig.3), the head is cut at an angle (11 in fig.3) and a driver hole (12 in fig.3) to use with a protractor or an extractor.
- the head is cut at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the part, so as to when the graft is screwed into the bone and the screw has sunk into the bone hole there is no part of the screw remaining above the outer surface of the bone.

Abstract
L'invention concerne un appareil de fixation pour greffes de tendons comprenant une pière ayant la forme d'un cylindre, pourvu de bagues sur la surface externe de façon à fixer la greffe de tendon et des filets de vis sur la surface interne, et une vis pourvue d'une découpe au niveau d'un angle par rapport à l'axe longitudinal de la pièce et une extrémité de diamètre plus petit pourvue d'un trou fileté afin de l'utiliser avec un rapporteur d'angle ou un extracteur. L'appareil peut être utilisé dans la fixation de greffes (tendon, etc.) dans des interventions orthopédiques (genou, etc.).
