Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for positioning an object in all directions.
- the object is configured to have at least one spherical cap portion to be placed on the positioning device.
- the object with its spherical cap is held by gravity on three points of support of the positioning device.
- the positioning device comprises means for driving in particular in rotation the object, whose center of gravity in any position or orientation is within the triangle constituted by the three points of support.
- positioning devices in particular for systems for measuring the radiation pattern of a transmitting antenna.
- Such positioning devices can for example orient the transmitting antenna in all directions with respect to a fixed receiving antenna with characteristics well known to a receiving device.
- This receiving device connected to a data processing station is capable of sensing the electromagnetic field produced by the transmitting antenna at a distance in all the positions or orientations of said antenna. In this way, the treatment station can determine the radiation pattern of the transmitting antenna to characterize it.
- the transmitting antenna to be measured may be placed in a spherical element so that the spherical element can be held by gravity for example on three points of support of a positioning device.
- a positioning device of the prior art comprises three driving wheels whose contact of each wheel on the outer surface of the spherical element is one of the three points of support.
- These driving wheels may be small tires, which are each moved by drive means, such as engines or turbines with compressed air. By driving said wheels, the spherical element in contact with the wheels can rotate randomly in all three directions.
- this positioning device of the prior art has certain disadvantages. Indeed, when the three driving wheels turn, the movement, they communicate to the spherical element, involves a tangential movement to the points of support, that is to say, to the three points of contact. This movement is the result of the three friction forces of the wheels. In other words, the wheels skid most of the time on the outer surface of the spherical element in motion. This has the effect of animating the spherical element according to a chaotic schedule. The various friction acts on the outer surface of the spherical element such as gums which dirty the outer surface of the spherical element.
- the tangential motion of the sphere is exactly orthogonal to the orientation of one of the wheels, this has the effect of making the spherical element hover around its origin.
- This momentary deflection of the center of the sphere causes an error in a position or measured orientation of the transmitting antenna, which is a disadvantage.
- the spherical element which can be unbalanced, has a marked tendency to fall back according to its center of mass. This results in a poor homogeneity of the positions traveled.
- US 3,441,936 discloses a device for positioning a spherical element inside which a transmitting antenna can be placed.
- This spherical element is held by gravity on three drive wheels of the positioning device capable of orienting the transmitting antenna in all directions.
- the spherical element skids or hops on the other two drive wheels. This does not ensure a good positioning of the spherical element on the positioning device which is a disadvantage.
- the object of the invention is therefore to provide a device for positioning an object in all directions in order to overcome the disadvantages of the state of the art mentioned above.
- the invention relates to a device for positioning an object in all directions cited above which comprises the characteristics defined in the independent claim 1.
- An advantage of the positioning device according to the invention is that a single drive member is used to rotate the object placed on the three points of support.
- This drive member is capable in its orientation of driving the object, which may preferably be a spherical element, in any direction randomly.
- the drive member comprises a wheel in contact with the outer surface of the spherical element, and a support of this drive wheel.
- the axis of rotation of the wheel is mounted at the end of the support, which is rotatable along another axis passing through the point of contact of the wheel on the outer surface the spherical element and the center of the element.
- the wheel can be configured as a pulley in a circular groove of which is placed in rubber ring to come into contact with the outer surface of the spherical element.
- the rotatably mounted support on a mechanical structure of the positioning device, and the drive wheel can be rotated by means of compressed air means, such as engines or turbines with compressed air.
- FIG. 1 represents a part of the positioning device according to the invention partly in section on which is placed a spherical object
- FIG. 2 represents an object of spherical shape with the location of the bearing points of the positioning device according to the invention
- FIGS. 3a and 3b show a partial sectional view in the length direction and a plan view of a ball-and-socket ball of the positioning device according to the invention
- FIG. 4 is a simplified representation of the various elements that make up a system for measuring the radiation pattern of a transmitting antenna, which comprises a positioning device according to the invention.
- the object placed on the positioning device may be a lamp, a speaker, an indicator, an art object or decorative object, a support for an electronic device, or any other object.
- This object comprises at least one portion in the form of spherical cap capable of being placed and held on the positioning device.
- FIG. 1 represents the main elements of the positioning device 2 on which can be placed on three support points P, P ', P "a spherical cap object 3, which is preferably a hollow spherical element serving as support for a electronic device.
- This positioning device 2 comprises mounted on a mechanical structure a drive member 20 in contact with the outer surface of the spherical element, to constitute a first bearing point P, and two ball bearings 30, of which only one is visible in FIG. 1. These ball joints are explained below with reference to FIGS. 3a and 3b.
- the ball 31 of each ball joint comes into contact with the outer surface of the spherical element to form the two other bearing points P ', P "of the positioning device.
- the drive is configured so that the spherical element 3 can be rotated randomly in all directions on the positioning device.
- the three bearing points P, P ', P "as shown in FIG. 2 can be spaced regularly to form the ends of a triangle, for example an equilateral triangle arranged preferably horizontally.
- the spherical element 3 must be in any position within this equilateral triangle to be held on the positioning device.
- the space between each support point must preferably be greater than the radius of the spherical element and less than 1.5 times the radius of said spherical element
- the driving member 20 consists of a wheel 21 which comes into contact with the outer surface of the spherical element in order to drive it in rotation.
- the rotation axis r1 of this wheel 21 is mounted at the end of a support 22 or rod
- This support 22 is rotatable along another axis of rotation r2 passing through the point of contact P of the wheel on the outer surface of the spherical element and the center C of said element .
- the support is maintained in the mechanical structure of the positioning device via for example a ball bearing 25 to allow it to rotate along its axis of rotation. This thus makes it possible to impose a random rotation of the spherical element via the wheel 21 in all directions.
- This drive wheel is preferably driven by a motor 23 or compressed air turbine, which can be arranged directly on the axis of rotation of the wheel and fixedly held at the end of the support 22.
- this motor 23 can also be housed in the support near said wheel 21 and connected to the axis of rotation of the wheel by a set of gears. This gear assembly can make it possible to reduce the speed of rotation of the pneumatic motor 23.
- At least one duct or flexible hose 24 for conveying the compressed air connects the compressed air motor 23 to a non-compressed air reservoir. represent.
- the support 22 comprises a pulley 26 at the opposite end of the drive wheel 21.
- a belt 27 connects said pulley 26 to at least one other pulley, not shown, which is driven by the other motor or turbine, or another set of gears.
- FIGs 3a and 3b show one of the ball bearings 30 of the positioning device to serve as one of the bearing points of the spherical element.
- This ball 30, which may be of generally cylindrical outer shape, comprises a housing 32 for the ball made of synthetic material.
- This housing is dimensioned in such a way that the ball is free to rotate inside this housing.
- This housing may be spherical or cylindrical.
- the ball is made of a non-conductive material with a low coefficient of friction, such as Teflon, for the free ball of rotation.
- a portion of the ball 31 opens out of the housing 32 through an upper opening of the ball 30 to come into contact with the outer surface of the spherical element.
- a force F representing a portion of the weight of the spherical element is applied to the fulcrum P 'on the ball. This opening is of diameter less than the diameter of the ball to maintain the ball inside the housing 32.
- the ball 30 comprises two parts fitting one on the other in the longitudinal direction to enclose the ball 31 in the housing 32.
- the upper opening is made in a cover, not shown, partially closing the housing.
- the ball is also configured in the form of a nozzle for supplying compressed air through a conduit 33 of the ball joint into the housing 32 of the ball. In this way, the ball is held in its housing on a cushion of air.
- the flow rate is adjusted, while the third support point is the drive wheel, it is easy to float and turn the spherical element.
- the spherical element is in some cases animated by an oscillating movement. It gets closer to a nozzle, which increases the air pressure and ejects it somewhat. In the case where the local pressure, and thus the support force, decreases, the spherical element falls on the nozzle which ejects it again. Therefore with these compressed air nozzles, this requires an adjustment of the air pressure according to the weight of the sphere, which is solved by the ball joints according to the invention. A stream of compressed air comes out of the opening of the housing around the ball, whose pressure is a function of the weight of the spherical element, which avoids the problem of simple compressed air nozzles.
- the spherical element can freely be rotated smoothly in all directions.
- FIG. 4 schematically illustrates all the elements of a measurement system 1 of the radiation pattern of a transmitting antenna 4 'of an emitter electronic device 4, which comprises the positioning device 2 according to the invention.
- the positioning device 2 is represented by simplification in this FIG. 4 only by the members 20, 30, 40 supporting by gravity an object, such as a spherical element 3.
- the driving member 20 makes it possible to turn the spherical element randomly in all directions.
- the electronic device 4 with its transmitting antenna 4 ' is housed and fixedly held inside the spherical element 3, which comprises two parts, which fit together by any known means on top of each other to enclose the electronic device.
- the transmitting antenna 4 ' is positioned preferably close to the center of this hollow sphere for the measurement operations of the electromagnetic field produced by the transmitting antenna of the measuring system.
- the measurement system also comprises a reception device 5 provided with at least one fixed receiving antenna 5 'for sensing the electromagnetic field of the transmitting antenna 4' (RF signals), means for detecting the position 6 or orientation of the spherical element in motion on the positioning device 2.
