Abstract
光の利用効率を向上させながら、コントラストが低下するのを抑制することが可能な液晶表示装置を提供するため、この液晶表示装置は、少なくとも透過領域1bを有する液晶表示素子1と、後面側および前面側にそれぞれ配置された偏光板3および4と、液晶表示素子1と偏光板3との間に配置されたマイクロレンズアレイ2と、偏光板3の後面側に配置されたバックライトユニット5とを備えている。そして、液晶表示素子1は、透過領域1b以外の領域に設けられた反射抑制層13を含んでおり、反射抑制層13は、後面側から透過領域1b以外の領域に入射した光がマイクロレンズアレイ2に向かって反射するのを抑制する機能を有している。

[0090] 導光体 21の出射面 21bから外部側(プリズムシート 17側)に向力つて出射された光 L1は、伝搬方向(P方向)に向力う成分と、出射面 21bに対して垂直方向に向力う成 分とを有しているため、図 1の右斜め上方向に向かって進行する。この後、光 L1は、 プリズムシート 17の光路変更部 17aに入射した後、光路変更部 17aの第 2傾斜面 17 cで反射することによって、出射面 21bの法線方向に沿って進行する。そして、出射 面 21bの法線方向に沿って進行する光 L1は、一方の偏光板 3に入射する。

[0092] この際、球面レンズ 2aによる屈折が大きい領域に光 L11が入射した場合には、光 L 11が透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光されない場合がある。なお、図示しないが 、光 L11が球面レンズ 2aに入射する前において、光 L11の進行方向が出射面 21b の法線方向力 ずれている場合には、球面レンズ 2aによる屈折が小さい領域に光 L 11が入射したとしても、光 L11が透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光されない場合 がある。そして、透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光されない光 L11は、反射領域 1 a (透過領域 lb以外の領域)に入射する。
[0093] ここで、本実施形態では、反射領域 la (透過領域 lb以外の領域)に反射抑制層 13 が設けられているため、光 L11が反射領域 la (透過領域 lb以外の領域)に入射した としても、その光 L11がマイクロレンズアレイ 2に向かって反射するのが抑制される。
[0094] 具体的には、反射抑制層(光吸収層) 13として黒色レジスト層を用いる場合には、 反射抑制層(光吸収層) 13に入射する光 L11のほとんどが吸収されるため、光 L11 のマイクロレンズアレイ 2側への反射が著しく低減される。また、反射抑制層(光干渉 層) 13として酸化クロム層を用いる場合には、反射電極 10で反射する光と反射抑制 層(光干渉層) 13で反射する光とが干渉することにより、光 L11のマイクロレンズァレ ィ 2側への反射が低減される。
[0095] また、導光体 21の内部側に反射した光 L2は、傾斜面 21cに向力つて進行すること により、傾斜面 21cと空気との界面に到達する。これにより、光 L2は、傾斜面 21cと空 気との界面で屈折するとともに、導光体 21の傾斜面 21cから外部側 (反射板 18側) に向力つて出射される。そして、導光体 21の傾斜面 21cから外部側 (反射板 18側) に向力つて出射された光 L2は、伝搬方向(P方向)に向力 成分と、出射面 21bに対 して垂直方向に向力う成分とを有して 、るため、図 1の右斜め下方向に向力つて進行 する。この後、光 L2は、反射板 18の反射膜 18aで反射した後、再び導光体 21の内 部側に導入される。
[0096] そして、導光体 21の内部側に再導入された光 L2は、上記した光 L1と同様、導光 体 21の出射面 21bから外部側(プリズムシート 17側)に向かって出射されるとともに、 プリズムシート 17の光路変更部 17aにより進行方向が変更される。
[0097] また、進行方向が変更された光 L2は、出射面 21bの法線方向に沿って進行すると ともに、一方の偏光板 3に入射する。これにより、一方の偏光板 3からは、偏光板 3の 透過軸方向と平行な偏波方向の光 L21のみが出射される。また、一方の偏光板 3か ら出射された光 L21は、マイクロレンズアレイ 2の球面レンズ 2aに入射するとともに、 球面レンズ 2aと空気との界面で屈折する。
[0098] この際、球面レンズ 2aによる屈折が小さい領域に光 L21が入射した場合には、光 L 21が透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光されて液晶層 8を透過するとともに、他方 の偏光板 4に入射する。このとき、光 L21は、偏波方向が変わることなぐ液晶層 8を 透過する。このため、他方の偏光板 4の透過軸方向と光 L21の偏波方向とが 90° ず れた状態となるので、偏光板 4に入射した光 L21は、偏光板 4を透過しない。すなわ ち、表示が暗状態となる。
[0099] なお、図 1には、光 L21が透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光された状態を図示し た力 球面レンズ 2aによる屈折が大きい領域に光 L21が入射した場合や、球面レン ズ 2aに入射する前における光 L21の進行方向が出射面 21bの法線方向力 ずれて いる場合には、光 L21が透過開口部 12 (透過領域 lb)に集光されない場合がある。 この場合には、光 L21は、上記した光 L11と同様、反射領域 la (透過領域 lb以外の 領域)に設けられた反射抑制層 13に入射する。これにより、光 L21が反射領域 la (透 過領域 lb以外の領域)に入射したとしても、その光 L21がマイクロレンズアレイ 2に向 力つて反射するのが抑制される。
[0100] なお、本実施形態の半透過型液晶表示装置を反射型モードで動作させる場合に は、外部側 (前面側)から入射する外部光を用いる。すなわち、外部側 (前面側)から 入射する外部光を、反射電極 10で前面側に向力つて反射することによって、バックラ イトユニット 5を点灯させることなぐ文字や画像などの表示を行う。
[0101] 本実施形態では、上記のように、液晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laに、後面側から液 晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laに入射した光がマイクロレンズアレイ 2に向力つて反射す
るのを抑制するための反射抑制層 13を設けることによって、後面側から液晶表示素 子 1の反射領域 laに光が入射した場合に、その光がマイクロレンズアレイ 2に向かつ て反射するのを抑制することができるので、液晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laとマイクロ レンズアレイ 2との間で光の反射が繰り返し行われるのを抑制することができる。
[0102] これにより、一方の偏光板 3において光の偏波方向を一方向に揃えたにもかかわら ず、液晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laとマイクロレンズアレイ 2との間で偏波面が回転す る光が発生することに起因して、液晶表示素子 1の透過領域 lbに入射する光の偏波 方向が不揃いになるという不都合が生じるのを抑制することができる。
[0103] したがって、表示が暗状態の場合に、他方の偏光板 4を透過する光 (漏れ光)が発 生するのを抑制することができるので、コントラストが低下するのを抑制することができ る。その結果、マイクロレンズアレイ 2により光の利用効率を向上させながら、コントラ ストが低下するのを抑制することができる。
[0104] また、本実施形態では、上記のように、透明基板 9の表面上の反射領域 laに反射 抑制層 13を形成することによって、容易に、液晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laに反射抑 制層 13を設けることができる。
[0105] また、本実施形態では、上記のように、反射抑制層 13を、反射電極 10の後面側に 配置することによって、容易に、後面側から液晶表示素子 1の反射領域 laに入射し た光がマイクロレンズアレイ 2に向力つて反射するのを抑制することができる。
[0106] また、本実施形態では、上記のように、反射抑制層 13として、黒色レジスト層または 酸ィ匕クロム層を用いることによって、容易に、反射抑制層 13の光に対する反射率を 低くすることができる。
[0107] 次に、上記した効果を確認するために行った実験について説明する。
[0108] この確認実験では、まず、図 1に示した本実施形態の半透過型液晶表示装置と同 様の構造を有する半透過型液晶表示装置を準備した。また、比較例として、図 1に示 した本実施形態の半透過型液晶表示装置の構造において、反射抑制層が設けられ ていない半透過型液晶表示装置(図 10および図 11参照)を準備した。そして、本実 施形態および比較例の各々の半透過型液晶表示装置について、ノ ックライトユニット から出射された光が反射領域 (透過領域以外の領域)に入射した場合に、マイクロレ
ンズアレイに向力つて反射する光の反射率を調べた。
[0109] 図 6は、反射抑制層(光吸収層)として黒色レジスト層を用いた場合における光の反 射率を説明するための図であり、図 7は、反射抑制層(光干渉層)として酸化クロム層 を用いた場合における光の反射率を説明するための図である。また、図 8は、反射抑 制層を設けない場合における光の反射率を説明するための図である。
[0110] 図 6を参照して、反射領域に反射抑制層(光吸収層)としての黒色レジスト層を設け た場合には、反射領域に反射抑制層を設けない場合(図 8参照)に比べて、マイクロ レンズアレイに向力つて反射する光の反射率を低減させることができることが確認でき た。また、図 7を参照して、反射領域に反射抑制層(光干渉層)としての酸化クロム層 を設けた場合にも、反射領域に反射抑制層を設けない場合 (図 8参照)に比べて、マ イク口レンズアレイに向力つて反射する光の反射率を低減させることができることが確 認できた。
[0111] 次に、本実施形態および比較例の各々の半透過型液晶表示装置について、透過 型モードで動作させる場合におけるコントラスト比および輝度を調べた。その結果、本 実施形態の半透過型液晶表示装置では、比較例の半透過型液晶表示装置に比べ て、コントラスト比を向上させることができることが確認できた。具体的には、本実施形 態では、コントラスト比が 380であったのに対して、比較例では、コントラスト比が 300 であった。また、本実施形態および比較例の各々の半透過型液晶表示装置の輝度 は、同じ値( 200nt)であつた。

[0114] また、上記実施形態では、光吸収層として機能する反射抑制層の構成材料として、 黒色レジストを用いたが、本発明はこれに限らず、黒色レジスト以外の材料を用いて
もよい。たとえば、カーボンブラック、チタン系黒色顔料および鉄黒(四三酸化鉄)な どを光吸収層として機能する反射抑制層の構成材料として用いてもよい。また、光干 渉層として機能する反射抑制層の構成材料として、酸化クロムを用いたが、本発明は これに限らず、酸ィ匕クロム以外の材料を用いてもょ 、。
[0115] また、上記実施形態では、冷陰極管を含むバックライトユニットを用いたが、本発明 はこれに限らず、図 9に示すように、 LED (発光ダイオード) 31を含むバックライトュ- ット 30を用いてもよい。本実施形態の変形例によるバックライトユニット 30では、導光 体(図示せず)およびプリズムシート 32のプリズムは、 LED31を中心として同心円状 に形成されている。また、 LED31は、その一部が反射部材 33により囲まれている。な お、図 9は、ノ ックライトユニット 30を前面側力も見た場合の平面図であり、 50— 50線 に沿った断面が本実施形態の図 1に対応する。
産業上の利用可能性

Claims
[1] 少なくとも透過領域を有する液晶表示素子と、前記液晶表示素子の後面側および 前面側にそれぞれ配置された第 1偏光板および第 2偏光板と、前記液晶表示素子と 前記第 1偏光板との間に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域に光を集光する ためのマイクロレンズと、前記第 1偏光板の後面側に配置された光源とを備え、 前記液晶表示素子は、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に設けられた反 射抑制層を含んでおり、
前記反射抑制層は、後面側から前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に入射 した光が前記マイクロレンズに向力つて反射するのを抑制する機能を有していること を特徴とする液晶表示装置。
[2] 前記液晶表示素子は、後面側に配置された第 1基板と、前面側に配置された第 2 基板と、前記第 1基板と前記第 2基板との間に配置された液晶層とをさらに含んでお り、前記反射抑制層は、前記第 1基板の表面上の透過領域以外の領域に形成され て 、ることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載の液晶表示装置。
[3] 前記液晶表示素子は、透過領域と反射領域とを有し、前記反射抑制層は、前記液 晶表示素子の反射領域に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の 液晶表示装置。
[4] 前記液晶表示素子は、前記液晶表示素子の反射領域に設けられ、前面側から入 射する光を前面側に向かって反射するための反射電極をさらに含んでおり、前記反 射抑制層は、前記反射電極の後面側に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項 3に 記載の液晶表示装置。
[5] 前記反射抑制層は、光を吸収しやすい色を有していることを特徴とする請求項 1〜 4の 、ずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
[6] 少なくとも透過領域を有する液晶表示素子と、前記液晶表示素子の後面側および 前面側にそれぞれ配置された第 1偏光板および第 2偏光板と、前記液晶表示素子と 前記第 1偏光板との間に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域に光を集光する ためのマイクロレンズと、前記第 1偏光板の後面側に配置された光源とを備え、前記 液晶表示素子は、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に設けられた光吸収
層を含んで 、ることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
[7] 後面側から前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に入射した光は、前記光吸 収層により吸収されることを特徴とする請求項 6に記載の液晶表示装置。
[8] 前記光吸収層は、黒色レジスト、カーボンブラック、チタン系黒色顔料および鉄黒 のうちの少なくとも 1つの材料を含んでいることを特徴とする請求項 6または 7に記載 の液晶表示装置。
[9] 少なくとも透過領域を有する液晶表示素子と、前記液晶表示素子の後面側および 前面側にそれぞれ配置された第 1偏光板および第 2偏光板と、前記液晶表示素子と 前記第 1偏光板との間に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域に光を集光する ためのマイクロレンズと、前記第 1偏光板の後面側に配置された光源とを備え、前記 液晶表示素子は、前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に設けられた光反射 層と、前記光反射層の後面側に設けられた光干渉層とを含んでいることを特徴とする 液晶表示装置。
[10] 後面側から前記液晶表示素子の透過領域以外の領域に入射した光は、前記光反 射層および前記光干渉層の両方で反射され、前記光反射層で反射した光は、前記 光干渉層で反射した光と干渉することを特徴とする請求項 9に記載の液晶表示装置
[11] 前記液晶表示素子は、透過領域と反射領域とを有し、前記光反射層および前記光 干渉層は、前記液晶表示素子の反射領域に設けられており、前記光反射層の少なく とも一部は、反射電極として機能するように構成されて ヽることを特徴とする請求項 9 または 10に記載の液晶表示装置。
[12] 前記光干渉層は、少なくとも酸ィ匕クロムを含んでいることを特徴とする請求項 9〜: L 1 の!、ずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
