Definitions

  • the method relates to a method for providing free scratchable lottery tickets from advertising companies.
  • Advertising and commercial messages are commonly used in media such as television and radio commercials.
  • One problem with the currently available methods is that they are often very general and do not effectively get the attention of and focus on the best potential consumers.
  • Another problem is that most commercial messages do not require any input from the consumers so that the consumers can easily avoid the commercial messages by, for example, turning the volume down or leave the television during the commercial break so that the commercial messages never reach the viewers.
  • the method of the present invention provides a solution to the above-outlined problems. More particularly, the method is for playing a lottery game.
  • An electronic lottery ticket having a plurality of commercial images covered by electronic covers is provided.
  • a sponsoring company sponsors each commercial image.
  • the user electronically scratches off the first electronic cover to display a commercial image hidden behind the first electronic cover. While scratching off the electronic cover a commercial message associated with the commercial image is displayed.

  • the first time a user plays the free game of the present invention the user must register by providing user profile information such as age, sex, interests, social security number, address, zip code, email address etc.
  • the user registration is important because the commercial images that appear may be tailored to the profile of the user. In other words, the images on the lottery tickets are adjusted to the profile of the user.
  • the user may win prizes provided by the companies sponsoring the commercial images.
  • another important feature of the present invention is that sponsoring companies only pay for commercial images that have been seen by the user.
  • the user may enter a web page 102 and initial a login procedure.
  • the user may use the computer cursor of the mouse to virtually or electronically scratch a first box 104a of the nine boxes

  • the image 110a may be a picture of a product.
  • the first message 106a is preferably associated with the image 110a that is hidden behind the electronic cover 112a that is scratched off by the cursor.
  • the message 106a may be identical to the image 110a or different.
  • the message box 108 may also only include the commercial message 107 without the first message 106a.
  • the message 106a is a commercial message associated with a product shown in the commercial image 110a.
  • a second message 106b appears in the message box 108 and a second commercial image 110b gradually appears .
  • a winning lottery ticket has three identical images 110.
  • the user must also correctly respond to a non-commercial question within a short time period, such as 30 seconds, before the user can collect the prize.
  • the question could be knowledge-based such as asking for the name of a politician. If the user provides an incorrect response, the user may not win any prize although the user had a winning lottery ticket.
  • the noncommercial question has at least two purposes. One is to conform to certain domestic regulations so that the game is not a lottery. The other is to avoid the possibility of making programs that automatically scratch lottery tickets so that no user will actually see the commercial images and messages. It should be understood that the game of the present invention does not require the knowledge-based question and works well without such questions.
  • a losing lottery ticket has two or fewer identical images.
  • the user may activate a new lottery ticket by pressing a new lottery ticket button 111.
  • the user may see what prices are currently available by clicking on a prize button 114.
  • the user may also click on my prizes button 116 to see the prizes the user has won so far.
  • My information button 118 By clicking on my information button 118 to see the personal information that the user has provided to the organizer of the lottery.
  • An important feature of the present invention is that the user proactively scratches on the various boxes so that the commercial images appear. In this way, the user really sees the commercial images that are appearing and the user must conduct an act, i.e. scratching, to make the commercial images appear. This applies to both losing and winning lottery tickets.
  • the user may also elect to participate in a double chance lottery. This means the chances of winning are twice as good as the single chance lottery described above.
  • the double chance lottery may look identical to the single chance lottery ticket.
  • the user In order to be eligible to participate in the double chance lottery, the user must first answer a market research question such as which cheese the user prefers before the user can start scratching the lottery- ticket.
  • the system first selects a lottery ticket and determines if a winning lottery ticket should be generated or not. For example, the system must first determine if a sufficient amount of other users have added to the pot while the user is responding to the marketing question so that there is a sufficient amount in the pot for a new winning ticket to be issued. If there is an insufficient amount in the pot, no winning ticket will be presented to the user. In other words, the user cannot be presented with a winning lottery ticket when there is not enough in the pot.
  • the system first determines if there is a sufficient pot before generating and presenting the lottery ticket to the user. If it is not a winning lottery ticket, the system will select another lottery ticket and display this second lottery ticket or the first lottery ticket. One of the two losing tickets is displayed so that the user gets two chances that the system will be able to generate a winning lottery ticket compared to the single chance lottery. Preferably, if the first ticket is a winning lottery ticket, the system will display the winning lottery ticket without selecting a second lottery ticket.
  • Which commercial images that are going to be displayed to the user may also depend upon the status of the sponsoring company.
  • Sponsoring companies that have specified an interest in establishing a contact with the user will be given a higher priority compared to other sponsoring companies. However, if a sponsoring company has reached its goal of maximum contacts with the particular user or users during a campaign, the commercial images associated with that campaign of the particular sponsoring company will be given a lower rank compared to other sponsoring companies with unfulfilled, goals of contacts with the same user/consumer. It is possible for the sponsoring company to buy the right to establish extra or additional contacts beyond the maximum number of contacts with the same users that have been contacted earlier. Also, sponsoring companies that have reached their goal of a campaign with the given a lower rank compared to commercial images from sponsoring companies with unfulfilled campaigns.
  • the sponsoring companies of the lottery can conduct market research and advertise at the same time so that campaigns may be followed up and researched in the same medium as the medium used for the advertising of the commercial images.
  • the sponsoring company only pays for market research questions that have been answered and for commercial images that have actually been seen by the user.
  • the sponsoring company may be provided with complete statistics regarding which customer groups have seen which images and how many times they have seen the commercial images at what time and what those users have answered to the market research questions.
  • the sponsoring company may also limit the amount of exposure it desires such as by limiting the number of lottery tickets a user can scratch on a daily basis.
  • the sponsoring company may also decide the frequency of winning lottery tickets that should be available.
  • the sponsoring company pays for the numbers of times the user is exposed to the commercial images and commercial messages. A certain portion of this payment may be used for creating the pot of prizes.
  • the sponsoring company may pay the administrator of the website 102 each time a user has been exposed to a commercial image at least 10 times or any other suitable number. For example, after the user has seen the commercial image for at least 10 times the sponsoring company may consider that the recognition of commercial image has reached the user and a contact between the user and the commercial image has been established.
  • Another feature is that the sponsoring companies pay the administrator after the advertising campaign is completed so that the sponsoring company only pays for actual contacts with the users. In this way, the sponsoring company may also limit the expenditure by setting a maximum limit to the number of contacts it is willing to pay for.
  • the service provider may also provide the supporting company with statistical information and market research data to follow up on marketing campaigns in the same medium and statistics on which groups have seen which commercial messages and when they were seen.
  • the groups may be defined by for example, age, sex, geographical location and user profile.
