  • the invention is based on the understanding that an "invisible" tactile user interface can be realized by using a microphone element to detect vibrations caused by a user knocking on the surface from the outside and by controlling the appliance in accordance with the detected vibrations.
  • This user interface is especially useful for, but not limited to, built-in household appliances, where the appliance usually is covered by an exterior panel and where traditional controls and displays on the front side of the appliance is not a feasible option.
  • a user can simply knock on the front cover or any exterior panel to execute commands, such as opening the appliance's door.
  • Such functionality is especially advantageous for disabled people or when the user's hands are busy.
  • the control means is adapted to initiate a certain household appliance operation depending on the nature of the vibration (s) , such as the number of vibrations detected during a predetermined time period and/or the strength of the vibration (s) .

  • the processing means may be adapted to indicate a vibration or vibrations if the processed electric signal exceeds a predetermined threshold.
  • the microphone element used in the household appliance according to the invention is preferably a passive element, such as an electret microphone. An electret microphone is cheap and may have long-term stability and flat response which is advantageous for a measuring microphone.
  • the microphone element may be a piezoelectric (ceramic) element or an electrodynamic microphone.
  • the microphone element is preferably mounted to one of the at least one surface, to best pick up vibrations occurring in that surface.
  • it can be mounted inside of the household appliance such that the vibration (s) occurring in one or more of the at least one surface can be sensed.
  • such a surface could be a front panel, a side panel, or a top panel of the household appliance.
  • These surfaces are usually made of solid materials such as plastics, steel, or wood, and they have excellent sound conduction making the detection of knocks by means of the microphone element feasible.
  • the surface (s) could be covered by an external panel (used mainly for aesthetic purposes) without significantly affecting the knock detection capability.
  • the household appliance discussed above can for example be an oven, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, a freezer, a dishwasher, a laundering machine, or a tumbler dryer .
  • a method for controlling a household appliance comprises receiving an electric signal from a microphone element associated with at least one surface of the household appliance, which electric signal is generated by the microphone element in accordance with at least one vibration occurring in the surface (s), and generating a control signal in accordance with the electric signal for execution of a household appliance operation.

  • the household appliance comprises a front panel 12, a side panel 14, and a top panel 16.
  • the front panel may optionally be covered by an exterior panel 18, which exterior panel 18 usually is designed to have a similar look as surrounding furniture (not shown) .
  • a microphone element 20 is mounted to the inside of the front panel 12.
  • the microphone element 20 is preferably an electret microphone.
  • the microphone element 20 can be attached to the inside of the front panel 12 by means of a simple housing (not shown), for example. Further, several microphone elements can be used, to increase the accuracy.
  • the microphone element 20 is connected to processing means 22, which in turn is connected to control means 24.
  • the processing means 22 and the control means 24 may be formed by a single unit, such as a microcontroller unit.
  • a microcontroller unit is an existing microcontroller unit of the household appliance 10.
  • the microphone element 20, processing means 22, and control means 24 form part of an "invisible" tactile user interface of the household appliance 10.
  • the user interface as well as the processing and control means 22, 24 will be explained in more detail below.
  • the knock causes a repercussion and a vibration pulse of the panel 12 which is detected by the microphone element 20.
  • the panel 12 should be made of a material with good sound conduction, such as plastics, steel, or wood.
  • a vibration induced in the exterior panel 18 when a user is knocking on the same is transferred to the underlying front panel 12, where it is picked up by the microphone element 20.
  • the microphone element 20 could be mounted directly to the exterior panel 18, which may narrow the microphone's selectivity.
  • the microphone element 20 then generates an electric signal in accordance with the vibration (s) occurring in the panel 12, which electric signal is passed on to the processing means 22 to distinguish vibrations related to user' s knocks on the panel 12 from minor acoustic noise and disturbances caused by the appliance itself or other external events .
  • the signal from the processing means 22 is than passed on to the control means 24, which generates a control signal in accordance with the processed electric signal for execution of the requested household appliance operation. For example, if the signal indicates one knock on the front panel, the control means 24 may initiate a vocal announcement of the appliance's status by means of a loudspeaker 26 (the loudspeaker could be an existing loudspeaker) . Two consecutive knocks could cause the appliance to halt its operation. Three consecutive knocks could cause the appliance to open its main door (not shown) , and so on.
  • the processing means 22 comprises a peak detector 28, a low pass filter 30, a differential circuit 32, an analog-to-digital converter 34, and a processing unit 36 connected in series as illustrated in fig. 2.
  • the peak detector 28 extracts an envelope from the amplitude modulated signal from the microphone element 20.
  • An exemplary signal from the microphone element 20 caused by three consecutive knocks is illustrated in fig. 3a.
  • the low pass filter 30 then cuts all interference, resulting in the signal illustrated in fig. 3b. Then, the differential circuit 32 sharpens the signal, resulting in the signal illustrated in fig. 3c. Finally, the signal in fig. 3c is applied to the analog-to-digital converter 34 and passed to the processing unit 36.
  • the processing unit 36 samples the signal from the analog-to-digital converter 34, as illustrated in fig. 3d. Each sampling is indicated by X. The time between each sampling is preferably about 1 ms .
  • the processing unit 36 then uses a predetermined threshold 28 which is selected so that any noise is rejected.
  • a knock is determined.
  • the threshold 28, the length of the protective pauses, and/or the required number of consecutive samples exceeding the threshold can be varied according to a given application.
  • the signal in fig. 3d "contains” three knocks during the predetermined time period T.
  • This information is then passed on to the control means 24, which takes action accordingly, such as stopping the washing program (in case the appliance 10 is a washing machine) or stopping the cooking cycle (in case the appliance 10 is an oven or the like) .

  • the length of the vibration i.e. strength of the knock
  • certain household appliance operations can be associated with knocks of different durability.
  • processing means for instance the analog-to-digital converter 34 and the processing unit 36
  • the control means 24 can be integrated with the control means 24 in a single unit, such as an existing microcontroller unit of the household appliance 10.
  • the microphone element 20 could alternatively be mounted on the side panel 14 or the top panel 16, whereby a user should knock on the side panel 14 or top panel 16, respectively, to communicate with the appliance.
  • the microphone element 20 can be mounted inside the household appliance 10, for example on an existing printed circuit board inside the appliance, so as to detect vibrations in several surfaces of the appliance.
  • the whole casing (e.g. the front, top, and side panels) of the appliance can be used as reception area for the knocks. Further, when mounting the microphone element 20 inside of the appliance, no modification of the outer panels of the appliance is necessary.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un appareil ménager (10) comprenant un élément de micro (20) associé à au moins une surface (12, 14, 16) de l'appareil ménager, de façon à transférer au moins une vibration apparaissant dans la (les) surface(s) jusqu'à l'élément de micro qui est conçu pour générer un signal électrique en fonction de la (des) vibration(s), ainsi que des moyens de commande (24) servant à générer un signal de commande en fonction du signal électrique afin d'exécuter une opération de l'appareil ménager. Cette vibration peut être générée par des coups frappés sur la surface par l'utilisateur, ce qui permet de réaliser une interface utilisateur tactile 'invisible'. L'invention concerne également un procédé servant à commander un appareil ménager.
