In der Regel weisen heutige Außenspiegeleinrichtungen ein, über einen Trägerarm an der Fahrzeugtüre angeordnetes Spiegelgehäuse mit einem in diesem Spiegelgehäuse horizontal und vertikal verschwenkbaren Spiegelelement auf. Dabei ist auch das Spiegelgehäuse in der Regel um zumindest eine Drehachse schwenkbar an der Fahrzeugtüre befestigt. Insbesondere die automatische oder manuelle Spiegeleinklappung zum Schutz der Außenspiegeleinrichtung (vor einer Beschädigung durch eng vorbeifahrende Fahrzeuge) beim Abstellen des Fahrzeugs erfolgt durch das manuelle oder automatische Verschwenken der Außenspiegeleinrichtung um die Drehachse des Spiegelgehäuses in Richtung Fahrzeugkarosserie. Bevorzugt ist die Außenspiegeleinrichtung als elektrisch verstellbare Einrichtung ausgebildet, bei der die im Spiegelgehäuse angeordnete Spiegelfläche und/oder das Spiegelgehäuse selbst in Abhängigkeit vom Öffnungswinkel der öffnenden Fahrzeugtüre verstellt werden. Die als elektrisch verstellbare Einrichtung ausgebildete Außenspiegeleinrichtung wirkt mit einer elektronischen Steuereinheit zusammen, wobei durch Mittel zur Erfassung des Öffnungswinkels der die Außenspiegeleinheit tragenden Fahrzeugtür der Öffnungsgrad der Fahrzeugtüre, und damit der Winkel um den sich das Spiegelelement aus seiner Ruheposition bei geschlossener Fahrzeugtüre verdreht hat, ermittelt und der Steuereinheit zugeführt wird. Die Steuereinheit ist dabei derart ausgebildet, dass sie einen das Spiegelelement und/oder ein das Spiegelelement tragendes Teil (z.B. auch das Gehäuseteil selbst) verstellenden Aktuator derart ansteuert, dass das Spiegelelement bzw. das tragende Teil in Abhängigkeit vom Öffnungswinkel der Fahrzeugtür automatisch verstellt wird, derart, dass der über den Außenspiegel zu beobachtende Umgebungsbereich (ausgehend von einer vorbestimmten Referenz-Blickposition) im Wesentlichen erhalten bleibt. Eine einfache Umsetzung der Erfindung könnte im Rahmen einer elektrisch betätigten Außenspiegel-Anklappfunktion (zum Schutz vor Beschädigung, wie vorstehend beschrieben) oder im Rahmen einer herkömmlichen elektrischen Spiegelverstellung erfolgen, wobei einem Steuergerät der aktuelle Türöffnungswinkel durch entsprechende Erfassungsmittel mitgeteilt wird und vom Steuergerät ein entsprechendes Steuersignal zur Ansteuerung eines den Außenspiegel verstellenden Aktuators erzeugt wird.
