Abstract

A rapid switching, low response time cholesteric active matrix liquid crystal device suitable for field sequential colour (FSC) illumination (also called colour sequential illumination) is disclosed. RGB LED light sources (9) in the backlight are switched in conjunction with the liquid crystal layer (4) to provide a colour display without colour filters. Alternatively a white! source can be used with colour filters. The liquid crystal layer is arranged between crossed! polarisers (5, 7). The arrangement blocks light in the homeotropic state (21). A display transmission state results on switching the layer from the homeotropic into at least one of a transient planar state (25), an unaligned planar state (27) and an aligned planar state (29). Driving schemes for achieving different grey scale and colour values are disclosed.
