Abstract
A protective cover for the display surface of an interactive whiteboard is made of a rigid, non-porous plastic sheet (1) which is impervious to light and which is provided with means (2) for attaching the plastic sheet to the interactive whiteboard over the display surface. The protective cover is made of a plastic material (e.g. polypropylene) which allows the protective cover to be used as an ordinary non-electronically sensitive whiteboard.
Description
PROTECTIVE COVER FOR INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS
This invention relates to a protective cover for interactive whiteboards.
The interactive whiteboard was invented in 1991 (see US Patent No 5448263). The interactive whiteboard has a touch sensitive electronic display surface which operates as part of an interactive system which includes a computer and a data projector. The computer sends an image of a computer application to the projector. The projector casts the image on to the interactive whiteboard which acts as both the monitor and input device, allowing you to control any computer application by touching the display surface (screen). All interactive whiteboards come with software which enable you to use it as a copy board. You can write or draw on the interactive whiteboard with the pens provided and save the image in the computer. These images can be then be printed or e-mailed.
Since being introduced, the interactive whiteboard has been an outstanding commercial success. It provides excellent learning opportunities for educational institutions and business activities. However, the interactive whiteboard has certain disadvantages. Its construction includes two sheets of resistive material stretched over a large flat surface and separated by a small air gap. When you press on the whiteboard's displace surface the two resistive sheets touch and an x,y coordinate is registered. The surface resistive sheet is made of a polyester resin and the backing resistive sheet is made of copper.
The polyester touch sensitive sheet is a relatively soft paper thin membrane and this is the reason for some of the disadvantages. A first disadvantage is that the paper thin membrane is easily damaged. Permanent damage can be caused by pens or other sharp objects piercing holes in the membrane. When holes are made in the membrane an electronically inactive patch is created in a large area underneath the hole. Further accidental or deliberate damage can be caused when the interactive whiteboard is left unattended in an empty room. Yet another disadvantage is that the display surface is difficult to clean. The pen markings are very difficult to rub off completely. As a result, the display surface becomes very unclean after extensive use.
An object of the present invention is to provide a protective cover for the display surface of an interactive whiteboard which overcomes the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to the present invention a protective cover for the electronically active display surface of an interactive whiteboard comprises a flat sheet of plastic material dimensioned to cover the display surface in combination with means for attaching the flat sheet to the interactive whiteboard over the display surface.
Preferably, the attachment means is integrally formed on the plastic sheet.
Further preferably, the attachment means is an extension of the top end of the plastic sheet which is folded at 90° towards the display surface and is again folded at 90° to form an inverted channel shaped lip which hooks over the top of the interactive whiteboard.
Alternatively, the attachment means is an extension of each side of the plastic sheet which extensions are folded over at 90° so that the plastic sheet can fit firmly over each edge of the interactive whiteboard.
The flat plastic sheet advantageously is rigid, non-porous and impervious to light.
Furthermore, the plastic sheet is made of a material which enables the sheet to be used as an ordinary non-electronic whiteboard.
Advantageously, the plastic sheet is made of polypropylene.
The protection cover of the invention may be provided at its lower end with an outwardly extending tray which can be used for holding pens and other tools.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the embodiment; Figure 2 is a side view of the embodiment; and Figure 3 is a rear view of the embodiment.
Referring to the drawings, a protective cover for an interactive whiteboard consists of a flat, rigid, non-porous polypropylene sheet (1) which is impervious to light. An extension (2) at the top end of the polypropylene sheet(l) is folded over at 90° towards the display surface of the interactive whiteboard and is again folded over at 90° to form an inverted channel shaped lip (3) which serves as the sheet attachment means which can be hooked onto the top of the whiteboard. Other forms of attachment means (not shown) are possible. For example, the plastic sheet (1) can have an extension on each edge which is folded over at 90° towards the displace surface of the whiteboard. The sheet (1) can then fit firmly over each edge of the interactive whiteboard. The polypropylene sheet (1) can also be provided at its bottom end with an outwardly extending tray (not shown) which can be used for holding pens and other tools.
Although the above embodiment has been described with reference to a polypropylene protective cover sheet, it will be evident to a person skilled in this art that the cover sheet can be made of other plastics materials to give sheets that can be used as ordinary nonelectronic whiteboards.
The protective cover of the invention is specially designed for interactive whiteboards. The protective cover extends the features of the interactive whiteboard, namely:
(a) The protective cover can receive projections like a traditional, ordinary, nonelectronic whiteboard;
(b) The protective cover can be written on using normal dry-erase pens without the fear of damaging the display surface of the costly interactive whiteboard;
(c) The protective cover combines the benefits of both the interactive whiteboard and the traditional, ordinary, non-electronic whiteboard and you no longer need more than one whiteboard in the classroom or conference room;
(d) The protective cover is very strong and sturdy and protects the sensitive interactive whiteboard from any damage and cleaning problems; and
(e) The protective cover saves space in the classroom or conference room and extends the life of the valuable interactive whiteboard.
Claims
